Linda Barnicott
Artist, Linda Barnicott Publishing L.L.C.
Linda Barnicott began her career as a portrait artist in 1975. Today she is beloved and sought-after for her enchanting portraits of Pittsburgh. Using rich pastel colors, she captures the unique beauty of famous Pittsburgh places with a charm all her own. It began in 1989 with the now-famous tribute to downtown holiday shopping entitled “Meet Me Under Kaufmann’s Clock.” The work immediately won the hearts of Pittsburghers, who have been meeting friends under the clock downtown for years. From this work Linda created several series of Pittsburgh scenes, capturing warm memories that are loved by generations. In 1995, she began painting a series of Kennywood Park scenes that has become even more popular. Since then, she has brought to life the magic of every amusement park in the region, including Story Book Forest, Idlewild Park, Sand Castle Water Park and West View Park, which closed in 1977. In 2011 she added to her body of work plein air pastel landscapes from her traveling across the country. Her goal is to bring to the beholder a sense of peace and tranquility.

With roots as a portrait artist, Barnicott includes family members and friends in every painting. “If you look carefully, you can watch my daughters grow up over the years, starting with the Kennywood Series,” says Barnicott. “And my husband appears in just about all of them.” Barnicott begins each piece with photographs of the scene. She takes family and friends with her, setting up their posed positions. It was a hot day in the middle of July when they stood in full winter gear beneath Kaufmann’s clock for her reference shots. She makes sketches to use as reference, too. To paint a couple in one of the old aluminum boats on Kennywood Lagoon, she sketched some friends posed on a bench in her yard. The man held a rake and a hoe instead of oars. After a little Barnicott magic, the two now float peacefully on the water in “Coasting Through Kennywood.”

Barnicott was chosen to be the official artist of the 1996 Three Rivers Regatta. And since 1998, she has been commissioned by the American Cancer Society of Greater Pittsburgh to create the painting used on their annual Christmas card. In 2000, Barnicott received a special Proclamation from the City of Pittsburgh, commemorating her “tremendous contribution in capturing and preserving many sites in and around the Pittsburgh Area.” This is an honor she holds dear, as a largely self-taught artist. Barnicott did study, on several occasions, under the tutelage of international portrait artist Daniel Greene of upper state New York and nationally with landscape artist, Richard McKinley. In 2006, Linda's company, Linda Barnicott Publishing, LLC, was chosen as a winner of the prestigious 2006 Forbes® Enterprise Award. Linda has been honored to work with George Nowack at the Oncology Wellness Institute in Meadville, PA. She volunteered her time and talents to help reduce the stress of cancer patients, who are receiving chemotherapy, through creating artwork. Her paintings hung in the gallery there for the patients to enjoy for 3 years. Linda was chosen to be the official artist for the 50th Anniversary of Pittsburgh’s Light-up Night. In 2010, she partnered with Wendell August Forge to create her art in handmade metals. Two of her recent notable commissions were anniversary paintings for Macy’s and La Roche College in 2013.

Each year, Barnicott’s endearing scenes become more popular. Her paintings and collectibles are sold worldwide on the Internet, art shows, and appear in well over 50 regional galleries and gift shops. Barnicott works in a studio at her Monroeville home, where she lives with her husband. She has two grown beautiful daughters. You can visit an online gallery of all of her paintings at www.lindabarnicott.com.

Talking Points:
  • Linda started her career as a Pittsburgh artist in 1989 with a painting entitled ,"Meet Me Under Kaufmann's Clock and in 2013, after painting Kaufmann's several times over my career, I was asked to paint the 100th anniversary painting of Kaufmann's clock.
  • For the last 16 years she has created the holiday card for the American Cancer Society earning them over 3/4 of million dollars for cancer research and prevention. This year I will be painting the County Courthouse as it celebrates its 125th year.
  • This is year 5th year of her partnership with Wendell August Forge in created my artwork in handmade metals. There will be 3 new Pittsburgh and 3 new Kennywood ornaments to add to the collection.
  • In May Linda embarked on a painting trip to California where she painted outdoor scense in and around Yosemite National Park. She plans to continue painting landscapes from her travels. This is her new love to create tranquil, "take me away" pastel paintings.
