Dan Droz
President, Droz Marketing
Dan Droz is president of Droz Marketing, and taught marketing and planning at Carnegie Mellon University where he founded the nation’s first university program in Multidisciplinary Product Development. He is the recipient of 15 Marketer of the Year awards granted by the American Marketing Association, more than any marketer in America, including Grand Marketer of the Year in 2012. In 1996, Dan was recognized as one of 7 outstanding alumni of Harvard University at the 25th Anniversary of the Carpenter Center for Visual Arts for his contribution to design education. Dan is also an active entrepreneur, having founded or co-founded over 10 new businesses in technology, manufacturing and retail during his 35-year career. His latest book, "Click Here," available from Amazon and as a free download to listeners of Positively Pittsburgh, details the ways that businesses can attract, convert and monetize online customers.

Droz Marketing is one of our region's leading marketing firms, helping businesses differentiate themselves from their competitors and attract and convert customers with strategic branding, marketing communications design, website development and social media.

Talking Points:
  • We help companies differentiate themselves and better communicate their value to prospects, customers and referral sources. One of the uniqueness of our process is our focus on conversion, ie, getting prospects and customers to take some specific and measurable action so you can actually see and measure the success of our programs.
  • At the Duquesne Technology Conference I will do a presentation on how to attract and convert online customers called The Title of the Session is: Compel & Sell: Content & Calls to Action That Get Results. It's about how the "ACT" formula, Attracting, Converting and Transforming visitors into customers through your social media, SEO, advertising and email marketing. To do that, we'll cover the 5 basic "C's" of getting business online: Content, Community, Commerce, Context and CTA which stands for "Call to Action."
  • Although all of the C's...(Content, Community, Commerce, Context and CTA) are important, probably the most important ones for almost every business are the first and last "C" in this list: Content and Call to Action.
  • Content is the fuel of online traffic. It's what attracts people to your site. It's what engages them. It's what's on your pages, in your blogs, on your social media posts. It's everything you say that is valuable and meaningful. We'll cover what makes content magnetic and particularly, how to structure your online content so it can get distributed to as many points on the internet as possible.
  • The Last "C," is probably the most important of all: The CALL To ACTION, ie, what is it that you want someone to do...and how you frame it so you can get them take that action. An offer is a good way to get people to take an action. for Example: when I say, I'll give everyone a free book on how to attract and convert customers if you go to my website, drozmarketing.com.... I'm suggesting a specific action for them to take and an 'offer' or "prompt" to activate that action.
      Entrepreneur Tip:
The most important thing in online marketing is outbound marketing, ie, when you have opt-in permission to send information to a prospects or customers email address. this is where content comes in. if it's not good content, no one will want it or read. But if the content is good, you create great awareness and converstion. Of course, you've got to the email address, which is the most important conversion in online marketing.

There are literally hundreds of great suggestions, strategies and tactics in our book, "Click Here" that
your listeners can download on our website, www.drozmarketing.com. Also, we'll be giving some great examples of how to apply these principles in our seminar at The Duquesne Technology Conference on Nov. 13. Our seminar is at 11:25 with lunch right after the seminar, so it's a great deal and a great day.  And, after you've read the book, "Click Here," I'm interested in your feedback and any tips. You can reach me at ddroz@droz.com or through our drozmarketing.com website.

Clemente, Cirque Holidaze, The Capitol Steps
Listen to the show online HERE

      PPL Co-Host
      JoAnn R.  Forrester, Author
Once upon a time there was business consultant by the name of JoAnn R. Forrester. She was a founder and or partner in “lots” of businesses.  She worked very hard for her clients, some large some small.  She raised lots of money to help her clients start and build their businesses.   She raised OVER $40 million dollars.  She taught hundreds of classes, seminars and workshops to thousands of clients and students. She helped write business workbooks on planning, sales and cost analysis.

JoAnn won many awards for her accomplishments.  She helped  many of her clients gain national recognition for their achievements.  She even had her own podcast show, The Empress of Biz, Listen, Learn, and Prosper.

JoAnn was well known for her community activities, and had helped many organizations that served women and children.  But something was missing! JoAnn started to become sad and bored.   She was tired of doing cost analysis, business plans and having to joust with bankers to help her clients….she wanted to do something that was fun, creative and made her happy.  

After much sighing and stressful days, she woke up and felt inspired to set down at her desk and figure out what else she could do to besides “serious business stuff”.  Well she sat and wrote, and sat and wrote some more….and “Oh My” she discovered that she loved to write and had lots of stories in her head.  Many of them children’s stories that had been waiting to be told for a long time.  And the more she wrote the stories ….the happier she was.   So now JoAnn writes is much happier.  She still helps her business clients but she knows she can always pick up the pen and escape into her special happy place.

JoAnn’s first children’s book, “The Gift of Holiday Valley” is one that she has carried in her heart for a long time and now is being shared with you.  Come and read about Holiday Valley.  A special place where we would all like to be.  Where no matter who you are, what you look like, or where you came from, you belong and everyone wants to be your friend and help you.  Although…even in a perfect place like Holiday Valley… there are some new things to learn and different ways to be helpful and share the joy and happiness of everyone there.

Tallis Scholars Return to Heinz Hall to Perform with Pittsburgh Symphony Brass
      Dec. 10, 2014  |  7:30 PM  |  Heinz Hall
Take a trip back in time this holiday season with the Pittsburgh Symphony Brass and leading Renaissance vocal ensemble the Tallis Scholars on Wednesday, December 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Heinz Hall.  The Tallis Scholars recently completed a very successful world tour with 99 events in 80 different venues throughout 16 countries. In December, they return to Heinz Hall to fill it with a variety of inspiring music for the Christmas season, including another outstanding performance of Allegri’s Miserere. This concert also brings a special present to audiences — for the first time ever, the Tallis Scholars will close the concert in a shared performance of a newly commissioned work with the Pittsburgh Symphony Brass, who also will perform selections from their Christmas albums with the virtuosic flare for which they are known.

The Tallis Scholars were founded in 1973 by their director, Peter Phillips. Through their recordings and concert performances, they have established themselves as the leading exponents of Renaissance sacred music throughout the world. Phillips has worked with the ensemble to create, through good tuning and blend, the purity and clarity of sound which he feels best serve the Renaissance repertoire, allowing every detail of the musical lines to be heard. The Tallis Scholars perform in both sacred and secular venues, usually giving around 70 concerts each year across the globe. In 2013, the group celebrated their 40th anniversary with a World Tour performing 99 events in 80 venues in 16 countries and travelling sufficient air-miles to circumnavigate the globe four times. They kicked off the year with a spectacular concert in St Paul’s Cathedral, London, including a performance of Thomas Tallis’ 40-part motet Spem in alium and the world premieres of works written specially for them by Gabriel Jackson and Eric Whitacre. Their new recording of the Missa Gloria tibi Trinitas by the 16th Century Tudor composer, John Taverner, was released on the exact anniversary of their first concert in 1973 and enjoyed six weeks at number one in the UK Specialist Classical Album Chart.

      Calliope Presents The Duhks
      Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014  |  7:30 PM  |  Carnegie Lecture Hall (Oakland)
No band epitomizes the polyethnic strands of modern folk music better than The Duhks. Since forming in Winnipeg in 2001 The Duhks have created a dynamic blend of old-timey, French Canadian and Celtic music punched up with shades of blues, soul and driving Afro Cuban rhythms that leaves festival crowds on their feet. Over the course of 4 critically-acclaimed albums the band has earned Juno and Grammy awards and nominations and have played a significant role in the neo-folk revival.

On Beyond the Blue The Duhks are in the best form of their 13 year career. Rejuvenated by a two year hiatus and energized by the return of vocalist Jessee Havey and the addition of new members, fiddler Rosie Newton, drummer/percussionist Kevin Garcia, and guitarist/bouzouki player Colin Savoie-Levac, The Duhks founder Leonard Podolak found an amazing pallet of inspiration for the new project. “All of the people who have been in the band over the years, including non-touring founding members Tania Elizabeth and Jordan McConnell (who both appear on the album) have had a hand in shaping our sound and direction. The goal with the new record was to draw on everything we’ve learned over the years and everything we know about where we want to take the music now and create something as fresh, exciting and forward thinking as possible.” Toward that end, the band turned to the rising production team of Mike + Ruthy (Mike Merenda and Ruth Unger of The Mammals), who brought a progressive approach to production that was still firmly rooted in the traditions of folk music.  Tickets are  $39 / $23 student rush w/ ID, (prices include handling fee).

For information, contact Calliope at (412) 361-1915, or by visiting www.calliopehouse.org.

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Announces The Capitol Steps Washington, D.C. Comedy Troupe to Appear in Pittsburgh
      Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014  |  4 PM  |  Byham Theater
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces The Capitol Steps, a Washington, D.C. based comedy troupe that began as a group of Senate Staffers, will present a show based on songs from their current album “How to Succeed In Congress Without Really Lying” on Sunday, November 2, 2014, at 4:00 p.m., at the Byham Theater.  Tickets cost $20 - $45.

For over thirty years, The Capitol Steps have been a Washington, D.C. institution providing a unique blend of musical and political comedy to our nation’s capital.  Each show consists of tasteful lampooning guaranteed to leave both sides of the political spectrum laughing. The troupe started in 1981, when John McCain was only 63 years old!  Since then, they have appeared on “The Today Show,” “Nightline,” “CBS Evening News” and for many years in specials for National Public Radio. “We put the MOCK in Democracy!”  ̶  The Capitol Steps

Their show is constantly changing, strenuously bi-partisan, and includes songs about everything in the news, such as “Putin on a Blitz,” “The Big Benghazi Theory,” and “Everybody Must Get Droned.”  If you’ve ever wanted to see Barack Obama sing a show tune, Nancy Pelosi sing a rock song, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie do a classical ballet, this might just be the show for you!

      Spotlight on Choristers
What started out as a small choral group providing support for the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s inaugural performance of Gustav Mahler’s “Symphony No. 3” has become a nationally recognized children’s choral ensemble. The Children’s Festival Chorus is moving into a new era after the recent celebration of its 30th anniversary. The organization is seeking a new artistic director with the retirement of its creative leader, Christine Jordanoff. And what better time to start fresh with a new name and logo? We will keep our eyes open to see what changes come to fruition for the Children’s Festival Chorus, while continuing to enjoy the long-standing tradition of choral excellence that this group embodies.

We were so proud to sing the National Anthem last month at the Pittsburgh Penguins Game. The crowd was enormous but thanks to Shawn Funk the kids weren't nervous at all; excited, but poised.
Please enjoy these impromptu photos from that memorable day. There are also interviews with a few of our Bel Canto Choristers as well as some candid moments we happen to capture.

9th Annual THINK BIG FORUM: Women Who Make and Create
      Tuesday, Oct. 14th, 2014  |  4:30 PM - 8:00 PM  |  Chatham University Shadyside Campus
      Think Big Speakers:
Georgena Terry, CEO, Heart of Steel Bicycles
Georgena’s business evolved from a desire to work for herself without the constraints of a traditional corporate lifestyle. She likes to call herself a "seat of the pants" entrepreneur – one who follows her intuition and plays to her strengths while ignoring her weaknesses. Relying on anecdotal and scientific evidence, she created bicycles designed for women. Prior to this, the industry treated all bike riders as "unisex" (which we know means "male"). There were lots of ups and downs as her business evolved, but her passion for designing bicycles has never waned. It continues today in Heart of Steel Bicycles, a nod to her love affair with steel, which originated, no doubt, in Pittsburgh.

Heather Knight, Founder & Chief Roboticist, Marilyn Monrobot
Assisted by her pint-sized robot comedian, Heather will describe social robotics, how we make snap decisions about the capabilities and intent of machine, and how robot designers can influence these impressions via motion. From call centers to mobile robots, we have emotional reactions to technology and apply social conventions to machines. In designing robots, Heather wants to influence these attributions, because that enables or limits the effectiveness and acceptance of these machines in human environments.

Lani Lazzari, President & CEO, Simple Sugars
Simple Sugars’ story is about identifying a personal need that grew out of frustration with the options available to her, having the initiative to want to find something better and then the determination to make it happen! It’s not rocket science, it’s about finding an unmet need and then creating an awesome and unique product to fill it (emphasis on unique). But it takes incredibly hard work and lots and lots of sacrifice and determination to make it successful.

He partnered with street-savvy formerly homeless individuals and, initially dressing as a homeless person, began to make nighttime street rounds in the alleys and under the bridges of the city. From this initial outreach service other clinical volunteers joined in and Operation Safety Net was born.

This performance of the Tennessee Williams play The Glass Menagerie will surely clutch the strings of the collective hearts of Pittsburghers- expressly those who have supported the success of the PPT since its inception 40 years ago.  Yes, that’s right; this is the 40th anniversary of the PPT.   What better way to commemorate the achievements of the theater than by producing, Menagerie, mirroring the theater’s first season.  The evening began when  Producing Artistic Director, Ted Pappas, bestowed upon the eager audience an honorable introduction, which included a gracious recognition of PNC and their long withstanding commitment, not only to the achievements of PPT  but to the arts as a whole in our region. Then the lights dim-

The show begins with an overview of the period by Tom Wingfield, played by Fisher Neal. Neal, a seasoned actor is making his Pittsburgh debut in Menagerie.  Williams writing is a vessel for Neal’s eloquence. His voice grants the audience a glimpse into the lives of his family in 1937.  As narrator, Neal reminds us, with the reflective and introverted tone, utilizing the intellect of a poet, that this story is not real; it is a memory and intended to be interpreted as such.  The show proceeds with the remaining characters, Cathyrn Wake, as Laura Wingfield, Lynne Wintersteller staring as Amanda Wingfield and Jordan Whalen cast as Jim O’Connor. Each actor shares with the audience a moment in time, a snap chat of memory and most unfortunate, the immense cruelty and weight of disenchantment that can accompany said remembrances.

      David Whalen as Macbeth
Macbeth, one of Shakespeare’s shortest and darkest plays was first staged over five hundred years. It’s insights into the human character and the thirst and consequence of greed and power still ring true.  The play Macbeth depicts the tale of a brave Scottish General, Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth, who become consumed by a prophecy of glory and power based on the prediction of witches heard shortly shortly after a major victory and promotion.  This prophesy grabs him, twists him and turns into a murderous and paranoid man who retains his power by eliminating all those he perceives as a threat.

A Triple Play with the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet

Pittsburgh Dance Council of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust started their 2014-15 season on October 11th featuring three commissioned works performed by the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. Aspen has a population near 7,000 -- it makes sense that they would combine efforts with Santa Fe to field a dance troupe. Both were mining towns in the Rockies and as distances go out West, not really very far from each other.

The first two sets were sparse. Black/white lighting, with the use of spotlights and shadowing, made things appear and disappear right before our eyes. This stage effect leads us into the depths of the dancers' creativity. The third set, awash with color, used bold lighting changes behind fabric to create the atmosphere. It is amazing what can be accomplished with good lights and a scrim, or two, or three. As the old Vaudeville adage goes, “It packs flat and plays big.” It does. .and did.
