FIRST NIGHT® PITTSBURGH 2009:
Celebrating the First Night® of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s 25th Anniversary!
Wednesday, December 31, 2008, 6 pm – Midnight
In the heart of the Cultural District

PITTSBURGH … Celebrate New Year’s Eve in the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District with The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s First Night® Pittsburgh 2009. This family-friendly community event is presented by Education and Community Engagement department of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, with generous support from lead sponsor, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. The city will revel in a joyous celebration of the arts: dance, music, theater, comedy, magic, visual art and film, plus hands-on activities for children and adults.

In addition to celebrating the conclusion of Pittsburgh 250, First Night® also marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s 25th anniversary. Founded in 1984, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has led the way for the creation and ongoing development of Pittsburgh’s award-winning Cultural District. Utilizing the arts as a means for transforming a formerly blighted downtown, the Cultural Trust today welcomes over a million visitors annually to thousands of performances, gallery exhibitions and community events.

In addition to First Night® Pittsburgh, the Trust presents the PNC Broadway Across America – Pittsburgh series; the Pittsburgh Dance Council; the Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater and Festival; and Three Rivers Arts Festival among other events. Additionally, the Trust owns and operates Theater Square and the Cabaret at Theater Square; the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts; Byham, O’Reilly, and Harris Theaters; Wood Street Galleries; SPACE, a visual arts gallery at 812 Liberty Avenue; 707 and 709 Penn Galleries; and 937 Liberty, a multipurpose performance and exhibit space, among other downtown arts facilities.
First Night® Pittsburgh Festivities begin at 6 pm with the Dollar Bank Children’s Fireworks Display and a performance by the Spirit and Soul All City Gospel Choir on the Dollar Bank Main Stage, followed by the Target First Night® Parade at 8 pm. This year, the evening concludes with a live performance by The Fabulous Thunderbirds and the First Night® tradition, The Countdown to Midnight and Future of Pittsburgh Grand Finale atop Penn Avenue Place. The Highmark Stage, where all the First Night® revelry concludes, is located on Penn Avenue by Fifth Avenue and Fifth Avenue Place.

Among the 125 events and activities held in 50 venues throughout the Cultural District, other special First Night® Pittsburgh attractions include the Duquesne Light Family Tent and performances by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and Pittsburgh Symphony Brass at the Byham Theater, Pure Gold at the Benedum Center, the city’s largest Line Dance Party, among many “weatherproof” activities. For a complete listing of events, please visit www.firstnightpgh.org or call (412) 456-6666.

FIRST NIGHT® BUTTONS
To join the celebration, simply purchase a First Night® Pittsburgh 2009 Button, a passport to all of the performances, activities and art exhibits. A First Night® button costs only $8; children age 5 and under are admitted for free. First Night® buttons are available at participating Giant Eagle stores and The Box Office at Theater Square. NEW: First Night buttons are also available online at firstnightpgh.org!

Due to their overwhelming popularity and limited seating in Cultural District theaters, a free General Admission Seating Voucher is necessary to see the performances of Pure Gold, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and the Pittsburgh Symphony Brass, The Amish Monkeys, Hustlebot, and Magician David Lawrence’s Magic Show. Vouchers are available at The Box Office at Theater Square. Simply show your First Night® button to obtain up to two seating vouchers per performance. The Box Office at Theater Square is located at 655 Penn Avenue between the O’Reilly Theater and Katz Plaza.

There will be general admission waiting lines for performances at the Benedum Center, Byham Theater and CAPA Main Stage; patrons will be served on a space-available and first-come, first-served basis. Box Office hours are Monday-Saturday, 9 am to 9 pm and Sunday, noon to 6 pm.

VOLUNTEERS
First Night needs volunteers for numerous jobs--from button checkers to activity helpers to parade assistants. Families, co-workers, school groups and individuals of all ages are needed to help us ring in 2009 in a fun, alcohol-free, family-friendly way. To volunteer with First Night, please email Kathi Radock, First Night Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@pgharts.org, call 412-390-4660.

PositivelyPittsburghLive, Pittsburgh in the Movies

This show was recorded on December 22, 2007 of last year, but as we approach development in the strip district of a new movie making complex and Douglas Education Center in Monongahela expands its digital film department, I felt this was a great talkcast to revisit in preparation for doing another on Pittsburgh in the Movies. Te Café is the creation of Terry Himes two friends who decided to open a business together.

Terry saw an interesting tea shop while traveling and the two began the long and detailed process of studying demographics and writing a business plan.

We had been looking for the right location and had identified Squirrel Hill as our first choice. One evening while walking in Squirrel Hill, we saw this perfect corner spot.

We designed the interior and acted as our own general contractors for the improvements. I have a son, a daughter-in-law, two daughters and a son-in-law and Sue has two daughters. Every one of them pitched in and helped.

We have over 100 loose teas, herbals and fruit infusions. We sell them by the custom-brewed individual 16-oz. pot and we make all of our teas “to-go” as well. We also sell loose tea leaves and the necessary brewing equipment.

We offer private tea-tastings which feature about 6 teas. The tastings are presented by our own tea-ologist, Terry. You can select from our course offerings which include: Tea 101, It’s Not Easy Being Green, Black Beauties, Japanese Tea and more, or make up your own theme.

We have a monthly poetry reading known as the Te Café Reading Series.

We feature an ever-changing display of the works of local artists.

We make the best and healthiest smoothies in town. The basic smoothie is made with a choice of two fresh fruits. We also have several that feature tea.

We have tea-mulled apple cider.

We also sell Mung Dynasty wraps, salads, Enrico’s biscotti and scones, H&H Bagels, La Prima coffee

Viability of Pittsburgh in Economic Downturn
By Gary A. Storie, CFP®
724.933.4528
gstorie@fcbanking.com

First Commonwealth Financial Advisors

Interview Talking Points

1. What indicators in your position leads you to believe Pittsburgh is postured to impacted less than most other cities in the United States?
a. Personal experience, having lived in a variety of locations during my tenure with the military:
i. Elected to move to Pittsburgh in 1995 while still an active duty Air Force pilot.
ii. Previously lived in cities such as: Denver, San Antonio, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Montgomery Alabama, and Columbus, Mississippi.
b. At my retirement from the Air Force in 1998 when given the choice of where to live, my wife and I chose to stay in Pittsburgh. (I could have moved my family anywhere in the United States—free. Also, I’m originally from Wyoming and lived in Colorado many years growing up). Reasons why we stayed:
i. Great Public School systems in Southwestern PA – they were both well-prepared for college — and both went on to be graduates of Penn State.
ii. Both my wife and I enjoy the suburban setting in Peters Township, but also like the many benefits Pittsburgh offers—
1. Weather and strategic location of Pittsburgh
2. Best Places to Live Awards that Pittsburgh has received – we agree!

2. Those are social and personal reasons why you think Pittsburgh is a great place to live, but what makes Pittsburgh unique from other cities during an economic downturn?
a. Pittsburgh has consistently been a leader in developing and capitalizing on new industries.
b. Despite the loss of 150,000 manufacturing jobs in the 1980’s, Pittsburgh has reestablished itself as a leader in technological innovation.
c. Pittsburgh has evolved into a diverse economy consisting of high technology, finance, healthcare, retail, law, and education sectors.
d. Pittsburgh’s economy is fueled in great part by information technology and biotechnology firms that grew out of the regions strong universities.

3. A common misperception is that people flee Pittsburgh in droves—when in fact Pittsburgh has one of the lowest rates of domestic out-migration of any major metro in the country. Can you expound on this?
a. Pittsburgh has been one of the least successful major regions in attracting international migrants. In fact, only Cincinnati has a smaller percentage of population comprised of international migrants. The other major reason for Pittsburgh's population decline is that deaths have outnumbered births for about 15 years. This is a hangover affect from the 80s, when a huge proportion of 20-somethings left the Pittsburgh region. Steel mills shuttered and the region lost 150,000 jobs. Young adults had to seek work elsewhere in the country. This is the main demographic that would have been having children throughout the 90s until today. Pittsburgh experienced a catastrophic net domestic migration loss of 50,000 for several years in the 80s.
b. Due to the economic downturn, you may find many families returning to this area to be closer to families and find jobs.
c. A more favorable corporate tax policy at the state and local levels would go a long way to attract new businesses to the area and people will follow.
d. I believe an aggressive marketing and advertising campaign would also attract new jobs and people to the area.

4. What has been the impact of the financial crisis on First Commonwealth (and other regional banks/financial organizations)?
a. First Commonwealth (and many regional banks) are well capitalized and have a strong balance sheet with room to grow.
b. First Commonwealth was NEVER in the sub-prime mortgage business that has crippled other banks.
c. First Commonwealth is growing core deposits; we are making loans and adding customer relationships; we are opening several new branch offices this year; we are hiring new employees to staff our many job openings.

5. What about the stock market? As a financial advisor – what are you telling clients right now?
a. Buying opportunity – stocks are on sale
b. Stay calm
c. It’s a great time to work with an advisor (for those who have procrastinated or put the idea on the back burner)

PositivelyPittsburghLive, Pittsburgh Private Schools, Ellis School and Eden Christian Academy

“Pittsburgh Private Schools”
Show Date: August 18, 2008

Click on title to listen to archived show to learn more about these two great Pittsburgh Area Private Schools.

Two private schools in the area joined Positively Pittsburgh Live to share news about their institutions. Eden Christian Academy President Sam Siple and The Ellis School Director of Upper Schools Robin Newham were on the call.

Due to some technical difficulties, we lost Sam early on, but here is some of what he did share:

Eden Christian Academy is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and is the largest Christian school in western Pennsylvania, with 600 students and three campuses (K-12). Sam is the second President of the Academy, and was formally a Vice President at Geneva College in Beaver Falls.

He will return on the next episode to continue his discussion on Eden Christian Academy, so be sure to tune in. The show still went on and it was an informative one at that.

Robin of The Ellis School gave some great information into the ins and outs of her school. Founded in 1916, the school is independent with no religious affiliation. They are a college preparatory school for girls (pre K-12) and they are located in Shadyside.

Robin shared how motivated and active her students are, and how that keeps her there (she’s been there for 27 years!). Her expertise really makes this episode exciting as she talks about financial aid options, how private schools differ from public schools, the creative faculty at Ellis, and the unique courses offered. Below are some fast facts, but listen to the show to get the entire scoop!

FAST FACTS ABOUT ELLIS
• Total Enrollment: 470 students
• Student to faculty ratio: 6:1
• Faculty: 77, of whom 65% hold advanced degrees
Six faculty members hold PhD’s and two have J.D’s
• 22% of students receive need-based financial aid
• Students represent 62 zip codes and 35 school districts
• 25% of the student body are people of color
• Over 50 clubs are available to middle and upper school students
• Approximately 50% of the senior class is recognized as an Advanced
Placement Scholar by the College Board.
• In addition to financial aid, 1.3 million dollars of merit aid for college was
awarded to the class of 2005

Contact the school at 412-661-5992 or visit www.theellisschool.org for more information.

Hometown Heroes, New Feature on Positively Pittsburgh Live

Well sometimes we start a segment on Positively Pittsburgh Live and then we fill it but this time we are starting a segment because we have some great people to fill it. Last week-end was the Miles for Marissa Bike Run and Family Fun complete with block party in the Historic West End. In order to block off streets in the City of Pittsburgh you must have a permit and to get that permit you must have police security which you have to pay for.

I understand the policy and I understand the security reason but the price was a little exorbitant for a fundraiser intended to make money for a young lady, Marissa Web, who is preparing for her 42nd surgery for spina bifida related illness. Enter two customers of Carol's Restaurant and Hometown Sports Deli on Main St. in the West End. They just happened to be customers who were also members of Pittsburgh's Finest. Officer Ed Dolly from Zone 1 in the North Side and Sergeant Kathy Alexander from Zone 6 in the West End requested time off for the event and volunteered their services.

This is a great example of the Pittsburgh Police Force being not only, "At Your Service" but "On Your Side." Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and the Pittsburgh City Council need to know that not only do they have great policeman in the city of Pittsburgh but great humanitarians also.

Both officers provided a safe and congenial environment for the Miles for Marissa Bike Run and Block Party in the Historic West End on Sunday, July 11, 2008.

Next Miles for Marissa and Oktoberfest will be held in October, listen and watch at Positively Pittsburgh Live Alliance for date and details. We will be adding the Hometown Heroes segment to Positively Pittsburgh Live TalkCast on Monday, July 23, 2008. You can listen in at: http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/18520

The Best Pittsburgh Memory and a Love Story Too--From a Guy!

It's not often that you find those big burly guys telling their love stories or recounting their "mushy" memories. But not only did we have one in our Pittsburgh" Greatest Memories Contest but it was a great story about a Pittsburgh icon, The Grove, and the first real love of his life. You can read Gregg Matthis' story, "How I Met Your Mom" in the forum of Positive Pittsburghers at www.pospittlive.ning.com in the FORUM on the front page.

Greg is the owner of SLFF or Smells Like Frecnh Fries which is a company that cleans and reclaims restaurant cooking oil. This seems like a sometimes messy, smelly job but his Pittsburgh's Greatest Memory that he told to win the Positively Pittsburgh Live contest smells like a rose to us.

Greg won eight tickets to Memories of Motown at Jimmy G's Restaurant and Catering in Sharpsburg and reported for the Roving Pittsburgher of PPL that the food was fantastic and the show was even better.

Watch for other upcoming contests on Positively Pittsburgh Live Talkcast, which will also be broadcast on Positive Pittsburghers and the newly launching PositivelyPittsburghLiveMagazine.com.

Congratulations, Greg Matthis, for having the nerve and style to tell your Greatest Pittsburgh Memory.

Episode 67--Stuff Worth Seeing in the Burgh

Pittsburgh 250: BILL FLANAGAN

Bill Flanagan is Executive Vice President—Corporate Relations for the Allegheny Conference on Community Development and its affiliated regional development organizations: The Pennsylvania Economy League of Southwestern Pennsylvania LLC, the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance and the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce. Through 2008 he is serving as Executive Director of Pittsburgh 250, the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the naming of Pittsburgh.

Bill supervises Investor Relations activities for the Conference and Affiliates, including fundraising, membership services and educational programming. He oversees organizational communications. In this role, Bill also hosts “Our Region’s Business” on WPXI-TV, WJAC-TV, WTOV-TV and the Pittsburgh Cable News Channel (PCNC), a program the Conference produces in partnership with Cox Television.

Prior to joining the Conference in September 2001, Bill had covered the economy of southwestern Pennsylvania for more than 13 years as Money Editor of KDKA-TV, where he was Pittsburgh’s only broadcast reporter devoted exclusively to business and personal finance, and where he hosted “The Sunday Business Page.” Bill came to the region in 1982 as a general assignment reporter for the television station. He also has written about personal finance for The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and KDKA-AM.

A graduate of Northwestern University (B.S. Speech), Bill has a Master’s Degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a native of Dover, Delaware.

Bill and his wife, Ann Devlin Flanagan, have two children, Mara and Will.

Pittsburgh 250 is the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the naming of Pittsburgh at the culmination of the Forbes Campaign of 1758.

Pivotal moment of French and Indian War in which England secured the Forks of the Ohio (today’s Pittsburgh) and pretty much assured that people would speak English all the way to the Rocky Mountains.

Celebration of colonial history and everything that has come sense, Pittsburgh as the Gateway to the West, Crucible of the Industrial Revolution, Renaissance City and today, Most Livable for the second time.

The theme of the celebration is “Pittsburgh: Imagine what you can do here,” emphasizing 250-years of world changing history, with everything from the banana split and Big Mac to the polio vaccine and “Boss”, the robot that won DARPA’s Grand Urban Challenge last year.

The celebration is organized into three signature projects, three signature events and three grassroots initiatives. These are built on a “trails to Pittsburgh” concept, based on George Washington’s original trails to Pittsburgh.

Projects:

Transformation of Point State Park – biggest investment in a state park in PA history.

Publication of “Pennsylvania’s Forbes Trail: Gateways and Getaways Along the Legendary Route from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh,” a new driving guide that encourages people to explore Pennsylvania from east to west.

Completion of the Great Allegheny Passage, a continuous biking and hiking trail from WDC to Pittsburgh, the most accessible great trail experience in the world.

Steel Curtain and Local Philantrhopist Dwight White

Steelers' Dwight White dead at 58
By The Tribune-Review
Friday, June 6, 2008

Former Steelers defensive lineman Dwight White, a member of the famous Steel Curtain in the 1970s, died today. He was 58.
White played for the Steelers from 1971-80 and won four Super Bowl rings. He was a two-time Pro Bowl selection.

"Dwight White was one of the greatest players to ever wear a Steelers uniform," Steelers chairman Dan Rooney said. "He was a key member of the Steel Curtain defense and a member of the greatest defensive line in NFL history. He played with a relentlessness that led us to four Super Bowl titles in the 1970s. Dwight refused to be denied, as was evidenced when he walked out of the hospital with pneumonia to play in Super Bowl IX and had an outstanding game, scoring our first points by sacking Fran Tarkenton for a safety.

"Dwight will be remembered by those who knew him even more for being a wonderful and caring person. He was committed to the city of Pittsburgh and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those less fortunate than himself. Our prayers go out to his family. We will miss Dwight, but we will never forget everything he meant to the Steelers organization."
Steelers president Art Rooney II said White's accomplishments on the football field often were overshadowed by other players on those great Steelers teams.

"Dwight should be remembered by fans as a great football player, one who perhaps did not receive the accolades he deserved for helping make the Steelers truly a national team. He always seemed to rise to the occasion when it counted most, and added an element of toughness that was synonymous with our teams of the 1970s.

"We all knew him as 'Mad Dog,' but Dwight was a caring person who was very active in local charities."

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at noon at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Ave., in Shadyside.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in White's memory be sent to the August Wilson Center of African American Culture, 425 Sixth Ave., Suite 1750, Pittsburgh, PA 15219.
