NAWBO’s exciting partnership with Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and her LeanIn.org effort, a global community committed to offering women the encouragement and support to lean in to their ambitions. NAWBO is leaning in because we know how much female entrepreneurs have to offer one another. We support Lean In’s mission to connect and support women by creating a community that fosters their ideas, and encourages them to reach their full potential.

25th anniversary of the Women’s Business Ownership Act that was signed into law in 1988. Also known as the Women’s Business Ownership Act of 1988, HR 5050 included these key components:
• Elimination of state laws requiring women to have a male relative co-sign on a business loan

• Requirement that the U.S. Census Bureau count all woman-owned companies

• Establishment of the Women’s Business Center program, funding local resource centers across the country

• Creation of the National Women’s Business Council, the body of women entrepreneurs and organizations that advises the President and Congress.

In the decades since, HR 5050 has led to a 30 percent surge in the number of women-owned businesses in the U.S. It also created a policy voice for women entrepreneurs that hadn't existed before and fuels the growth of women’s entrepreneurship even as we celebrate the legislation’s 25th anniversary in 2013.

FREE FOR MEMBERS: new e-learning webinar series for 2013 that was made possible through a donation from the Sara Blakely Foundation as well as support from several corporate partners. This new online educational program will address the unique needs and challenges of women-owned businesses through webinar sessions that deliver exceptional tools and knowledge they can immediately apply to grow their business.

The first e-learning session is “Client Attraction” on Thursday, March 28th from 12-1 p.m. EST.

Join multi-million-dollar entrepreneur and business mentor Fabienne Fredrickson, founder of ClientAttraction.com as she shares her proven step-by-step process to upgrade your mindset and discover how easy it is to upgrade your business, your income and your life.

In this high-content, high-value session, you’ll be “stretched” by Fabienne to:
Uncover the hidden reasons why you’re not currently moving to the next level in your business
Discover the exact step-by-step process required to shift your mindset into abundance and transform your income
See a much bigger vision of what’s possible for you
Learn how to get out of your own way and play a MUCH bigger game
Discover the easy formula for creating more income so you can live the lifestyle you dream about

This presentation is a game-changer for women in business ready to experience greater financial success, increase their level of fulfillment in business and live their ideal lifestyle—all without losing their freedom or working harder.

NAWBO members are invited to participate for FREE. Non-members can apply for a scholarship to participate, for which several will be chosen for each e-learning session.

Advocacy
NAWBO provides a platform for women business owners to come together as one voice that translates into a formidable economic force and an effective agent for change in the business environment.

NAWBO was founded in 1975 to open doors for women entrepreneurs by transforming public policy and influencing opinion makers. In the beginning, there were twelve women business owners who met informally in the D.C. area to share information about federal contracts, access to capital and other issues related to their businesses.

NAWBO has continued to represent the issues and concerns of small and women-owned businesses at the national and state levels. Through Congressional testimony, public policy conferences and member education, NAWBO has been at the forefront of advocacy on behalf of women business owners and the issues that impact their companies. Join with NAWBO to represent the interests of the fastest growing segment of the economy.

Access to Capital for Women-Owned Businesses
Increased Federal Procurement for Women Business Owners

Five take aways from the NAWBO Day Seminar, 7 Tips on Writing Awards
*Discover the POWER of Awards…what it can do for you, your business, your credibility, influence and respect
*Pick the RIGHT awards to apply for
*Leverage your award or nomination into publicity
*Know the difference between an amateur and professional presentation
*What you can do to position for awards

Awards are an excellent way to position a client, business associate or oneself for recognition and FREE publicity. The publicity received is often worth thousands of dollars. The following tips will give you an overview of writing and submitting a nomination that will stand out and say, “Pick me.”

Preparation: Knowing the right steps to take, people to nominate and what supporting documents are necessary saves time, frustration and incomplete submission. READ, Know and Follow the guidelines exactly for the nomination. If you have questions about the  instructions, ask the organization sponsoring the award. Don’t worry about asking a stupid question, they need your nomination and will respond to you.

Nominee’s Permission: It is essential to ask the intended honoree’s permission to nominate him or her for an award. Explain the award and let the nominee know up front if financial data is required. Some nominees are uncomfortable with disclosing financial information and will elect not to continue.

Supporting material: If there are supporting documents or letters of support required, start gathering them immediately. The supporting documents and letters can be referenced in the nomination write-up to illustrate strong points of the candidate.

Writing:  Give yourself plenty of time to write. Figure at least 10 hours for each nomination. This covers research, interviewing, verifying material and writing. List each criteria and answer that only. Use short and brief sentences with strong follow-up points.  Long sentences and narratives are boring. The committee soon gets tired of reading and will start to skim over material.

Editing: Have the nominee review and verify what you have written.  If you are unsure of a fact, do not use it. Avoid long and windy descriptive sentences.  Make sure you have followed the guidelines strictly. If it states no more than 5 pages, stick to that!

Submission: Make sure All information requested is enclosed. Do not guess on postage if mailing. Get proof of mailing or delivery verification of nomination. Make sure you have the name of the person who received it.

Congratulate Yourself: You did it! It is important know that what you are doing makes the nominee feel great.

In her early career, she worked as an art director and graphic designer for various book publishing companies in New York City including Penguin and Macmillan. She has designed hundreds of book covers in most genres. Her book design work is represented in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.

Susan has received numerous awards in graphic and website design from organizations and publications including the Art Directors Club of New York, Desi, Graphis, the Print Regional Design Annual, The Society of Illustrators, and Graphic Design USA.

Launched in 2011 is Susan's one-on-one creative coaching for entrepreneurs, Visual Broadcasting™, for start-ups, solopreneurs and companies wanting to rebrand, to build a new visual footprint. Sessions include: zeroing in on your exact target audience, branding and creative conceptualization, print marketing, social media and marketing strategy plans.
Susan founded Broadcast Louder, a webinar series for entrepreneurs and small business owners.  Susan is an entrepreneur, brand visibility and visual footprint strategist on a mission to help other creatives and entrepreneurs be as skilled in developing their brand, learning to market and promote their businesses, as they are in creating and developing their products and services. She hosts and celebrates the guest speakers who join in for the “Creativity + Abundance” webinar series, and together they share the most important aspects of running a business, from branding and building the right type of website and e-commerce, to knowing how to sell effectively and build a fan base in social media.

Susan has always been attracted to organizations and green initiatives that will help the planet. She has donated her design work to a variety of organizations, including the Hoboken 9/11 Memorial Committee, Hoboken Jubilee Center for Children, Central Avenue Special Improvement District (Jersey City Heights), Actors Shakespeare Company at New Jersey City University, Hudson Theatre Ensemble, Chameleon Theatre Company Ltd, Planet Cents, Eco Libris, Susan G. Komen for the Cure (Central and South Jersey), and Project SOAR.

Susan most recently lead a panel discussion "Brand Recognition vs Killer Content" at Internet Week NY 2012, having won the "impact" category of the Make the Stage Panel competition.  In 2011 at Savor the Success's Rock the World in NYC, she was an expert on a social media panel. She has been interviewed in print and on the radio about branding, marketing, design, Frogs Are Green and Broadcast Louder's webinar series. She is a guest blogger for the New York Etsy Group, Circle Marketing, YourTango, and Social Buzz Club.

Speaking engagements for 2013 include: NAWBO Pittsburgh (3/22/13); Panel expert at BookExpo-Javits Center (uPublishU) (6/2/13); Class series on Brand Visibility in Hudson County, NJ.

Susan co-founded FROGS ARE GREEN LLC, to increase awareness about the massive worldwide amphibian decline (up to one-third of species are threatened with extinction). Because frogs are an indicator species of a healthy environment, she hopes to spread the message that healthy frogs mean a healthy planet for all.

There are still so many creatives and small business owners that do not have an active presence on the web. Just this past week I came across a professional who has no website, and isn’t to be found on Google. It’s important to be sure you and your brand are in snyc.

If you want others to remember your brand and what you do, either be unique in what you’re offering or selling, create an interesting and/or personal intro / elevator speech that gets them interested, or design the logo and graphics so it stays with them also.

Consistency is the key to success. Over time you build trust, fans and clients.

Go Ahead, Cheat on Your Taxes or Just Take Your Home Office Deductions

Cheating on your taxes is no joke. It's a real crime punishable by stringent fines and/or imprisonment. But there are legitimate deductions that you could be taking as a business owner or even an employee for home office deductions. But you have got to do it right and legally.
