Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Presents Public Record A Pittsburgh Biennial Exhibition

Exhibition Opening & Reception | Sept. 26, 2014 | 5:30 – 9 PM
Pittsburgh Biennial Public Record
Public Record—a nine-person multimedia exhibition in celebration of Pittsburgh artists—explores love, absurdity, surveillance, gaming, and identity. Artists include Rafael Abreu-Canedo, Matthew Biederman (with Aljosa Abrahamsberg, Marko Peljhan, and Brian Springer), Carolina Loyola-Garcia, Paolo Pedercini, Caroline Record, Paul Rosenblatt, Martha Rial, Susanne Slavick, and Two Girls Working.
Among the Biennial installations is Paul Rosenblatt’s Well Played: Paul’s Vinyl Records—held in 707 Penn Gallery—which features recordings of live and electronic performances that were manufactured, marketed, sold, collected, and (well) played before the artist collected them again. Visitors to the gallery can dig through the artist’s collection and play records, and an interactive component to the exhibition allows visitors to virtually “dig-in” to the collection and play records online.

Sept. 19-21, 2014 | Heinz Hall
“There can be no doubt that Maestro Lorin Maazel had a significant impact on the musical life of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the music world as a whole. I, myself, played many times under his baton and was struck by his prodigious talent and quest for perfection,” said Maestro Honeck. “He left behind a core of musical leaders that still define the Pittsburgh Symphony today and an incredible standard of playing. As one of his successors, I am deeply indebted to him for creating the ideal culture of musicians and the music-making exemplified in this orchestra.”

Teslatune (2014) is dedicated to the inventor Nikola Tesla. The installation emits sound that comes from an alternating current transformer, which is led through a programmer (time-adjusted frequency equaliser and switch box) to channel the sound through eight different outputs—pipes. These eight pipes of different lengths hang from the galley’s ceiling, producing what seem to be different sounds, but the frequency is always the same, 60 Hz. The lengths of the pipes affect the pitch. Pétursson has stated about his practice: “I am always trying to capture phenomena such as sound, water, fire, shadow and light, and channel them along new grooves, turn them into something other than what they are. These are phenomena that you feel and think about, but never see.”

When the EmpressofBiz, JoAnn Forrester and I go there alone or with friends we try to order small amounts of a lot of things to share because the food is so wonderful and the pairings are so delightfully original.
- Tai cat fish bites
- lobster bisque loaded with lobster meat
- the absolute best New England Clam Chowder
- Ceasar salad with white anchovies and house made crostini
- shrimp and lobster pizza with white sauce on super thin flat crust
Oh and the absolute best summer time dessert: strawberries, blue berries, giant blackberries and raspberries covered with house made whipped cream--delightful.
