DeBolt Unlimited has been providing transportation to Western Pennsylvania since the present owner's namesake needed a means to deliver hay, feed, and grain from his warehouse to his customers in 1895. From those horse and wagon days, we have progressed through gasoline-powered wagons, trucks, moving vans, tractor-trailers, transit busses, and deluxe parlor coaches to supersonic aircraft. Our philosophy has been to provide our customers with the best transportation service possible in a way of which we can be most proud. In spite of wars, economic diasters, and times of unprecedented social upheaval, that tradition of transportation excellence continues today.
We have always felt that businesses had an obligation not just to their customers, but to their communities as well. In this regard, we pride ourselves on some of our achievements
2002 DeBolt provides transportation for two United States "presidents' within two weeks: President George W. Bush during his visit with the Quecreek miners and "President" Jed Bartlet during the filming of "The West Wing's" season premiere episode. In the opening scene a national audience of over 10 million sees DeBolt Unlimited motorcoaches.
2001 The first time in history that two athletes in one city in two different sports (Lynn Swann & Bill Mazeroski) are inducted into their respective Football & Baseball Halls of Fame on one weekend. DeBolt proudly creates and exclusively provides tours to both ceremonies in August.
2000 In one of the closest presidential elections in history, DeBolt provides transportation services for the campaigns of both Al Gore and George Bush.
1999 1999 Dallas Stars NHL Hockey Team chooses DEBOLT UNLIMITED for transportation in their only Pittsburgh appearance during the '98-'99 season. Four months later they win their first Stanley Cup.

Economic Summit to Be Held in Pittsburgh

World leaders to hold economic summit in Pittsburgh
Article from Pittsburgh Post Gazette
Full article at: Click on title above!

Thursday, May 28, 2009

By Ed Blazina and Rich Lord, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Pittsburgh will host the world's major economic powers at a G20 Summit in September.

The White House made the announcement at a press briefing in Washington, D.C. this afternoon. The summit will be held on Sept. 24 and 25.

Presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs said the U.S. agreed to host the next summit during the London meeting earlier in the spring. Pittsburgh is "a good place" to hold the summit because of its recovery from the decline of the steel industry in the 1980s, he said.

At the Pittsburgh Summit, President Barack Obama will meet with leaders representing 85 percent of the world's economy to take stock of progress made since the most recent summits and discuss further actions to assure a sound and sustainable recovery from the global economic and financial crisis, officials said.

"With leaders already scheduled to be in the United States in September to attend the United Nations General Assembly, President Obama offered to host the Summit and leaders of the G20 welcomed the invitation," a White House statement said. "Pittsburgh has demonstrated a commitment to employing new and green technology to further economic recovery and development. The summit will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Downtown Pittsburgh, an exemplar of that commitment. The facility is proud to have a LEED Gold Certification from the U.S Green Building Council for leadership in energy and environmental design."

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Pittsburgh," said city Chief of Staff Yarone Zober. "This is a chance for us to showcase our city, and our region, for the world."

He said that Mr. Obama, perhaps joined by First Lady Michelle Obama, would be among the world leaders in attendance, "as well as hundreds of dignitaries, world leaders from around the globe, and thousands of journalists from around the world."

Mr. Zober said the decision to hold the summit here was based on repeated contact between White House staff, Mayor Luke Ravenstahl and his staff, and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and his staff.

Among the selling points: "Pittsburgh has really been a model for an economic turnaround," he said, noting the smokestacks-to-knowledge transformation of the regional economy and the development of environmentally friendly "green" job sectors.

It doesn't hurt, he said, that "President Obama is a big Pittsburgh fan in so many ways, and we're glad of it."

He acknowledged that preparing the city to host the world's leaders would be a big job.

"We're going to be ready to welcome the world to Pittsburgh in September," he said. "We're going to make sure that this city shines. . . . This is potentially one of the largest things to happen in Pittsburgh."

The short-term economic impact to hotels, restaurants and other Downtown businesses is significant, he said. So may be the long-term impacts of introducing so many top leaders and international journalists to the city, hopefully including its neighborhoods, he said.

The city's public safety departments have already begun coordinating security planning with the Secret Service, he said, but details are not yet worked out.

Mr. Onorato said hosting the summit is a sign of the area's economic stability and environmental innovations. Pittsburgh's convention center is the largest LEED-certified convention center in the world.

"I want to thank President Obama for giving us this remarkable opportunity to showcase our accomplishments and transformation on a world stage," he said.

The G20 includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union (along with the European Central Bank).

The most recent summit occurred in April in London, Mr. Obama's first major international conference.

Previous conferences have spawned demonstrations that have sometimes become violent in the host cities. Pittsburgh had a peaceful protest in April during the London conference when marchers went from Market Square to the Federal Building on Liberty Avenue.

The Financial Times of London calls Pittsburgh's Lawrenceville neighborhood a "Diamond in the Rust," and quotes former CMU professor Richard Florida's continuing admiration for the area.
"He did the research for the book that made his name, The Rise of the Creative Class, there, and he thinks Lawrenceville – with its inexpensive housing stock, growing number of restaurants, bars, arts outlets and specialty shops – has what it takes to attract and keep precisely the type of people he describes in that book – the designers, engineers, technology workers and artists he sees as the drivers of contemporary economic growth," the article states.

Roving Pittsburgher

Have you ever heard of a runner who waits until all the other runners leave the start line before he takes off? Well that is exactly what The Pittsburgh Promise Charity Chaser did on Sunday at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon.
Dane Rauschenberg runs a marathon almost every weekend. This weekend he ran the Pittsburgh Marathon to raise money for The Pittsburgh Promise. He will raise money by starting Dead Last, and by passing as many runners as possible during the course of the race. Instead of getting sponsors per mile, Pittsburgh Promise asked for sponsors to make a pledge based on the number of runners that Dane passes on the course. There were 10,000 runners registered for the Pittsburgh Marathon. Dane anticipated passing 90% of them. 100,000
The Promise is transforming the lives of Pittsburgh Public School students by helping their dreams of a college education to become reality. Before you decide if you will pledge, please take a moment and read about Sarmed, a 2008 Schenley High School graduate. He finished high school with a 2.0 grade point average and just squeaked into a Promise Scholarship. Every time I tell his story, I watch people gasp with joy at the power this program has to motivate students to dream big about their lives. Steeltown Heroes—Don Carter

While an injury ended his baseball career, Don, who was recruited by the Small Business Administration, ended up as a “major league” player for small business owners throughout Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Carter enjoyed a 37-year career with the SBA, holding the final duties of the Pittsburgh Deputy District Director

In fact, he once estimated that he had been indirectly involved with some 20,000 SBA loans.

During his long tenure, Don recalled to staff members that he had held almost every district-level job with the agency.

“I’ve done loans, run the 8(a) program, worked in the disaster program, did counseling, training and was an SBDC project officer,” he once said joking. “I’ve done it all, there’s nothing I haven’t done except maybe get a loan.”

Throughout his career, Don had worn many hats, serving as assistant district director for minority small business; assistant district director for business development and acting district director in both West Virginia and Pittsburgh. In 1996, he relocated to Pittsburgh to assume the role of deputy district director.

Carter, who attended West Virginia State College, once worked for a telephone company, an entrepreneurial development company and even owned a daycare center.

He stated that he loved his job.

“I enjoy helping people and seeing people become successful and obtaining their dream,” he once said. “But, I am most proud of my involvement in the 8(a) program.”
He was born Jan. 3, 1942 and passed away at 67 -- April 14, 2009.
He served on a number of local business-related committees including the Minority Business Opportunity Committee, Minority Women Disadvantaged Business Enterprise and the African American Chamber of Commerce. His involvement did not go unnoticed as he was lauded three times by the Pittsburgh Federal Executive Board as Bronze Award winner for the Excellence in Government Awards program. He also was a recipient of the Minority Small Business Advocate award.

In closing, Don received many awards throughout his career at SBA, but his career was more than this. Don lost his dream to become a baseball player because the dear Lord had a higher calling for him. His true mission was to help small businesses become home run hitters. Don is looking down and smiling for having a great batting average in helping small businesses. When you think of Don, look up and say “thank you for the home run you gave my business.”

Roving Pittsburgher Report

"One Night Stand, Machine Improvisations"
I had made arrangements to go to “One Night Stand” and start out at Wood St. Galleries with Mary Ann Barnes. Well the exhibit was a noisy assault on the senses using computer generated images. I interviewed people outside and one gentleman from LA said he had come all this way to see it, and that all art was an assault on the senses. I never hooked up with Mary Ann but she did attend and when she got home was delighted that I suggested she go. We both went also to the Barbie art exhibit and the Czech exhibit and also the Apocalypse exhibit. The most Positive thing that I can say about is that this event celebrated our diversity in art expression here in Pittsburgh and the crowd was friendly and interactive with each other which was a great thing. So now I have written my roving Pittsburgher report about One Night Stand. Until Next week's report: JQS

Comedy interpretation about life in Communist Czechoslovakia, Dark references to “them” and when “they” will come, repetition of wordy existentialism makes for comedic fun and as a survivor of the sixties I found the reading of the play including the stage directions hysterical as did most of the audience. It’s a rare treat in an off beat genre, the cast is stellar and there is no scenery so you are faced with the stark reality of communist Chzechoslovakia while assaulted continually by Vaclav Havel’s existential humor. Word of caution, procrastinators beware you may decide that the excuse making Leopold, the philosopher protagonist is a self portrait. And as always there are no bad seats in the intimate Henry Heyman Theatre.

After theatre we went to Folino’s/ Tom’s Diner for a Tuscan frittata, yes a frittata filled with artichokes and roasted red peppers and asparagus for dinner.

Steel City Flyer

George Solomon Teagarden DeBolt is the President of DeBolt Unlimited Travel Services. As such, he is the third generation of his family to be associated with the transportation industry. His affiliation with the company began with a familiarization tour of the operation five days after his birth.

Mr. DeBolt is a student and aficionado of all forms of transportation. His interest has led him to skydive, ride the Orient Express, twice drive a “Moke” down the Pan American Highway to Panama, travel by school bus over the Andes Mountains, ride bulls in Belize and camels in Tunisia, finish the first Pittsburgh Marathon, and drive the German Gran Prix course at Nurburgring. As a licensed pilot he has landed aircraft at John F. Kennedy International Airport and flown gliders over the Mojave Desert.
1, The Steel City Flyer is the brainchild of a couple of railroad guys in Green Tree and the owner of a fleet of buses in the Mon Valley, and no subsidy is asked.

The bus will link in Harrisburg to high-speed Amtrak trains that go to Philadelphia and New York. The Flyer team hopes to eventually allow a bus rider transferring to the train to buy one ticket to cover both fares.

George DeBolt, the third-generation chief of the DeBolt transportation companies in Homestead, is partnering with Henry Posner III and Bob Pietrandrea, chairman and president of Railroad Development Corp., a Green Tree-based company with international rail investments.

Mr. DeBolt said he and the rail men may move people in different ways but both "think intermodally."

Positively Pittsburgh Live Host and Publisher Designated 2009 Journalist of the Year

Pittsburgh “techno granny” honored as the Small Business Administration’s National Journalist of the Year

PITTSBURGH -- Her byline has never appeared in a newspaper and she’s never hosted a radio show or worked at a television station, yet Joanne Quinn Smith recently was lauded as the Small Business Administration’s (SBA) 2009 Journalist of the Year.

Smith twits, blogs and hosts podcasts – embracing the new medium – to promote Pittsburgh, technology, marketing and professional networking.

Our champion began her quest by winning at the district office level when she was chosen as the Pittsburgh District’s Journalist of the Year. Then, like the other 68 district winners, her nomination was forwarded to her respective regional office, in this case Region 3, which comprises 7 districts; Delaware, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia . After becoming the regional winner, one of ten throughout the country, Quinn Smith’s package was sent to Washington, D.C. for the national competition and she was selected as the national Journalist of the Year.

Carl Knoblock, Pittsburgh SBA district director, stated that Quinn Smith’s innovation sets her apart from traditional print and broadcast journalists. “She’s not only using social networking but also strives to show persons how to use these new technologies,” he said.

Quinn Smith and nine other local small business owners and advocates will be honored at the Pittsburgh District’s May 21st awards luncheon which will be held at the Omni William Penn Hotel, downtown Pittsburgh.

Volunteerism led 59-year-old Quinn Smith into computer-based journalism. As a member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Pittsburgh Chapter,
http://www.nawbopittsburgh.org Quinn Smith, a marketer and former owner of a limousine company, was delegated to promote the organization – via the web. “I hosted my first Positively Pittsburgh Live podcast in 2007 and all of the NAWBO women jumped in to listen and offer support.

According to Quinn Smith, Positively Pittsburgh Live treats listeners to stories not found in Pittsburgh’s mainstream media. Each Monday, she interviews three or four guests to tout the town. http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/18520

“Its news that slips through the cracks and its all positive items about Pittsburgh,” she added. “We’ve got a roving Pittsburgher segment which is a report of what happened that was fun and Steel Town Heroes that showcases volunteers. It’s a site for and by Pittsburghers”

In two years, Quinn Smith said her show has grown to an audience of 50,000 listeners and has spawned two spinoffs – the “Techno Granny Show” and “Monday Morning Marketeer”.
“Techno Granny updates people about 21st century technology,” she explained. http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/30986
“And Monday Morning Marketeer provides listeners with 15 minutes of guerrilla marketing tips – all for under $100.” http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/tscmd/tc/33960

“It’s great to do something positive about Pittsburgh and receive national recognition for it”, she said. LIsteners wanted additional contact so I started an online multimedia magazine thru Penny Haynes, developer of OnLineCommunityMagazines.
The title is PositivelyPittsburghLiveMagazine.com and is free to users and advertisers can acquire their own internet radio and TV channel inside the magazine. Again it is all monitored for A rated content and only Positive News.
http://www.positivelypittsburghlivemagazine.com

Before her podcasts go to video in July, Quinn Smith will head to Washington, D.C. for the 46th annual celebration of National Small Business Week to attend a series of galas and events as the National Journalist of the Year.

Small Business Week will feature a series of forums on Energy (Going Green), Business Financing and Social Media, designed to help entrepreneurs with current, real-world issues that impact their business. In addition, there will be a town hall forum to discuss small business concerns. Small businesses nationwide will be able to view the forums and town hall via live webcast online. Also, the Small Business Week Cyber Café, sponsored by Trend Micro, will provide free Wi-Fi to all attendees.

Additional information on National Small Business Week, including a detailed schedule and registration information, is online at www.NationalSmallBusinessWeek.com.

In 1889, Mollie Austin asked her husband James if he knew of a better rug cleaner, James decided to make his own cleaner. After many versions, and Mollie's approval Austin's Carpet Cleaner was born. Cooking the formula on the kitchen stove, James sold his product out of his Pittsburgh, PA grocery store. By word of mouth, others asked for Austin's Carpet Cleaner; planting the seed for what is today a fourth generation family company that manufactures a wide variety of household and institutional cleaning products.
Certainly Mollie and James would be proud of today's fourth generation of Austin's who still uphold the family motto:
"Produce quality products for people and they'll come back."
Business is steady and Austin’s is hiring.

When working with our clients to help them to plan for life's setbacks, to help them save money and also to help them make money, we put their interests at the forefront of everything we do. Women's needs are my specialty.

• Best month ever in March!
• People are looking for the best value, not just the lowest price.
• People seem to be stepping up their understanding of their personal financial situation and taking an active role instead of a passive one.
• Our region has some unique qualities and instead of worrying about what we are not, we need to capitalize on what we are.
• People who have not lived elsewhere don't realize how unique and wonderful Pittsburgh is - and that every city/region has problems. The grass is NOT greener elsewhere!

Organization Background
The MLK Community Mural Project is for Pittsburgh the biggest and brightest art venture in the city's history, with murals scheduled to cover 26 walls throughout the city and already engaging hundreds of Pittsburgh's biggest and brightest residents.
Currently, we've produced more than a dozen murals along the MLK East Busway, spanning eight neighborhoods. The dimensions are larger than life. The colors are purposefully vivid and visually stimulating. The images are jazzy and abstract. The narratives painted are of great historical significance. Most importantly, we are developing the vast artistic and intellectual wealth represented by our gifted Pittsburgh youth.

K.R.U.N.K.
From his Keystone Church in Hazelwood, Rev. Tim Smith, 47, runs the K.R.U.N.K. (Kreating Realistic Urban Newschool Knowledge) Movement through his nonprofit Center of Life. K.R.U.N.K. teaches teens how to write, engineer, perform and market their hip-hop and jazz music - with a message. Established in 2005, K.R.U.N.K. has 15 student-members, ages 15-17, who are booked for performances and assemblies through 2007, including a tour of England and France. Two K.R.U.N.K. CDs will appear in February.
Kreating Realistic Urban New-school Knowledge

The KRUNK Movement is a student lead music and health initiative that uses jazz, hip-hop, dance, recording & engineering, visual art and equipment management to communicate positive messages about physical and mental health to teens and pre-teens. The movement is designed as a production company and also serves to teach students how to start and run a small business. The movement started in 2005 with students brain-storming ideas that brought the KRUNK Movement into existence. Through KM the students have created a venue through which they can use their God given talents to impact the lives of their peers and earn income. The KRUNK Movement has completed three phases: The first phase was the creation of the movement as a small business. The second phase established the movement as a production company and a student health education provider. The third phase secured KM as Gateway to the arts artist in residence and opened up the doors for the students to take their message of physical and mental health into the Pittsburgh Public Schools. Last year the KRUNK Movement students performed for 46 organizations and produced two new CDs’. 100% of the students who have participated in KRUNK have been accepted to a major University with either a full or partial scholarship. It has been an incredible three years.
One of Tim’s mentors is Dr. John Perkins: the founder of the Christian Community Development Association. Like Dr. Perkins Tim’s philosophy is plain and simple:

We believe in giving people fish if they need it. But only so they can taste it and want more.

Then we believe in teaching people how to fish so that they can take care of themselves and their families and be a contagious example to others.

National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship
NFTE's History and Overview

Founded in 1987 by Steve Mariotti (a former business executive and entrepreneur) while he was a public high school teacher in New York City’s South Bronx, NFTE began as a program to prevent dropouts and improve academic performance among students who were at risk of failing or quitting school. Combining his business background with his desire to teach at-risk students, Steve discovered that when low-income youth are given the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship, their innate “street smarts” can easily develop into “academic smarts” and “business smarts.” Through entrepreneurship, youth discover that what they are learning in the classroom is relevant to the real world.
NFTE is widely viewed as a world leader in promoting entrepreneurial literacy among youth. When young people participate in our programs they begin to unlock their unique entrepreneurial creativity, have a greater understanding of the free enterprise system, improve the quality of their lives, and dare to dream for bright futures.
To date, NFTE has worked with over 186,000 young people from low-income communities in programs across the U.S. and around the world.
NFTE Greater Pittsburgh opened in 1995. Funded almost entirely by charitable gifts NFTE has partnerships with nearly 30 schools and not for profit and faith based organizations that serve primarily young people in lower income communities. While all young people would benefit from a NFTE program NFTE's mission is to use charitable funds to benefit disadvantaged youth.

Helping youth understand and experience the power of OWNERSHIP and how ENTREPRENEURIAL THINKING can help them discover new possibilities....for life are what distinguish NFTE from all other youth development strategies.
