New Roving Pittsburgher Review!
How to Become a Deadhead in One Night
Review by Joanne-Quinn Smith

I am not sure how I missed Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead when he was alive, but I was curious enough to see how the Pittsburgh Symphony would mesh with Warren Haynes on lead vocals and guitar from Government Mule.

Kenny G and The Pittsburgh Symphony
Review by JoAnn Forrester
Saturday I saw  Kenny Gee play superbly with the Pittsburgh Symphony. The man is amazing, his ability to hold notes and make his soprano  saxophone talk is legendary.

CLO's The Phantom Entertains
Review by Joyce Kane
The Pittsburgh CLO's production of Kopit & Yeston's Phantom combines enough of the drama of the more well-known Andrew Lloyd Webber version of the love story to be reminiscent, yet is unique enough in its handling of the story to stand apart.

Roving Pittsburgher Report

Warren Haynes on lead vocals and guitar from Government Mule and the Allman Brothers, with the Pittsburgh Symphony
I am not sure how I missed Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead when he was alive, but I was curious enough to see how the Pittsburgh Symphony would mesh with Warren Haynes on lead vocals and guitar from Government Mule. Well, I have always been a Pittsburgh Symphony fan but I think the combination has converted me to a Deadhead also.

I sat next to a baby boomer who is a symphony fan and her 32 year old son who is a Grateful Dead aficionado. Thanks to Mike G., I have a picture of Warren Hayes’ Guitar and many of the song titles. Not being a die hard fan before the concert I knew songs but not titles. So thank you Mike G. And thank you to the Pittsburgh Symphony, you can read my review here.

Luke Wholey’s Wild Alaskan Grill
2106 Penn Ave Pittsburgh, PA 15222, (412) 904-4509
Luke Wholey’s got the nod from two of my cousins, Clarine Lizana from Oregon where they know seafood and Josh Kurnot from Morgantown, West Virginia where as a college student he EATS FOOD! This time we had of course, my favorite, beyon oysters on the half shell, apparently they are half price on Tuesdays, all raw oysters. We also tried the Lobster Bisque Fries, of course my cousin Clarine and I being Senior Citizens graciously allowed Josh to finish them after we had just a taste. And we tried the lump crabmeat salad and the crab cake salad. Yum. For dessert we all shared the white chocolate raspberry cake, not the traditional dessert for any restaurant especially a seafood restaurant, absolutely moist and unbelievable.

Isis Egyptian Café
815 Brookline Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15226, (412) 207-2485
Tue-Fri: 11a-2p / 4p-8p, Mondays - Closed, Saturday: 11a - 8p, Sunday Brunch: 10a-2p

We have to give credit to our Indian friend, Meenakshi Kapoor, who recently returned to India and tried to get us to go before she left. Sorry Meenakshi, but so glad you recommended.

Delightfully fun décor and wonderful staff run by brothers Ahmed and Ash and their mother Salwa. She taught us to say in Egyptian, “God bless the cooks hands.” But we need to return again so we can remember how to say it. Well that’s just an excuse, we are going back for the wonderful food. For appetizers we had V-Tamatem bel Khimer which is yogurt dip with garlic and cucumbers. Another Mezza (appetizer) was Tamatem bel Gibna—Egyptian cheese mixed with tomatoes and olive oil. Tasting delectable and priced just right at $2.50 I tried the Bamia which is okra stewed with tomato sauce and Egyptian seasonings came with amazing rice and side salad for $6.50. You could add beef for an additional $2.50. My guest had Mouska which in Egyptian version with eggplant baked with onion and peppers, also $6.50. And for dessert we had Egyptian bread pudding made with a special pastry that will make you throw stones at American bread pudding. Great value, ambiance, price and atmosphere.

Clifford, the Big Red Dog and Children’s Museum 30th Anniversary

Grill on 7th
Under new management , not new ownership. We tried it after the Children’s Museum. It was delightful to sit outside and eat on a warm day. First time experience for dinner. We tried the seafood terrine with clams, vegetables, whitefish and shrimp. What a meal, good quantity of seafood and vegetables and the coconut lime fume it was cooked in, we wanted to bottle and take home. Also tried the Southwest Chicken Nachos, first time to have nachos made in house, wonderful and loads of fresh chunks of grilled chicken, jalapenos, olives and just the right amount of cheese.

On Saturday Night, Fleetwood Mac Tribute Bands at Hard Rock Café
Sidewinder Band and also Chain
Close your eyes and you will think you are listening to Stevie Nicks and company.

Nominated BEST Tribute Band In Western Pa. Rated as one of the BEST Fleetwood Mac Tribute Bands in the World.

Their rendition of Rayanna was amazing and White Rabbit left you spellbound.

From the pony tails and prayer caps, shawls and long capes reminiscent of Stevie Nicks and props used by Kimmy Scholl – (Stevie Nicks), to the soulful representation of Christine McVie by the blonde keyboard player Sandy Anderson you would think you are transported in time to a Fleetwood Mac concert.

“Oh, thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
They say women, they will come and they will go

When the rain washes you clean, you'll know
You'll know”

From Dreams

You will know when you have been entertained by the Chain and the two divas of the show ain’t going away.

Now Post the top Ten Things About Your Business HERE.

Steeltown Hero

From District 4 Representative Natalia Rudiak in the section of her newsletter called: Good news you don't hear on the news

Elder-ado
Eler-ado has been an important institution in South Pittsburgh for years, providing care and
services for senior citizens and our communities. And for nineteen years, Steve Hutter has been at the steering wheel, serving as executive director since 1994. In late May, Councilman Kraus and I issued a proclamation for Steve, whose oversight of the Knoxville, McKinley Park, and Carrick senior centers has earned our deep respect and admiration. May 23, 2013 was declared Stephen L. Hutter Day in the City of Pittsburgh. Read the proclamation here. Also, read a short profile of Steve in the Tribune-Review here. I was honored to receive Elder-ado’s 11th Annual Distinguished Service Award on May 23 while we celebrated Steve’s years of service--and I look forward to continuing to work with Elder-ado to provide for South Pittsburgh’s senior citizens.

After Beechview’s core business district was left in distress when a bankrupt developer fled the country, revitalizing Broadway and Beechview Avenues seemed like an uphill battle.
In the past several years, though, we’ve seen a steady glimmer of hope. The IGA, BREW coffee shop, Tienda La Jimenez, Casa Rasta--and more--are cementing Beechview as a unique food destination. On Saturday, June 22, Beechview hosted its second annual Taste of Beechview food festival, attracting restaurants, farmers, and food vendors from all over. Crucial to this food festival has been Crested Duck Charcuterie, an artisan meat market at 1603 Broadway Avenue. On Monday, June 17, I welcomed Kevin Costa to Council to receive a proclamation honoring Crested Duck for their efforts in championing Beechview through this food festival. Read the proclamation here

And congratulations are in order for Sherry Miller Brown, a Carrick resident and director of McCarl Center for Nontraditional Student Success at the University of Pittsburgh’s College of General Studies. She was recently honored for her commitment to Pitt by the chancellor, citing her “respect to the amount of time, degree of enthusiasm, magnitude of involvement, and depth of personal connection” to the Pitt community. She was awarded a 2013 Chancellor’s Award for Staff for Excellence in Service to the University. Congratulations!

Cultural Clues

Quantum Theatre to open the premiere by an American company of Mnemonic
Quantum Theatre, known for its deep experimentation, including staging its productions in unique places that aren’t theatres, is the first American company to be entrusted with British company Complicite’s devised 1999 text, Mnemonic. The show won the London Drama Critics Award for Best Play, and its subsequent Off-Broadway run at John Jay College won numerous Drama Desk and Lortel Awards, including ‘most unique theatrical experience.’ Mnemonic helped put Simon McBurney, Complicite’s internationally renowned artistic leader, on the map as one of the greatest theatre artists of our age.

The show is an exploration of memory, telling parallel, seemingly unconnected stories: the brouhaha surrounding the discovery of an unidentified body in the Italian/Austrian Alps; and a woman’s quest through Eastern Europe in search of the father she never knew. We learn the story of that woman, Alice, through her boyfriend, Virgil, whom she’s abruptly left. Like him, we’re two steps behind her but trying to catch up… and suddenly brilliant Mnemonic connects the dots not only between these two, and between Alice and her missing father, but keeps those dots going back, back, to Neolithic times in the greater human story, to this glacial corpse – a real person whose finding riveted the scientific community, and soon the world, in 1991. Because he wasn’t the Italian piano teacher who went missing in the 1940s, and he wasn’t a couple hundred years old as next surmised, he was 5,200 years old. 5200. And exactly as he was when, exhausted, he laid his head on a rock never to rise again. Read the entire release here.

Pittsburgh Opera announces Paul’s Case as Second Stage Project
Pittsburgh Opera General Director Christopher Hahn has announced that Gregory Spears’s opera Paul’s Case is the Second Stage Project for 2014. The Second Stage Project is an additional showcase for the company’s Resident Artists, some of whom have gone on to sing on the world’s most famous stages. The opera runs February 22 – March 2, 2014 in the
Paul's Case
George R. White Studio at Pittsburgh Opera Headquarters.

Paul’s Case, by 36-year-old Gregory Spears, with a libretto by Mr. Spears and Kathryn Walat, is based on Willa Cather’s 1905 short story. Paul is a high school “dandy” whose artistic and social aspirations drive him to escape from sooty turn-of-the-century Pittsburgh. He defies his headmaster and his father, steals money, and goes to New York City to live the high life at the Waldorf Astoria. After a drunken night with a Yale student, reality comes crashing down, and Paul’s longings are crushed in a wrenching finale. Read the entire release here

SBA revises small business size standards
Jack Fitzpatrick, USA TODAY

The Small Business Administration has changed some of its standards that determine which businesses are small enough to receive benefits from the organization.
Story Highlights:
SBA revised standards for a small business will add 17,000 more companies

Those businesses are eligible for SBA-guaranteed loans and government contracts

Annual revenue size standards for 25 industries went to $35.5 million from $7 million

The federal government has -- in some cases, drastically -- revised standards that determine which businesses are small enough to receive Small Business Administration aid.

The rule changes affect 70 industries and go into effect July 22, when more than 17,000 firms not eligible for SBA benefits will begin to qualify, the SBA said Thursday.

For 25 industries, including consumer lending and sports team, among others, the average annual revenue size standard was increased to $35.5 million from $7 million.

There are two key benefits to qualifying as a small business, says Khem Sharma, chief of the SBA's division of size and standards.

Businesses become eligible for SBA-guaranteed loans and, more importantly, they are added to the agency's database of firms eligible for government contracts.

Federal agencies are supposed to give at least 23% of government-awarded contracts to small businesses, the Sharma said. Being included in the database makes it easier for agencies to locate small businesses, especially when they are searching for potential contractors based on specific criteria.

For example, says SBA spokeswoman Tiffani Clements, "If you're looking for woman-owned businesses in different industries, you can do a search for those particular businesses."

Being in the database puts small businesses on a more level playing field with much-larger rivals. However, there are advantages and disadvantages to the revised standards, Sharma says. Some small businesses will have more room to grow without fear of losing government contract eligibility.

The downside is that some smaller companies might lose out on contracts to the new "larger small businesses," Sharma said.

The SBA plans to keep a close watch on the awarding of federal contracts to determine whether adding more companies to the database is beneficial. If the SBA concludes it's harmful, it will affect the next round of revisions to size standards, Sharma says.

Typically, the SBA reviews size standards about every five years, in part to adjust for the impact of inflation on a company's annual revenue and other metrics. This round of adjustments was based on market shifts, including the average size of companies, within 70 industries.

More rule changes are coming the next few years as part of the implementation of the 2010 Small Business Jobs Act, the SBA said.
