The State of Black America 2012: Occupy the Vote to Educate, Employ and Empower issues a charge to address the economic and educational challenges we face by ardently defending and exercising the right to vote.  This year, defense of the right to vote remains critical as legislation that would require a government-issued photo ID, shorten voting hours, curtail early voting, and/or impose absurd penalties limiting the registration process is pending in 27 states.  This attack on the ability of our citizens to fully participate in their government comes at a particularly perilous time for the poor, communities of color and seniors who live in assited living or high rises.

The State of Black America, issued annually by the National Urban League since 1976, centers on an Equality Index, which ranks blacks and Latinos against white Americans on issues such as income, homeownership, health insurance and education. The 2012 National Urban League Equality Index documents significantly reduced minority voter registration and voter participation in the 2010 mid-term elections.  This lost ground in civic engagement offset modest gains in education and health.  For African Americans, this resulted in an essentially unchanged 2012 Equality Index of 71.5% (from 71.4% in 2011) and for Latinos, a decline from 76.7% in 2011 to 76.1% in 2012.

Roving Pittsburgher Report
Official Blues Brothers Revue
Attended this show at the Byham Theatre and I’ll tell ya, black suits and skinny black ties abounded! It was truly the official Blues Brothers Revue. You can read a great review here, by Gregg Mathis. It was really too outstanding for words. The music was lively, it was a great crowd, and I honestly had a hard time sitting down. It’s one of those shows that you just can’t help clapping your hands, tapping your feet, and bobbing your head the whole way through.
Doubleday Bar next to Renaissance Theatre on Sixth Street
We headed over here after the show and were only expecting bar food, but were pleasantly surprised. We had amazing stuffed jalapeno pretzels and I think the best grilled cheese in the city. You don’t think grilled cheese could really be that different, but this was on Ciabatta bread with cheddar and Monterey jack and was really great. We also had spicy chicken tenders that were handbreaded in homemade buffalo sauce; I really recommend this restaurant.

Maple Restaurant, 463 Maplewood Avenue, Ambridge
This restaurant is known for its roast beef, but we had the chicken cutlet which was ¾ as large as your plate and delicious. We also had the beef noodle soup, which was reminiscent of your grandma’s recipe. Plus the prices were great, with most meals at 8.99 or less.

Tambellini’s on 7th Street
You have to check out the St Patrick’s Day grotto in the window of our favorite Italian Restaurant. It’s all decorated and is really a sight to see. And make sure you stop in and get some of their crab cakes and Surf and Turf Italian appetizer. Their crab cakes rival some of the best ones I’ve had in New York City. Also great is the bistecca and shrimp and the raviolis.

Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Street Car Named DesireThis interpretation of Tennessee Williams play is both erotic and tragic, symbolizing Blanche Dubois fall from grace after discovering her husband’s illicit affair with a man on their wedding night and his subsequent suicide. The period costumes and scenery depicting the decay of the grand hotel were beautifully done. Those who did not heed “for mature audiences only” should consider the subject matter. Considering the racy topic of the Williams play, I found the ballet not only erotic but tastefully done. It is not a ballet for the traditionalist or the biblical but well done considering the interpretation of the subject matter.

Ekoostik Hookah
This five piece improvisational and psychedelic rock band form Ohio has been touring for over 20 years. They were awesome at the Thunderbird Café on Saturday night, which is a really cool venue in Lawrenceville on Butler Street. Thunderbird is one of the few local venues that supports live music seven nights a week. This was a wonderful time!
