ROVING PITTSBURGHER REPORT
Wendy and John Cibula’s Franklin Inn Mexican Restaurant
2313 Rochester Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237, 412-366-4140
Roving Pittsburgher Gregg Mathis and I enjoyed great Margaritas in a Mason Jar. Best margarita bargain in Pittsburgh and as good as the Margaritas at Fidel’s in Marina Del Mar, San Diego, California. Also great homemade, made by the owner, Butter Pecan Ice Cream with Mexican hot fudge. Yum!
Opa Greek American Cuisine
Yes went there with the KIA Hamster and secret of secrets the KIA Hamster is Greek.
Open for a year on Grove Rd in Castle Shannon, has the TechnoGranny Seal of approval for Greek Mousaka. And they are open for breakfast and lunch. Todd our waiter told me an old Greek lady makes not just the Mousaka but also the Pastistio.
Chinese New Year Celebration at Pitts Student Union
Roving Pittsburghers Meenakshi Kapoor, her father (visiting from Punjab State in India), and I. All got our names written in Chinese and found out that the alphabet or rather characters are sounds and not letters. We also learned to say, “thank you” in Chinese which I promptly forgot after I left so I cannot enlighten you. Many of our friends from Global Pittsburgh were there. Event was put on by CSSA which I think stands for the Chinese Student Society of America.
We then went to Gullifty’s on Murray Avenue in Squirrel hill for their famous seven inch high desserts but ended up eating Oven Roasted Garlic on cheese paninis and artichoke and garlic dip on foccacia and called that dessert.
Strip District Sunday morning is usually a joy because I don’t like crowds however this Sunday it was packed with Steelers fans, music and Steelers memorabilia and revelry. What I discovered is if you can stand the cold don’t buy from the first vendor but shop a bit. I purchased Stairway to Seven T-shirts from a vendor, walked up the street and decided that I needed one more. First shirts cost me $7.00 and the second cost me six and then walked a little further and the same shirt was being sold for $6.00. That’s Steelers Competitive Free Enterprise in the Strip ‘District.
Friday evening Roving Pittsburgher Meenakshi Kappoor and I will be entertaining her father Padim at our favorite Middle Eastern Restaurant in East Liberty, Khalil’s. I promised Padim I would tie his daughter to a chair so he could get up and dance with the belly dancer. Did I mention her father, Paddim is 78 and runs rings literally around this 61 year old.
WHERE IN THE WORLD IS TECHNO GRANNY THIS WEEK?
Madagascar, the Musical at the Benedum Center, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust was gracious enough to give me and my entire family media tickets for the opening on Thursday evening.
