Artile Lange, Saturday, April 13, 8pm • Byham Theater
Artie Lange
When Artie Lange joined the permanent cast of The Howard Stern Show in 2001, it was possibly the greatest thing ever to happen in the Stern universe, second only to the show’s move to the wild, uncensored frontier of satellite radio. Lange provided what Stern had yet to find all in the same place: a wit quick enough to keep up with his own, a pathetic self-image to dwarf his own, a personal history that was both heartbreaking and hilarious, and an ingrained sense of self-sabotage that continually kept things interesting. All of these things made Artie Lange a beloved member of the Stern family for 5 years and helped his memoir, Too Fat To Fish, become a New York Times bestseller.

Concert Italia at Pittsburgh Symphony
Hank Walshak and his bride attended and said they were humming Funiculi, Funicula,  all the way home.  For those uneducated in Italian folk songs, the words are:  English lyrics:

Some think the world is made for fun and frolic,
And so do I! And so do I!
Some think it well to be all melancholic,
To pine and sigh; to pine and sigh;
But I, I love to spend my time in singing,
Some joyous song, some joyous song,
To set the air with music bravely ringing
Is far from wrong! Is far from wrong!
Harken, harken, music sounds a-far!
Harken, harken, music sounds a-far!
Funiculì, funiculà, funiculì, funiculà!
Joy is everywhere, funiculì, funiculà!

Pittsburgh Premiere of Moulin Rouge® — The Ballet  Opens Valentine’s Day
Opening on Valentine’s Day, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre brings the mystique of Paris’ famed cabaret to the Benedum Center stage for the Pittsburgh premiere of Moulin Rouge® — The Ballet, Feb. 14-17, 2013.

The iconic cabaret, high-kicking cancan and extravagant excesses of  turn-of-the-century Paris set the scene for a story of love, ambition and heartbreak in Moulin Rouge®—The Ballet. Drawn to Paris by the city’s passion, struggling artist Matthew and launderette-turned-performer Nathalie find themselves swept into a passionate romance and the intoxicating nightlife of the Moulin Rouge.

Choreographer Jorden Morris, the creator behind PBT’s 2011 production of Peter Pan, laces contemporary and classical ballet with international influences from the vivacious French cancan to the fiery partnering of the Tango Café. The passion peaks with an intimate pas de deux set to  Debussy’s Claire de Lune on a bridge by the Eiffel Tower. The cabaret’s possessive proprietor Zidler, however, casts a shadow over their romance as he ensnares his newly-discovered performer and her lover in a dangerous love triangle. Its Greek To Me
1011 Brookline Blvd, Pittsburgh PA 15226 (412) 531-0400

ABSOLUTE BEST meat grape leaves, $1.50 each but well worth it. Gyros are not salty but deliciously seasoned. It has been there twelve years and their motto is Eat, Live and Love
All appetizers are between $2.00 and $5.00. Very congenial eat in dining room, quite small.  Fast to go and on street parking. Closed on Sundays in the winter, reopen on Sundays in spring. What I like is you can order extra meat for your Gyro Salad and tell her how much you want to spend on the extra meat and then the owner piles it on accordingly.

Stop by and see Dawn, the owner’s wife who cooks everything right in front of you and like a typical Greek housewife talks to you while she is cooking (even though her husband is the Greek.) Makes no difference, for twelve years she has delighted Brookline with her excellent food and congenial conversation. They do not have a website so make sure to go in for an updated menu or call and ask Dawn what is cooking as they have adapted the menu to popular demand.

Les Miserables
Set in the early 1800’s Les Misérables is a sweeping masterpiece that has been a record-breaking success worldwide since its London opening in 1985. Les Misérables has been translated into 21 different languages and been performed in front of more than 60 million people in 43 countries. Here in Pittsburgh, opening night was sold out. At dinner before the theatre and on the way out, the recurrent theme was how many times patrons had seen Les Misérables. At dinner before the theatre, I heard two people who were unrelated, one alone and one with her date talk about seeing the musical, 19 and 11 times respectively.

Restaurants East Liberty, South Hills, Downtown

Sal’s City Deli, 245 Seventh St., Pittsburgh, PA 15222 (412) 434-1100  http://www.salscitydeli.com

It’s been a long time coming, a no-nonsense mid-priced restaurant/deli right next to the Bendum Center. Everyone is hungry at theatre time and not everyone has the time or budget for one of the higher end restaurants in the neighborhood, although they are all delightful. If you are ducking in at the last minute for a bite before a show this is a great place and that’s just what we did. Sal’s has a limited wine and beer menu so you can get a drink, also a cappuccino, espresso, dessert and great sandwiches. We tried the Beef on Wick which I had not had since college. Although this particular sandwich would not always be on my heart healthy diet because of the salted bun, with au jus it was absolutely delightful. They even have Gumbo for $7.95 which I am going to try the next time. Everything on the menu as far as a quick sandwich is between $7.95 and $9.95 and they also have some healthy items like a Grilled Vegetarian Wrap and Quinoa Salad. A nice quick stop before the theatre.

Ready to Run PA Center for Women in Politics at Chatham Center
I
enjoyed the day immensely. The information was essential, good, straight conversation on what it takes to run for office. I invite women to start now writing checks to support women in office. Our donations are essential to opening the doors to good women running and winning office.

The speakers were very good, as well. Panel of Erin Molchany, Nancy Patton Mills, Megan Carpenter and Diana Irey Vaughan was exceptional. I loved the session on Conquering the Camera by Chris Jahnke. Thanks Dana Brown for moderating this, and Jann Chirdon as always right on information. Good to see Jeanne Clark there also.

174 Employers have joined STANDING FIRM, representing 240,712 regional employees
Partner violence happens in all kinds of families and relationships. Persons of any class, culture, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, age, and gender can be victims or perpetrators of partner violence (PV). Similarly, partner violence happens in all kinds of workforces - large multi-million dollar organizations and small family-owned businesses alike.

Studies show that at least 1 in 4 women is a victim of partner violence at some point in her life. Therefore, the chance that at least one of your employees is, or has been, a victim of partner violence is high. In fact, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, over half of PV-related homicides of female employees occurred in workplaces with fewer than 20 employees. It is important that small businesses with limited resources take simple steps towards addressing partner violence within their workforce.

The Painting As Object
In The Painting as Object, Florentine-born artist Fabrizio Gerbino explores the nature of paintings as objects in themselves, by presenting a series of meta-paintings that use earlier works almost like objects in a still life, or as the launching point for abstractions.  Gerbino translates these subjects into minimalist shapes using colors mixed only from primaries.

“Witnessing Gerbino’s paintings evolve has been amazing,” says Sonja Sweterlitsch, Curator of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s 709 Penn Gallery.  “When he first moved to Pittsburgh, Gerbino impressed with his mastery of technical skills, with work ranging from realistic cityscapes to meticulously rendered miniature copies of masterworks from his native Italy.  In recent years, his work has ranged from installation art to video, and his painting has become more minimalist in style.  While his work continues to draw inspiration from urban spaces, industrial buildings, and abandoned industrial objects, this new series is very much about the nature of painting,” says Sweterlitsch.
