Martin has a Bachelor degree in music composition/theory from Ohio University. He also studied at L'institute des Etrangers, Tours, France, and in Los Angeles he composed and recorded music that was aired on Cinemax.  He also composed and recorded numerous songs. Some were recorded by other artists in the United States as well as Brazil.  In 1993 he composed music for a children's musical, "Is There a Fairytale for Our Time?" that was performed at the Wheeler Opera House in Aspen, CO.

He traveled as a troubadour throughout the US southwest, Mexico and Central America.   During this time he began making wire wrapped jewelry from rocks and artful pieces he found in his travels.  He was a magician's assistant for two and a half years which took him throughout the US and into Thailand in 2001.

He has also been documenting (video and audio) Pittsburgh jazz legends of the past, present and future; and has composed/recorded music beds for radio/television/web advertising.  Martin has enjoyed being a part of the "DreamMakers Ventures" program of the America's Arts and Music Crossroads Center, learning about himself and teaching jewelry making, video and music.  Most recently he has been working on documentaries regarding singer songwriters and the Kerryville Folk Festival with interviews from Peter Yarrow and the late Rod Kennedy.

Music Director Manfred Honeck Welcomes Violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter to Open 2014-2015 Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Season
September 13, 2014  |  7 PM  |  Heinz Hall
You won’t believe your eyes — or your ears — at “For Your Eyes Only,” the gala opening of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s 2014-2015 season on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in Heinz Hall, featuring Grammy-winning violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter led by Music Director Manfred Honeck.  A sumptuous and mysterious evening that promises a feast for all the senses, the Gala concert features a variety of short, evocative tone poems and opera pieces. Mutter closes the evening with a performance of one of the most popular works for violin, Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor.

The concert is preceded by a cocktail party at the Duquesne Club, followed by a Gala dinner at Heinz Hall and the annual Soirée at the Fairmont Hotel.  The “For Your Eyes Only” Gala is chaired by Steve and Brenda Schlotterbeck — along with Honorary Chairs Dick and Ginny Simmons and the Tillotson Family (Carol Hefren Tillotson; Bob Gallagher & Sharon Tillotson Gallagher; Craig & Jill Tillotson; and Curt Fleming & Kim Tillotson Fleming). The Gala Silent Auction Chairs are David and Mari Jo Scholosser. The gala evening includes a pre-concert cocktail hour at the Duquesne Club, valet parking, premium-level seating for the concert, a silent auction, a post-concert formal dinner catered by the Duquesne Club and a dessert reception with Maestro Honeck.

The “For Your Eyes Only” Soirée includes valet parking, pre-concert cocktail hour, preferred seating for the concert and a post-concert celebration with symphony musicians at the Fairmont, with hors d’oeuvres, an open bar, a silent auction and more surprises. The “For Your Eyes Only” Soiree is chaired by Mike & Angela DeVanney, Michael J. Herald, Nicholas Varischetti and Carrie Wolf, along with Honorary Chair Jensina A. Chutz. The Soiree Silent Auction Chair is Mary McKinney and the Musician Chairs are Susanne Park and John Moore.

For more than 35 years, violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter has sustained a career of exceptional musicianship combined with an unwavering commitment to the future of classical music. Since her international debut at the Lucerne Festival in 1976, Mutter has appeared in all of the major concert halls of Europe, North and South America, and Asia. In addition to performing and recording established masterpieces of the violin repertoire, Mutter, an avid champion of 20th- and 21st-century violin repertoire in both orchestral and chamber music settings, has had works composed for her by Sebastian Currier, Henri Dutilleux, Sofia Gubaidulina, Witold Lutoslawski, Norbert Moret, Krzysztof Penderecki, Sir Andre Previn and Wolfgang Rihm. She recently performed the world premiere of Sebastian Currier's “Ringtone Variations,” a work commissioned by the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation, providing the prelude for an Asian tour with Mutter’s Virtuosi—an ensemble consisting of current and former scholarship students of the ASM Foundation. Mutter was awarded the Atlantic Council's 2012 Distinguished Artistic Leadership Award for her encouragement of young music talent through the ASM Foundation and was inducted as a 2013 Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. The violinist released her debut recording of Dvorak’s violin concerto in November 2013 on the Deutsche Grammophon label with Manfred Honeck leading the Berlin Philharmonic. On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of Mutter’s stage debut, Deutsche Grammophon released a comprehensive box set with all of her DG recordings, extensive documentation and previously unpublished rarities.

Gala packages and soirée tickets can be purchased by contacting Chelsea Cain, manager of events, at 412-392-4830 and cccain@pittsburghsymphony.org. All proceeds from the Gala concert and associated parties support the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s Education and Community Engagement programs.  Tickets, ranging in price from $35 to $150 for the gala concert only, are on sale now and can be purchased through the Heinz Hall box office at 412-392-4900 or pittsburghsymphony.org.

"Empowering Women Entrepreneurs" Senate Hearing
From: E-Magnify  |  August 4, 2014
E-Magnify's Education and Training Manager, Debra Mason, recently attended "Empowering Women Entrepreneurs," a Senate hearing hosted by the Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee
Debra Mason
and held in conjunction with Women Influencing Public Policy’s annual leadership meeting in Washington, D.C.

The Washington Bureau of the Business Journals reports on three things that Congress and the federal government could do to help women business owners:
1)  Enable more women business owners to access  capital."Women business owners have a harder time getting loans than men do. Women own around 30 percent of all small businesses, but they receive only 16 percent of small business loans, according to the committee’s report. In terms of dollars, women's share of business loans is only 4 percent."
2)  Award more federal contracts to women-owned businesses."The federal government has never reached its 20-year-old goal of awarding 5 percent of all its prime contracting dollars to women. Failure to reach this goal has cost women business owners nearly $6 billion in contracts every year."
3)  Increase funding to Women's Business Centers."Around 134,000 women business owners receive business training and counseling every year from the SBA's network of nearly 100 Women's Business Centers, which are operated by and partially funded by nonprofit organizations.
"But this program hasn't been reauthorized since 1999 and needs updating, the committee report concludes. It mostly needs more money -- government funding has remained flat even as the number of centers have grown."

Think Big Forum: Women Who Make and Create
Tuesday, October 14th, 2014  |  4:30 - 8:00 PM  |  Chatham University Shadyside Campus
4:30-6:00PM, Networking & Speaker Reception
6:00-8:00PM, Speaker Forum

Speakers:
Georgena Terry, CEO, Heart of Steel Bicycles
Lani Lazzari, President & CEO, Simple Sugars
Heather Knight, Founder & Chief Roboticist, Marilyn Monrobot

Georgena’s business evolved from a desire to work for herself without the constraints of a traditional corporate lifestyle. She likes to call herself a "seat of the pants" entrepreneur – one who follows her intuition and plays to her strengths while ignoring her weaknesses. Relying on anecdotal and scientific evidence, she created bicycles designed for women. Prior to this, the industry treated all bike riders as "unisex" (which we know means "male"). There were lots of ups and downs as her business evolved, but her passion for designing bicycles has never waned. It continues today in Heart of Steel Bicycles, a nod to her love affair with steel, which originated, no doubt, in Pittsburgh.

You may have seen Lani on "Shark Tank!"  Her Simple Sugars’ story is about identifying a personal need that grew out of frustration with the options available to her, having the initiative to want to find something better and then the determination to make it happen! It’s not rocket science, it’s about finding an unmet need and then creating an awesome and unique product to fill it (emphasis on unique). But it takes way more than passion, it takes incredibly hard work and lots and lots of sacrifice and determination to make it successful. Find out why a big growth spurt is only the beginning for the founder of Simple Sugars!

Assisted by her pint-sized robot comedian, Heather will describe social robotics, how we make snap decisions about the capabilities and intent of machine, and how robot designers can influence these impressions via motion. From call centers to mobile robots, we have emotional reactions to technology and apply social conventions to machines. In designing robots, Heather wants to influence these attributions, because that enables or limits the effectiveness and acceptance of these machines in human environments. By adapting strategies from physical theater, Heather researches how robots can communicate via motion, identifying features that non-anthropomorphic robots can use to interact with us successfully and appropriately.

Reduce Waste. Save Lives. Join Global Links Suture Donation Program.
Written  By:  Jennifer Novelli  |  August 7, 2014
Surplus sutures. Every hospital has them. Maybe they were pulled for a procedure that was cancelled. Maybe the surgeon prefers a different needle, and boxes of absorbable gut on a cutter aren’t being used.

Those surplus sutures can save lives all over the world – Africa, Asia, South America – if they are donated to Global Links. Our suture donation program has, since 1989, been recovering sterile, current-dated sutures from hospitals around the country and providing them to hospitals in resource-poor communities worldwide that desperately need them.

Saanvi, fully recovered, with Dr. Shirish Pargaankar,
her family and members of the ICU team who helped in her care.
Every donation makes a difference for someone – such as Saanvi, who came to Miraj Heart Institute in India at age 5 with a congenital hole in her heart. Her uncle had had a successful cardiac repair at Miraj, and convinced Saanvi’s parents, who are both hearing impaired, to bring their daughter to Miraj.

Sutures donated by Global Links were essential in defraying the very high costs of Saanvi’s procedure. “Cardiac suture is a very important and fairly costly ingredient of the operation,” writes Dr. Shirish Pargaonkar, chief of cardio-vascular and thoracic surgery and the head of Miraj Heart Institute. “Our average cost of suture per open heart surgery varies from $250 to $500 depending on the type of surgery. However these continued donations of valuable sutures from Global Links help to keep our operative costs low.”

Global Links has been providing select cardiac sutures to Miraj since 2007. “The humanitarian efforts of Global Links and their staff have made it possible for us to subsidize our costs still further and offer our services to many more patients,” writes Dr. Pargaonkar. “Our small effort in Miraj largely depends on the prayers, equipment and financial support that we receive through friends and well-wishers like your good self. We once again thank Global Links for their continued help and support which empowers us to carry out this service.”

Your hospital can support this effort by sending current-dated sutures to Global Links. Reduce waste, clear some shelf space, and save lives. Win. Win. Win.

a New Young Adult Novel, Released by Lodestone Books in July

REVIEW & MEDIA COPIES, INTERVIEWS & PHOTOS AVAILABLE ON REQUEST
When her little brother died, Emerson's life came crashing down around her.
Though her friends want to help, can Emerson fight to re-enter the world she abandoned?
(Pittsburgh, August 5, 2014)   Pittsburgh-based author K.A. Coleman will sign her her new novel HOLDING ON AND LETTING GO, a July 2014 release from UK publisher John Hunt’s Lodestone Books, at a BOOK LAUNCH, Wed., Aug. 13, 7-8:30 pm, The Beauty Shoppe co-working center, 6001 Penn Ave., First Floor, Pittsburgh 15206. (Enter at N. Sheridan Ave.). The event is open to the public.
For young adults—and the adults who care about them—HOLDING ON LETTING GO provides a window to the fears and realities of life as a teen and college-age person.
The loss of a sibling seems unfathomable at any age, but when teens lose a younger sibling, the experience can be life-changing. Coleman’s heroine is Emerson Caulfield, a bright and sensitive 16-year-old who is navigating her return to school and her hometown following the death of her younger brother. The story explores Emerson’s emotions, relationships, and grief in her own voice as well as those who are closest to her.
“In creating characters,” says Coleman, “a writer has the responsibility of making characters as relatable as possible. All books act as an escape. In order to really show the profound change in Emerson, the reader needs to see Emerson as others see her.  The best way to achieve that was alternating perspectives in the novel.”
BOOK LAUNCH AND SIGNING DETAILS
Books will be on sale at the event. The author will discuss her book and sign guests pre-purchased copies as well.
As HOLDING ON AND LETTING GO celebrates siblings, Ms. Coleman invites guests to provide a photo with their brothers and/or sisters and she will create a piece of art featuring the "sibling selfies". Send photos to KAColemanAuthor@gmail.com.
Refreshments will be served.

CULTURAL CLUES

Tamara at Quantum Theater

TAMARA is set in 1927 Italy, at the grand home of poet Gabriele d'Annunzio. He is awaiting the arrival of the Polish art deco artist Tamara de Lempicka, who is to paint his portrait. The audience arrives, is given a glass of champagne, and then meets all ten characters (either guests or servants in the home). The audience can then choose which character they'd like to follow from scene-to-scene all over the building (Rodef Shalom Congregation). The location, Rodef Shalom Congregation on Fifth Ave, has been transformed
into 1920s Italy, stocked full with antiques and items from the era borrowed from antique dealers all over the city!

After Act 1, the audience is lead to the terrace for a wonderful Intermezzo dinner catered each week by a different chef (E2, Above & Beyond Catering, Open Bottle Bistro, Bob Sendall All in Good Taste Productions, CASBAH, Stagioni). And then they are off again for Act 2!

It will be a full evening of theater, dinner, and drinks. What's not to love? Full press release is attached.

1:00 at the Keane Theatre, St. Barnabas- Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful. Miss Representation includes stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists, and academics. A MUST SEE!!! -

BUSINESS BUZZ

From: PITTSBURGH TODAY

Economy / Employment and Unemployment
The Pittsburgh Metro Area's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 5.3 percent in June 2014 -- down .2 percent from May 2014 and 1.5 percentage points lower than the June 2013 rate. Pittsburgh's jobless rate was lower than the benchmark average and Pittsburgh had the fifth lowest unemployment rate of all benchmark peers.

This data comes from the U.S. Department of Labor's Local Area Unemployment Statistics (LAUS) program.

Data source(s):

MSAThese figures are for U.S. Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA).
Current month data are preliminary. All data are seasonally adjusted figures.
The unemployment rate measures the share of workers in the labor force who do not currently have a job but have actively looked for work in the past four weeks. Receiving benefits from the Unemployment Insurance program has no bearing on whether a person is classified as unemployed. It is important to keep in mind that the rate measures the percent of unemployed job seekers in the labor force—the sum of employed and unemployed persons—and not the entire population.

PITTSBURGH HISTORICAL STUFF

100% of Your Gift Funds Preservation Work

I really appreciate the work PHLF does to maintain historical buildings in our city. These projects touch so many lives and make our city a much better place.
––Everett Ramer, Pittsburgh Mennonite Church, January 27, 2014

One of the most direct ways that PHLF helps maintain architectural landmarks throughout Allegheny County is by continuing its Historic Religious Properties (HRP) program, supported each year by generous donations from its members and friends.

"We improve the quality of life for people as we help renew the institutions they value," said David Vater, Chair of PHLF's HRP Committee. Since 1997, PHLF has awarded 247 matching grants totaling more than one million dollars to help restore key historic religious properties in Allegheny County and, in the process, has created community pride and encouraged renewal.

"The contributions we receive in support of our HRP program, now through December 31, will make it possible for us to offer another cycle of matching grants and technical assistance in 2015," said HRP Committee Vice-Chair Kathy Testoni. "Since PHLF underwrites the staff and operating costs of the HRP program, 100% of each donation is awarded in the form of matching grants to directly fund restoration work."

We are currently seeking loving people willing to open their hearts and homes to high school foreign exchange students.
Host families provide the students with room and board. The students require their own beds, but a student may share a bedroom with a sibling of the same gender. Volunteer host families provide the students with meals, but the students have their own insurance and spending money for all other expenses such as school lunches, going out with friends, sports and school supplies, travel, etc. GESS does not discriminate, and we encourage all people to apply. We have had great success with traditional and non-traditional family units including retired couples, young couples, domestic partners, singles, multi-generational families, etc. All of our students can speak English and have gone through an extensive application/in-home interview process as well as an orientation in their home country. Host Families and students are supported by GESS through Local Coordinators during the exchange.
We depend of the love and kindness of volunteers like you to provide our students with good, loving homes.

ROVING PITTSBURGHER REPORT

Family Night at the Symphony is a Home Run
Review of Triple Play the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's Aug. 2nd 2014 Performance

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra closed their 2014 summer season on Saturday, August 2nd, with a concert entitled Triple Play.  For a baseball loving family, we thought the concert was a home run.  With my partner’s children visiting for the summer, this was a great concert to take the whole family to.  It featured opera and operetta overtures in the first third, a stunningly played piano concerto in the second, and for the final third movie music from some of our favorite action blockbusters.  Now I normally report mostly on the music and just a little on the experience, but for this review I will share how fun it can be to take the whole family to the symphony.

We have only been here for a year, so this was the first opportunity to bring the kids to Heinz Hall and it was so fun to see their reaction walking into the beautiful hall.  They were in aw just as we were the first time.  But the most quote of the evening came as we were getting seated.  We had two sets of seats: two media seats fifth row/stage left, and four towards the back/center section/isle seats - still main floor mind you.  First, we got Dad (Mike VanStipdonk), Martin (15), Josie (13), and Quinn (10) seated and then Nina (7) and I proceeded to find our seats.  After we at least located them I asked Nina if she wanted to go back and hang out with the rest of the family until the concert started.  She replied, “No I don’t think I want to go way back there.  These seats are WAY better.”  And with that we now have a seven year old, prime seating connoisseur.  Instead we practiced reading the concert notes, which proved to be very good concert preparation even for her.

With a countdown of the side stage doors closing one by one, we were tuning up for our first family PSO experience.  As a result of her pre-concert reading, Nina was able to point out the evil dwarf played by the basses in Glinka’s Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla.  Next was one of my favorites of the evening, Franz Von Suppe’s Overture to The Beautiful Galatea.  Nina thought she might have been familiar with the third piece, Intermezzo and Barcarolle from The Tales of Hoffmann.  But at its conclusion, said “Maybe I know one of his other songs, because I did not know that one after all.”  To close out the first section of the concert, the PSO played Rossini’s Overture to William Tell.  Guest conductor Christian Capocaccia playfully reminded us that we should also recognize it from many cartoons, like Looney Tunes.  During this piece Nina nudged me and perceptively pointed to the words thunderstorm, countryside, and triumphant return during each of the respective sections.  During the first intermission we met up with the rest of the troops for a leg stretch and work out the wiggles walk.  Quinn noted that he heard lots of cymbals during the Bugs Bunny song.

Small Business Resource Fair in the West End
Held at the Pittsburgh Musical Theater in the West End.  The theater is doing a great job at the renovations in profress on the former elementary school.  The event was sponsored by the URA, KivaZip, Mayor Bill Peduto's Office and City Council Woman Teresa Kale Smith.  Nice turn out of entrepreneurs and small business owners of all sizes.

Jersey Boys, at the Galleria
"Oh What a Night" and what a great theater.  Amazing leg room and if the show had not been so outstanding the movie seats are comfortable enough for a double feature where you could fall asleep quite easily for the second feature.  Worth the trip, no matter your neighborhood.

Red Robin in South Hills Village
Gotta try the homemade chips and turkey burgers.
