Roving Pittsburgher Report

Something Big presented by Visionary Academy of Performing Arts
Visionary Academy Dance classes are created and run to teach students that they are beautiful from the inside out and it shows. The Real Deal Pastor Brady Hill was a slap stick, hilarious Master of Ceremonies. He is Pastor of The Whole Truth Ministry and you could see why. In this monologues he did not hold back on the hysterical “truths” that make people laugh and think.

The songs were very non-denominational Christian and inspirational tunes and the dancers were nothing short of heavenly. Well I am a little prejudiced because my granddaughter Anaiyah was one of the Saturday Teeny Boppers who danced to On Top of the World and Victory Chant. This group was probably 5 and 6 year olds but what poise for young girls. The Show Stopper was Almost There by the Tuesday Teeny Boppers, complete with pink and white checkered outfits, tiny hats and white gloves and a Yellow Cab for a prop. This was no ordinary kids dance review, even the props and minimal scenery was first class. The most inspirational piece of all I think was the Pre-Teen Group in There’s Hope. If you can get a chance next year, don’t take a chance just put it on your calendar. I found myself cheering loudly along with the other proud grandparents and parents and relatives even for the dancers I did not know. I am so happy to have been invited.

Kenny G at the Pittsburgh Symphony
JoAnn Forrester, the Empress of Biz says...

I enjoyed the concert for many reasons…not only for the music…but for the easy interaction that Kenny G has with the audience and the musicians. This man is not only gifted with musical talent, he is technically brilliant and has the ability to hold notes longer than anyone . In fact he has set the world record for the longest notes held…45 minutes! Read the full review here.
Pittsburgh Local Sports

Pittsburgh Passion leaves an impressive imprint on sports history for 2013
The Pittsburgh Passion first made history by playing the first game ever at the new Highmark Stadium in Station Square. On April 6th, 2013, Rookie Fullback Candice Snyder made Highmark Stadium history making the very first touchdown and Passion Quarterback, Lisa Horton threw her 100th regular season touchdown of her career against the DC Divas in their opening game.

The Passion’s defense had their first shut-out, of 4 total for the season, on April 20th against the Toledo Reign and their special teams added one blocked punt and several amazing kick returns to lead the Passion to victory.

The Passion had their second shut-out in a row, on April 27th against the Columbus Comets, becoming the first sports team to win at Highmark Stadium. Wide Receiver, Rachel Wojdowksi started off her remarkable season breaking her 1000th career receiving yard mark early in the first quarter of that game and Passion Kicker, Amy Fallon was 7 for 7 on extra points. The Passion defense greatly attributed to the game as Linebacker, Tia Montgomery had an interception for an 83 yard touchdown return and Passion Rookie, Linebacker, Amanda Duncan, had a 39 yard fumble recovery in for a Passion touchdown. The Passion defense finished with two fumble recoveries and three interceptions against the Comets. Read the entire release here

Lou Trivino
Athletics select SRU's Lou Trivino in 11th round
The Oakland Athletics on Saturday made Slippery Rock University junior pitcher Lou Trivino their 11th-round pick in the 2013 amateur baseball draft.

Trivino, the 341st player selected in this year’s draft, was the first Rock baseball player drafted since catcher-first baseman Matt Adams was selected in the 23rd round (699th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2009 draft.

Adams is currently a member of the Cardinals’ Major League Baseball team.

Trivino was the second Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference player selected in this year’s draft, behind only Mansfield University pitcher Nick Keener, the 10th-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

A native of Green Lane, Pa., and graduate of Upper Bucks Christian High School, Trivino has one collegiate season of eligibility remaining, but is expected to sign a professional contract in the next few days. Read the entire release here.

Cultural Clues
Soul Factory: Motown at the Museum!
This Friday, June 21st, one of the best parties in town will erupt on the longest night of the year. The summer solstice seems the perfect night for the Mattress Factory museum of contemporary art to host its singular Urban Garden Party.

For its latest installment, the Garden Party provides a hint of the museum's fall 2013 exhibition--Detroit: Artists in Residence--with a benefit bash that takes a cue from the legendary groove, glamour and creative vision of soulful Detroit. Garden-goers will travel back to when outfits were flashier, hairstyles were funkier and 45 rpm was the only speed in town. Dubbed Soul Factory: Motown at the Museum, this year's benefit bash also marks the museum's 35th year.

Arrive early and with an appetite to sample the spread, which will feature 40 of Pittsburgh’s top restaurants and caterers, including All in Good Taste Productions, Bar Marco, E2, Fukuda, Legume, Marty's Market, PGH Taco Truck, Tender, Verde, Wigle Whiskey, and more.

In between noshing, explore interactive art, bid on one-of-a-kind works made from hubcaps and enjoy Motown-themed pop-up performances by Kierra Darshell's Divas of Drag, DJ Zimmie, El Monics, The MadHouse, and Zany Umbrella Circus. Don your grooviest 1960s-era threads and head into the Motown photo booth to create a keepsake. Helping to get your groove on will be headlining act, Vancouver-based DJ The Gaff, who brings his psychedelic soul show to the Northside for just one night.

For the first time in Garden Party history, the Mattress Factory is hosting an official after-party. Following the funk fest, head over to nearby Penn Brewery Make sure to bring your wristband for access to drink discounts.

Just 36 hours later, on Sun., June 23rd, head back to the museum for its annual Community Urban Garden Party, from 1 to 5 p.m. Turn old vinyl record albums into art with Assemble, create work to add to the Museum's upcoming MoTOWN art installation and construct musical instruments from recycled materials for a noise party! On the main stage, enjoy performances by Pittsburgh Heat Hip-Hop Dance Company, theater workshops and performances by The Zany Umbrella Circus, and music by DJ Andrew Edmonds' Vinyl Showcase.

From Our Friends at Pittsburgh Today
Last week more than 1,000 arts and community leaders convened in Pittsburgh for the 2013 Americans for the Arts Annual Convention. Pittsburgh is a fitting host for this conference; over the last several decades, Pittsburgh has met a challenge faced by many other regions: growing an arts audience in a slow-growth city with an aging population. In advance of the Americans for the Arts Conference, PittsburghTODAY is releasing a report titled, The Arts Engine, exploring how Pittsburgh's arts initiatives have created a national community development model.

The entire report, including five sub-stories about specific components of the region's arts scene, can be found on our website by clicking here.

Help save VOCA: The Victims of Crime Act
We need your help to lobby Congress to exempt VOCA, the Victims of Crime Act, from federal sequestration. VOCA is a non-taxpayer fund that does not contribute to the national debt.
It is estimated that cuts to VOCA will result in 785,000 victims, annually, not being able to receive the services that they need. This includes victims of domestic violence.
WC&S depends on VOCA support to help us provide our clients with quality services.

We need YOU to call your U.S. Representative! What to say? Use this simple message..

"I urge you to sign on as a co-sponsor of HR 2238, the bill recently introduced by Representatives Tim Costa and Ted Poe--co-chairs of Congress' Victims' Rights Caucus--to exempt the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) from federal sequestration!" click here for a complete sample letter

2013 George W. Tippins Regional Business Plan CompetitionAfter several rounds of pitching business ideas to a variety of volunteer judges, the 28 competitors in this year event narrowed down to the top three (3) finalists in two divisions:

The Up-Start Division ---for young people in the early stage of developing and forming their business concept (generally in our introduction level program). Products and services are in “prototype” development, relying greatly upon preliminary feedback from potential consumers regarding quality, value and pricing.

The Start-Up Division—for young owners who have actually started their enterprise and have a year or more of direct experience with consumer sales, revenue generation and management.

The three finalists presented their business plans and pitched judges in their respective division’s final round on June 6, 2013 at the Rivers Club

The outcome is as follows:

Up-Start Division
First place finalist: Derica Sanchez, Founder of DERI
The business creates custom designed dog collars. Derica is part of Entrepreneuring Youth’s program at Urban Pathways Charter School where she is completing 10th grade.

Start Up Division
Megan Boboige
First place finalist is Megan Boboige, Founder of Meg’s Photo Booth
The business sells Meg’s photographs printed in high resolution on canvas. Meg is part of Entrepreneuring Youth’s program in Beaver County delivered through a partnership with the Franklin Center and the Community College of Beaver County.
