VIOLINIST ANNE AKIKO MEYERS MAKES PSO DEBUT

Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers makes her debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) when she performs the world premiere of Mason Bates’ Violin Concerto in a weekend of BNY Mellon Grand Classics concerts next month.

Principal Guest Conductor Leonard Slatkin returns to Heinz Hall to lead the PSO in the two concerts that also will feature Haydn’s charming Symphony No. 68 and Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3 (“Organ Symphony”).

The concerts will begin at 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7 and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9. Tickets, ranging from $20 to $93, can be purchased by calling the Heinz Hall box office at 412.392.4900, or by visiting the PSO online at www.pittsburghsymphony.org. Read the entire relase here.

JOINS PSO FOR SPECIAL CONCERT AT HEINZ HALL

Olivia Newton-John, star of the hit movie Grease, multiple Grammy Award-winner, and one of the world’s most popular entertainer for decades, will perform many of her hit songs in a special concert with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra at Heinz Hall.

With a career spanning more than four decades Olivia Newton-John remains a vibrant and creative actress, author, singer, philanthropist and humanitarian who is adored by fans across the world. Born in Cambridge, England, in 1948, she moved to Melbourne, Australia with her family when she was five. By 15, she had formed an all-girl group called Sol Four. Later that year, she won a talent contest on the popular TV show, Sing Sing Sing, which earned her a trip to London. By 1963, she was appearing on local daytime TV shows and weekly pop music programs in Australia. She cut her first single for Decca Records in 1966, a version of Jackie DeShannon’s Till You Say You’ll Be Mine. In 1971, she recorded a cover of Bob Dylan’s If Not For You, co-produced by John Farrar, who she continues to collaborate with today.

PSO TRIBUTE TO MARVIN HAMLISCH
Tony Award-winning performer and Broadway star Idina Menzel will lead a cast of stars who will join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO) at Heinz Hall in January for a special concert paying tribute to the PSO’s world-renowned and beloved Principal Pops Conductor, the late Marvin Hamlisch.

The special concert, One Singular Sensation, will be at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29. Tickets, ranging from $35 to $150, go on sale at 9 a.m., Monday, Dec. 3 to PSO subscribers. The general public can buy tickets starting at 9 a.m., Monday, Dec. 17. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Heinz Hall box office at 412.392.4900, or visiting www.pittsburghsymphony.org. Net proceeds from the concert will benefit the Marvin Hamlisch Pops Artistic Excellence Fund.

The tribute concert will feature Hamlisch’s works, including such hits as What I Did For Love, The Way We Were, They’re Playing Our Song, At the Ballet and many more. Joining Menzel and the PSO on stage will be Maria Friedman, Lucie Arnaz, Robert Klein and Kevin Cole, among others. The PSO will be led by acclaimed conductor J. Ernest Green.

Don’t go to Frankie’s in the winter when the doors are closed and there’s a line and tell your boss you were stuck in traffic because if he is a Pittsburgh hot dog aficionado, he will know you have been to Frankie’s. The delicious aroma of vats full of green peppers and onions in hot sausage will cling to you. All the sandwiches are $3.95 and you won’t find a menu on their website, because they don’t have one. It’s just a hot dog joint with a neighborhood bar adjoining and a little run down sitting area in the back. They have kielbasa and hot sausage sandwiches and wonderful hot dogs. While I don’t do raw onions, I love to get the onion and green pepper fixings from the hot sausage put on my hot dog with some mustard and their homemade chili.  Quick lunch, quick hunger fix, don’t stay long and the boss won’t know why you are late.

Poinsettias & Pointe Shoes, Friday, November 30, 2012, was designed by the Pittsburgh Ballet and Phipps Conservatory to both delight and warm the hearts of visitors. Both organizations outdid themselves. There was stuff for the whole family.  A preview of the ballet left no doubt that attendees would continue their tradition of attending the Nutcracker. Also the combination of the ballet show and being able to wonder the rooms of the Botanical Gardens show just made perfect sense. The magic of a traditional ballet and the 1893 glasshouse enveloped visitors in a Christmas wonderland. Read the full review here.

Celtic Woman A Christmas Celebration--the Symphony Tour was simply amazing. The concert was incredible. The presentation from the lighting to the sound to the instrumentation was flawless. This was beyond what I had hoped to experience. The concert, as expected, was a collection of popular Christmas carols; but even though I had heard those thousands of times before, the angelic voices of Chloe, Lisa and Susan, accompanied by the sheer talent of Mairead breathed a new life in each song, and gave it a complete new dimension.
