The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Remembers Former Director Lorin Maazel
The entire Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra organization was saddened to learn of the passing Maestro Lorin Maazel, who served as the orchestra’s music director from 1984 to 1996. Maazel, age 84, died on July 13, 2014 in Virginia from complications following pneumonia.

Maazel was a world-renowned conductor, as well as a composer, mentor, father and husband, who devoted more than 75 years of his life to music-making. He took the baton of the Pittsburgh Symphony during a critical time in its history, following the departure of Andre Previn. The symphony developed an unrivaled international following under his leadership, gathering future stature as he led tours of Europe, Asia and the Americas, added first-rank players to vital positions and programmed season-long retrospectives that appealed to audiences and critics alike.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Maestro Lorin Maazel. There can be no doubt that he had a significant impact on the musical life of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the music world as a whole. I, myself, played many times under his baton and was struck by his prodigious talent and quest for perfection,” said Manfred Honeck, current music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony. “He left behind a core of musical leaders that still define the Pittsburgh Symphony today and an incredible standard of playing. As one of his successors, I am deeply indebted to him for creating the ideal culture of musicians and the music-making exemplified in this orchestra. All of us at the Pittsburgh Symphony and our audiences, both here and around the world, continue to benefit from the work he did in Pittsburgh. I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family and his many friends and fans. We have truly lost one of the world’s greatest conductors.”

Born in Paris in 1930, Maazel began violin lessons at age five, and conducting lessons at age seven. He and his family moved to Pittsburgh so that he could study conducting with Vladimir Bakaleinikoff, who had become associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1939. Between ages nine and 15, he conducted most of the major American orchestras, including the NBC Symphony at the invitation of Arturo Toscanini. In the course of his decades-long career, Maazel conducted more than 150 orchestras in no fewer than 5,000 opera and concert performances. He made more than 300 recordings, including symphonic cycles of complete orchestral works by Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Mahler, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Richard Strauss, winning 10 Grands Prix du Disques.

During his career, Maazel served as artistic director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and general manager of the Vienna State Opera, as music director of the Radio Symphony of Berlin, the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic, with whom he made an unprecedented visit to North Korea in 2008. He also was a highly regarded composer, with a wide-ranging catalog of works written primarily over the last 15 years.

“The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra joins the international music community in mourning the passing of a Pittsburgh native who began his music career as a child prodigy and grew to become the most prolific conductor of perhaps all time. He conducted some 150 orchestras during his lifetime and we, in Pittsburgh, benefited from and deeply respected his time with us as music director. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Maazel family,” said James Wilkinson, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Pittsburgh Blues Festival Offers 20th Year of Great Blues and Feeding the Hungry
July 19 - 21 2014  |  Hartwood Acres - Hampton, PA
In a radio interview with WDVE 102.5 FM’s Sean McDowell this afternoon, the line-up for the 19th Annual Pittsburgh Blues Festival, presented by Peoples Natural Gas, was announced by Ron “Moondog” Esser, who chairs the Blues Festival Committee. The Pittsburgh Blues Festival will open on Friday, July 19, 2013 at its current home at Hartwood Acres (Hampton, PA) with the Slide Brothers, and close on Sunday night, July 21 with Tab Benoit. In between, a host of local and national acts will fill two stages. All proceeds from the Blues Festival benefitGreater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

“We always try to include some classic blues bands and some new people, and different blues styles, and we certainly have done that this year,” said Esser. “There’s Louisiana bayou and New Orleans funk, Texicana roots, R&B and steel slide: something for everybody.”   Friday’s admission is FREE with a bag of nonperishable groceries to donate to the Food Bank. The Slide Brothers are four of the best slide guitarists living today, a “dynamic, house-rocking blend of blues, gospel, rock and soul that respects faith and funk.” Friday gets even funkier with Big Sam’s Funky Nation, “a walking, talking, funking class in the history and myriad styles of funk…that most grooving and gritty stepchild of blues, soul and classic R & B.”

Saturday is a full day of music that starts with Gina Sicilia, the 2008 “Best New Artist” at the International Blues Challenge, with a throaty “dark-honey” powerful voice. Next is Eric Lindell, a Festival favorite who has brought his soulful New Orleans “roots” blues to the Festival before. Later on, Joe Louis Walker will take the stage. A consummate bluesman, Joe Louis Walker has been around long enough to have played with Mike Bloomfield. His gritty heavy blues-rock sound has critics calling him a “legendary blues icon.”
Saturday night’s headliner is Los Lonely Boys, currently enjoying a resurgence of popularity with their critically-acclaimed new release Rockpango. “Like previous releases, the band jumps from Latin-tinged funk to bluesy, Stevie Ray Vaughan styled guitar blowouts to sweet, acoustic melodies, while the brothers’ charismatic harmonies remain a constant selling-point throughout.”

And Sunday features J. D. McPherson, The Nighthawks with Billy Price, and Tab Benoit. McPherson is new on the blues scene, having just released his first CD in 2010, and is known for mixing and matching blues styles with a sound all his own. The Nighthawks are from the other end of the age spectrum, a quartet with decades of success still going strong with some original and some new members. Mark Stutso, a well-known Pittsburgh musician in the Norman Nardini/Glenn Pavone circle, is the latest addition to the Nighthawks. With Billy Price at the front of the stage, this act is sure to remind the audience that Pittsburgh has produced an amazing number of great musicians.

The musical menu will also be filled out by an additional six or seven local bands. Pittsburgh Blues Festival is an all-weekend music extravaganza, a family-friendly green event with food, merchandise, a kids’ activity tent, zero-waste recycling, and best of all it embraces a great cause. Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank helps provide food for more than 120,000 children, seniors and working families every month.

Admission to Saturday and Sunday of the Blues Festival is $35 each day; discount advance tickets and weekend passes can be purchased atwww.pghblues.com, or by calling the Blues Hotline at 412-460-BLUE. Children under 12 enter free, and parking at Hartwood Acres is free as well. Over 18 years, the Blues Festival has raised more than $1.5 million to help the Food Bank fight hunger in our region.

KIDZ KORNER

Activities For All Ages at the History Center
Discovery Place, a hands-on laboratory, covers more than 250 years of Pittsburgh history and culture.

Located on the History Center's third floor, above the Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation exhibition, Discovery Place uses hands-on experiences to depict the lives of Western Pennsylvanian children over the past 200 years. The kids-centered area also includes "Get to the Point," an interactive trivia game focused on Pittsburgh innovations.

Kidsburgh, a two-story play place in the museum's first floor Great Hall, immerses the history fans of tomorrow in fun, interactive Pittsburgh-themed activities.

Alongside an interactive model of Pittsburgh, kids can design their own city using models of buildings, boats, and sports stadiums, serve up Isaly's "ice cream," and milk a mooing "cow" at Reymer's Old-Fashioned Deli. Then zoom down the Liberty Tube, a 12-foot spiral slide that kids love.

The Pittsburgh's Lost Steamboat: Treasures of the Arabia exhibition begins with an introduction to steamboat building in Western Pennsylvania. At each of five stations, children can learn how to build a steamboat including the hull, boiler, and the engine, from the paddlewheel to the deck and pilothouse. Finish the boat by giving it a name!

Then kids can try their hand at navigating the western waters with the Steamboats West board game. Can you steer your steamboat from St. Louis to Council Bluffs, Iowa safely? Spin the wheel to find out.

And don't forget to snap a photo with the Steamboat Arabia mule. Use #ArabiaMule in your tweet or Instagram photo so everyone can see it.

Patient Navigation: Why It's Important
From Addagio Health
Numbers have recently been escalating in the arena of "lost to follow-up" - when a client does not respond to a healthcare provider such as Adagio Health "following up" after being identified as having an abnormality in their Pap test or breast exam.

In 2013, Adagio Health was awarded a grant from the National Susan G. Komen Foundation. Money provided by the grant allows Adagio Health to target vulnerable populations in the state of Pennsylvania. Adagio Health was only one of six organizations in the country to receive it. Funded to the Alliance of PA Councils, it is administered by Adagio Health.

This two-year grant, supported by the PA Department of Health, “will help Adagio Health venture into the future of cancer care,” says Lou Ann Jeremko, Adagio Health’s director of statewide cancer programs for Adagio Health. The grant is for clients involved in Komen programming and the PA Department of Health (PADOH) HealthyWoman program.

Cathy Pate, the Statewide Patient Navigator, was hired March 2014 to be the person fully dedicated to helping clients and the process of following up with abnormal test results. As the liaison between client and healthcare provider, it is Cathy’s job to help patients break down barriers that are preventing them from receiving treatment and get them the resources they need. This could include consulting with patients, their family members, providers, the county office and even pharmacies.

Film Screening: The Rise and Fall of Penn Station
Tuesday, July 22 2014  |  6 - 8 PM
In 1910, the Pennsylvania Railroad successfully accomplished the enormous engineering feat of building tunnels under New York City's Hudson and East rivers, connecting the railroad to New York and New England, knitting together the entire eastern half of the United States. The tunnels terminated in what was one of the greatest architectural achievements of its time, Pennsylvania Station. Penn Station covered nearly eight acres, extended two city blocks, and housed one of the largest public spaces in the world.

But just 53 years after the station’s opening, the monumental building that heralded and represented the American Empire was slated to be destroyed. The destruction of this important landmark was one of the defining moments in American history that gave birth to the modern preservation movement in America. Join us for a screening of this documentary for a comprehensive look back at this defining moment in historic preservation.

ROVING PITTSBURGHER REPORT

Luke Wholey's Wild Alaskan Grille
You have to try out their new frozen fruit drinks and also the Wild Caught Mussels in Marinara.  What a treat!  We had guests from Mumbai, India and they loved it also.

Double Wide Grille, Southside
Frozen mohitos with loads of fresh mint.  What an afternoon with old friends.  Also one of our guests tried, "The Marriage Counselor" with pineapple juice, cucumber rind, basil and gin.  She found it delightful.  Loads of choices on the menu from vegetarian, which we had to "diner fair" like wings and burgers.  The huge menu is overpowering.  We literally gourged ourselves on seitan wings, coconut tofu, sesame and peanut tofu and a huge California salad with avocoado and sprouts and just about every fruit and vegetable in season.  AND they have for real cornbread.

Downtown Gallery Crawl and Cosmopolitan Pittsburgh
Downtown was awash with people for the free gallery crowd and iside the August Wilson Center, the VIP Cosmopolitan Party and post VIP dance party was sold out.  What a night.

Debbie Constantin Golf Instruction - Men, Women, Juniors; Private and Group; Golf Fitness, Ladies Golf Leagues, Disability Golf

On Course Management. Playing from different tee boxes will help work on different parts of your game. Some days, play from the forward tees - it helps you work on the short game. On other days, play from the back tees to help work on your longer clubs. Playing from a combination of different tees will help you see the course from a different perspective. If you are always playing the same course from the same tees, it can be b-o-r-i-n-g!! Challenge yourself!!

Women in Leadership Host Project Opening to Collect Innovative Voices and Experiences
All Coro participants engage in some form of project-based learning.  The Women in Leadership XVII cohort is learning by engaging in a group project to create an innovative account of the voices and experiences of women in Southwest PA.  On June 5, 2014, the cohort hosted a “Project Opening” at Rodef Shalom in Shadyside. A  Project Opening is a Coro learning tool designed to generate lots of feedback on an early-stage project idea and build collaboration to support it. Over 100 people attended the event.

Women in Leadership describe the purpose of their project in this way:
The purpose of the project is to create a new source of history in southwestern Pennsylvania –an oral history—a history that records the voices and the experiences of women in our region.
The cohort pre-selected themes that bring focus to the project and raise awareness of the experiences of women in the region.  These themes include:

  • Race, Ethnicity, & Nationality
  • (Dis)Ability
  • Class or Socioeconomic Status
  • Electoral and Governmental Politics
  • Anti-violence
  • Gender at work and home
  • Gender, Sex & Sexuality
  • Youth Empowerment

Through a collection voices of women from varying backgrounds the Women in Leadership cohort will create an informative tool that is transferrable to education institutions all throughout the Southwest PA region to raise awareness to improve the status of women.

The Women in Leadership cohort expect to debut their collection of voices in late Fall.  For more information, e-mail a Women in Leadership participant via the contact information on the flyer below.

Controller Wagner Announces Success in Saving "Green," Improving the Environment
Chelsea Wagner
When Wagner was elected as Controller, she promised to increase efficiency and transparency in County government while saving money and increasing revenue. She recently announced that she's made strides toward those goals while also being environmentally responsible. By recycling scrap metal and paper, and by initiating paperless invoicing processes as mentioned above, the Controller's Office has increased scrap metal recycling revenue by 220%, saved more than 4,000 pounds of paper and is anticipated to save the County more than $15,000 in paper, postage and ink. Additionally, her efforts have also helped save the environment by preventing the use of 35 trees, 259 gallons of oil, 7 cubic yards of landfill, 8,214 kilowatts of energy and 14,375 gallons of water.

"I'm very proud of our hard work and successful efforts to turn trash into cash and help County government operate more efficiently and ecologically. There is more work to be done, but we are on the right track toward protecting Allegheny County's taxpayers and bringing County government up to date with modern technology and make it more transparent and service-oriented," Wagner said.

5 Completely Selfish (But Still Good) Reasons to Buy Local
From: The Business Journals  Retweeted by:  Joanne Quinn-Smith
Written By: James Ritchie  |  July 07, 2014
Photo Courtesy: Getty Images (altrendo images)
You know that shopping locally is good for your community: It keeps dollars in the area economy and contributes to a vibrant business scene.

But you don’t have to be an altruist to see the value in spending close to home. For small-business owners, there are also plenty of selfish reasons to do business with people you know — or can get to know.

“If you are spreading your money around with local B2B suppliers, especially in the weak economy we are experiencing, your vendors have a vested interest in the prosperity of your business,” said Joanne Quinn Smith, owner of Pittsburgh-based Dreamweaver Marketing Associates.

Of course, a thriving small-business sector ultimately helps everyone. Such organizations make up nearly 98 percent of all U.S. employers and they account for more than 49 percent of private-sector employment, according to the federal Small Business Administration.

But as an entrepreneur, you’re more interested in your own bottom line than in national statistics. Advantages of dealing with vendors in your own backyard include:

1. People talk

Word of mouth is huge, and small-business owners meet lots of people. They’re in a great position to recommend you if they know what you’re all about.

“If you’re printing brochures or fliers, the printer now knows about a special event or sale you have coming up,” said Judy Crockett, who operates Manistee, Mich.-based Interactive Marketing & Communication. “They will share that information with people they know.”

And the owner of that business also might become a customer.

PITTSBURGH HISTORICAL STUFF

The History Center and Sports Museum Catch World Cup Fever
Artifacts from the 1950 World Cup are now on display.

The last time Brazil hosted the World Cup, in 1950, a Western Pennsylvania native was one of the stars for Team USA.

Nicholas DiOrio grew up in Morgan, Pa., a coal mining town near Bridgeville in southern Allegheny County. For 22 years, he devoted his spare time to soccer and he played for the 1939 Avella Juniors that won the national junior championship. In the late 1940s, he played in the short-lived North American Professional Soccer League. As member of the U.S. soccer team, he competed in the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. The U.S. team beat England in an early round, one of the biggest upsets in international soccer.

DiOrio's USA jacket, soccer cleats, and an American Airlines travel bag he used on his flight to Brazil are on display at the Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum and the History Center's Special Collections gallery.

Frick Park Opens
From:  Heinz History Center  |  June 25, 1927

In 1919, Henry Clay Frick left the city 151 acres south of his Point Breeze mansion, and in 1925, the city acquired an additional 190 acres. Frick Park officially opened in 1927.

Today, Frick Park attracts many visitors to its bike and walking trails, red clay tennis courts, the Frick Environmental Center, public lawn bowling green, and playgrounds for kids.

Look Up & See The Buhl Asteroid
From Our Friends at Pittsburgh Applause
One of the billions of entities in the sky now has a Pittsburgh twist, the Carnegie Science Center announced last month.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named an aster-oid formerly designated as 1900 AA after Henry Buhl Jr. The IAU was founded in 1919 and is the internationally recognized author-ity for assigning designations to celestial bodies. These include stars and planets as well as aster-oids.

Henry Buhl Jr. (1848-1927) was a successful retailer and generous philanthropist who established the Buhl Foundation in his will “to create community legacies by leveraging its resources to encour-age people and organizations to dream, to innovate and to take action.” The foundation’s most famous bequest was the Buhl
Planetarium on the city’s North Side.

“It’s fitting that something of the magnitude and permanence of an asteroid would honor Henry
Buhl’s legacy,” said Ann Metzger, co-director of the Carne-gie Science Center in a press re-lease.
In other CSC news, public rela-tions professional Trip Oliver has joined the center’s board. He is currently the manager of govern-ment and public affairs for the local office of the Chevron Cor-poration multinational energy firm.

ROVING PITTSBURGHER REPORT

Sci-Fi Valley Con
This is the third year for the Sci-Fi Valley Con in Altoona and I have been wanting to go to show my support for local conventions but other events scheduled of past years have interfered with my plans. Not this year, though. I threw on my vest and goggles, waxed my mustache and headed out.
Altoona is a little less than two hours from Pittsburgh and pretty much a straight shot out Route 22. This year’s venue, the Jaffa Shrine Center, is a big 1930s block of a Masonic building and the large Stargate out front made it clear that one had arrived at a con. There was also a large inflatable Laser Tag arena on the lawn.
Inside and first thing through the door was the replica Jurassic Park jeepthat con organizers had built specifically for their con. The jeep was joined by Christine, the 1966 Batmobile, Ecto-1 and, a staple at Pittsburgh comic conventions, the “Back to the Future” Delorian time machine.

About Leaders in Learning
Although nearly 60 years have passed since Brown v. Board of Education overturned the legal doctrine of segregation in schools, a racial achievement gap in American education persists.  In Pittsburgh Public Schools there was a 30 percentage point gap between black and white students’ achievement in reading and math for the year 2012. Too many children in our region, especially children of color, are growing up without the academic foundation to succeed in life.  Our collective future rests on our ability to educate the next generation.  The stakes are high.

Ensuring that all children receive an education that will prepare them for life requires engagement from the whole community, including teachers, administrators, and policymakers, but also family members, community-based organizations, and business leaders.  The Coro approach to change assumes that each person holds a unique perspective and a particular set of gifts that positions them to make interventions at various leverage points within the community system in which schools are embedded.

Leaders in Learning is a part-time, year-long leadership enhancement and civic engagement program that seeks to nurture a next generation of leaders who are committed to strengthening achievement of students in southwestern Pennsylvania’s primary and secondary schools.  The program is designed for emerging leaders–people who have begun their careers, show strong potential for growth, but are not yet existing leaders in the education sector.  Participants explore root sources of academic achievement and they implement collaborative innovations designed to close the achievement gap. Alumni pursue careers in teaching, school administration, research, consulting, policymaking, advocacy, community organizing, social services, and youth programs.

Who Are Leaders in Learning?

  • 26% identify as male
  • 74% as female
  • 35% identify as black or African American
  • 58% as white
  • 20% report working in the public (government) sector
  • 10% in the private (for-profit business) sector
  • 59% in the nonprofit sector
