The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Remembers Former Director Lorin Maazel
The entire Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra organization was saddened to learn of the passing Maestro Lorin Maazel, who served as the orchestra’s music director from 1984 to 1996. Maazel, age 84, died on July 13, 2014 in Virginia from complications following pneumonia.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Maestro Lorin Maazel. There can be no doubt that he had a significant impact on the musical life of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and the music world as a whole. I, myself, played many times under his baton and was struck by his prodigious talent and quest for perfection,” said Manfred Honeck, current music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony. “He left behind a core of musical leaders that still define the Pittsburgh Symphony today and an incredible standard of playing. As one of his successors, I am deeply indebted to him for creating the ideal culture of musicians and the music-making exemplified in this orchestra. All of us at the Pittsburgh Symphony and our audiences, both here and around the world, continue to benefit from the work he did in Pittsburgh. I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family and his many friends and fans. We have truly lost one of the world’s greatest conductors.”
Born in Paris in 1930, Maazel began violin lessons at age five, and conducting lessons at age seven. He and his family moved to Pittsburgh so that he could study conducting with Vladimir Bakaleinikoff, who had become associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1939. Between ages nine and 15, he conducted most of the major American orchestras, including the NBC Symphony at the invitation of Arturo Toscanini. In the course of his decades-long career, Maazel conducted more than 150 orchestras in no fewer than 5,000 opera and concert performances. He made more than 300 recordings, including symphonic cycles of complete orchestral works by Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, Mahler, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff and Richard Strauss, winning 10 Grands Prix du Disques.
During his career, Maazel served as artistic director of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and general manager of the Vienna State Opera, as music director of the Radio Symphony of Berlin, the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic, with whom he made an unprecedented visit to North Korea in 2008. He also was a highly regarded composer, with a wide-ranging catalog of works written primarily over the last 15 years.
“The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra joins the international music community in mourning the passing of a Pittsburgh native who began his music career as a child prodigy and grew to become the most prolific conductor of perhaps all time. He conducted some 150 orchestras during his lifetime and we, in Pittsburgh, benefited from and deeply respected his time with us as music director. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Maazel family,” said James Wilkinson, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Roberto Clemente Musical World Premiere, 2 More Beloved Musicals, Tennessee Williams Classic, and a Shakespearean Comedy Highlight Conservatory Theatre Company’s 2014-2015 Season
The season begins Oct. 17 and runs through April 26, 2015, at the Pittsburgh Playhouse in the city’s Oakland neighborhood.
Written by Alki Steriopoulos, “21” will be directed by Richard Sabellico, who has directed Off-Broadway, national tours, and several Pittsburgh CLO productions, including The Music Man (starring Jeff Goldblum and Ed Begley Jr.), The Pajama Game, and Bells Are Ringing.
The season’s other productions are William Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy, As You Like It, directed by John Amplas, the musicals Urinetown, directed by Zeva Barzell, and The Boy Friend, directed by Jack Allison, and Tennessee Williams’ timeless classic, A Streetcar Named Desire, directed by Martin Giles.
The Conservatory Theatre Company 2014-2015 season subscriptions, which save patrons up to 35 percent off single-ticket prices, are available now. Five-show season packages are $50-$70. Those who purchase three subscriptions get the fourth free. Single tickets are $18-$20 and go on sale at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Pittsburgh Blues Festival Offers 20th Year of Great Blues and Feeding the Hungry

“We always try to include some classic blues bands and some new people, and different blues styles, and we certainly have done that this year,” said Esser. “There’s Louisiana bayou and New Orleans funk, Texicana roots, R&B and steel slide: something for everybody.” Friday’s admission is FREE with a bag of nonperishable groceries to donate to the Food Bank. The Slide Brothers are four of the best slide guitarists living today, a “dynamic, house-rocking blend of blues, gospel, rock and soul that respects faith and funk.” Friday gets even funkier with Big Sam’s Funky Nation, “a walking, talking, funking class in the history and myriad styles of funk…that most grooving and gritty stepchild of blues, soul and classic R & B.”
Saturday is a full day of music that starts with Gina Sicilia, the 2008 “Best New Artist” at the International Blues Challenge, with a throaty “dark-honey” powerful voice. Next is Eric Lindell, a Festival favorite who has brought his soulful New Orleans “roots” blues to the Festival before. Later on, Joe Louis Walker will take the stage. A consummate bluesman, Joe Louis Walker has been around long enough to have played with Mike Bloomfield. His gritty heavy blues-rock sound has critics calling him a “legendary blues icon.”
Saturday night’s headliner is Los Lonely Boys, currently enjoying a resurgence of popularity with their critically-acclaimed new release Rockpango. “Like previous releases, the band jumps from Latin-tinged funk to bluesy, Stevie Ray Vaughan styled guitar blowouts to sweet, acoustic melodies, while the brothers’ charismatic harmonies remain a constant selling-point throughout.”
And Sunday features J. D. McPherson, The Nighthawks with Billy Price, and Tab Benoit. McPherson is new on the blues scene, having just released his first CD in 2010, and is known for mixing and matching blues styles with a sound all his own. The Nighthawks are from the other end of the age spectrum, a quartet with decades of success still going strong with some original and some new members. Mark Stutso, a well-known Pittsburgh musician in the Norman Nardini/Glenn Pavone circle, is the latest addition to the Nighthawks. With Billy Price at the front of the stage, this act is sure to remind the audience that Pittsburgh has produced an amazing number of great musicians.
The musical menu will also be filled out by an additional six or seven local bands. Pittsburgh Blues Festival is an all-weekend music extravaganza, a family-friendly green event with food, merchandise, a kids’ activity tent, zero-waste recycling, and best of all it embraces a great cause. Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank helps provide food for more than 120,000 children, seniors and working families every month.

Boyz II Men Reunites with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in One-Night-Only Performance

Boyz II Men members Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman met as students at the prestigious Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts. In a career that has spanned more than 20 years and 15 albums, the group’s distinctive R&B sound has made a mark with their individual voices and peerless harmonies. Led by Resident Conductor Lawrence Loh, audience members will enjoy hits like “Water Runs Dry,” “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye,” “I’ll Make Love to You” and many others with full orchestral accompaniment.
This concert features “tweet seats,” a seating section (Grand Tier, rows C-T) where audience members are encouraged to share their concert experience in real time via social media with the hashtag “#BoyzIIMenPGH.”

Pittsburgh Premiere Extended! Ring of Fire Will Rock the CLO Cabaret Through August 24
Due to popular demand, Ring of Fire – The Music of Johnny Cash has been extended through August 24 at the CLO Cabaret. The show was previously scheduled to close August 17.

Activities For All Ages at the History Center
Discovery Place, a hands-on laboratory, covers more than 250 years of Pittsburgh history and culture.
Located on the History Center's third floor, above the Pittsburgh: A Tradition of Innovation exhibition, Discovery Place uses hands-on experiences to depict the lives of Western Pennsylvanian children over the past 200 years. The kids-centered area also includes "Get to the Point," an interactive trivia game focused on Pittsburgh innovations.Kidsburgh, a two-story play place in the museum's first floor Great Hall, immerses the history fans of tomorrow in fun, interactive Pittsburgh-themed activities.
Alongside an interactive model of Pittsburgh, kids can design their own city using models of buildings, boats, and sports stadiums, serve up Isaly's "ice cream," and milk a mooing "cow" at Reymer's Old-Fashioned Deli. Then zoom down the Liberty Tube, a 12-foot spiral slide that kids love.

Digital Storytelling Workshops for Teens

The History Center's Digital Storytelling summer learning experience allows teens to create vibrant multimedia stories about people and places in Pittsburgh history. These digital projects will illuminate objects and stories within the History Center's archival and museum collection, allowing teens to curate the collection in their own voice. The digital stories will be shared with visitors through a "New Voices for the Past" gallery guide.
The workshop is designed for teens age 12-16. In order to participate, students must attend all four sessions. The cost of the workshop is $50 and includes the use of digital equipment, drinks, and a light snack.

Patient Navigation: Why It's Important
From Addagio Health
Numbers have recently been escalating in the arena of "lost to follow-up" - when a client does not respond to a healthcare provider such as Adagio Health "following up" after being identified as having an abnormality in their Pap test or breast exam.
In 2013, Adagio Health was awarded a grant from the National Susan G. Komen Foundation. Money provided by the grant allows Adagio Health to target vulnerable populations in the state of Pennsylvania. Adagio Health was only one of six organizations in the country to receive it. Funded to the Alliance of PA Councils, it is administered by Adagio Health.This two-year grant, supported by the PA Department of Health, “will help Adagio Health venture into the future of cancer care,” says Lou Ann Jeremko, Adagio Health’s director of statewide cancer programs for Adagio Health. The grant is for clients involved in Komen programming and the PA Department of Health (PADOH) HealthyWoman program.
Cathy Pate, the Statewide Patient Navigator, was hired March 2014 to be the person fully dedicated to helping clients and the process of following up with abnormal test results. As the liaison between client and healthcare provider, it is Cathy’s job to help patients break down barriers that are preventing them from receiving treatment and get them the resources they need. This could include consulting with patients, their family members, providers, the county office and even pharmacies.Read the entire story HERE.

Film Screening: The Rise and Fall of Penn Station

In 1910, the Pennsylvania Railroad successfully accomplished the enormous engineering feat of building tunnels under New York City's Hudson and East rivers, connecting the railroad to New York and New England, knitting together the entire eastern half of the United States. The tunnels terminated in what was one of the greatest architectural achievements of its time, Pennsylvania Station. Penn Station covered nearly eight acres, extended two city blocks, and housed one of the largest public spaces in the world.
But just 53 years after the station’s opening, the monumental building that heralded and represented the American Empire was slated to be destroyed. The destruction of this important landmark was one of the defining moments in American history that gave birth to the modern preservation movement in America. Join us for a screening of this documentary for a comprehensive look back at this defining moment in historic preservation.

Celebrate Downtown Pittsburgh!July 14 - 21 2014
Downtown Dine Around – on Tuesday, July 15, at 5:00 p.m., seven Downtown restaurants, each a participant in the PDP’s Paris to Pittsburgh Façade Grant Program, will offer a food and drink tasting event. Restaurants include Sonoma, Ten Penny, Seviche, Perlé, Grit and Grace, Nine on Nine and Sienna Mercato.Tickets are available for purchase here.
Market Square Farmers Market – on Thursday, July 17, the Market will celebrate Christmas in July, featuring performances from Pittsburgh CLO Ministars and the upcoming “White Christmas” theater show, booths showcasing vendors from the Peoples Gas Holiday Market, and even a special summertime visit from Santa himself.
Downtown Living Expo – occurring in Market Square in conjunction with Project Pop Up Fashion, on Friday, July 18 from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., stop by to meet with representatives of premier residential properties in Downtown Pittsburgh. Representatives will be on hand to talk about the latest in amenities offered in Downtown living.
Salsa in the Square – Finish off Friday’sactivities at 5:00 p.m. in Market Square, with live music by salsa band Machete and free dance instruction by Las Sabras Dance Company.
Downtown Community Clean Up –Saturday, July 19, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, the PDP’s Clean and Safe team will lead the largest volunteer day yet, with more than 150 volunteers completing projects to clean and green Downtown Pittsburgh. If you would like to volunteer, please send an email to Rich Dethlefs.
All Access Downtown – also on Saturday, June 19, Downtown will open the doors to a wide variety of properties that many people have never visited and offer insightful tours of unique art and historical locations. Pittsburgh History and Landmarks will offer all five of their Downtown Walking Tours, the Office of Public Art will provide a special tour of Downtown Public Art, many Downtown churches will be open and available for tours, as will the rooftop of the US Steel Building, a Cultural District Theater, and Downtown residential properties, both model units and currently lived-in properties. Tickets are free but required for most tours, details and links to reserve tickets are available on the PDP website.
Open Streets Pittsburgh – on Sunday, July 20 from 8:00 a.m. – noon. Along with Bike Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the PDP will host Open Streets Pittsburgh. This free event will close Sixth and Market Streets from the Clemente Bridge to Market Square to cars so that people can walk, skate, dance, play, and be social. This will include a half mile of Open Streets and programming will include Yoga, Zumba, dance classes, climbing walls and much more. You have to try out their new frozen fruit drinks and also the Wild Caught Mussels in Marinara. What a treat! We had guests from Mumbai, India and they loved it also.
Double Wide Grille, Southside
Frozen mohitos with loads of fresh mint. What an afternoon with old friends. Also one of our guests tried, "The Marriage Counselor" with pineapple juice, cucumber rind, basil and gin. She found it delightful. Loads of choices on the menu from vegetarian, which we had to "diner fair" like wings and burgers. The huge menu is overpowering. We literally gourged ourselves on seitan wings, coconut tofu, sesame and peanut tofu and a huge California salad with avocoado and sprouts and just about every fruit and vegetable in season. AND they have for real cornbread.
Downtown Gallery Crawl and Cosmopolitan Pittsburgh
Downtown was awash with people for the free gallery crowd and iside the August Wilson Center, the VIP Cosmopolitan Party and post VIP dance party was sold out. What a night.

On Course Management. Playing from different tee boxes will help work on different parts of your game. Some days, play from the forward tees - it helps you work on the short game. On other days, play from the back tees to help work on your longer clubs. Playing from a combination of different tees will help you see the course from a different perspective. If you are always playing the same course from the same tees, it can be b-o-r-i-n-g!! Challenge yourself!!
