About the Play
Blithe Spirit: Not since 1971, when Helen Wayne Rauh played Madame Arcati for The Playhouse has Pittsburgh seen a professional production of Noel Coward’s classic comedy Blithe Spirit. Perhaps more remarkably, Mrs. Rauh played the very same role in 1945! Written to entertain London’s beleaguered audiences during World War II, this comedy tells the story of Charles Condomine, a novelist who hosts a séance with the quirky clairvoyant Madame Arcati in order to gather material for a book. Much to Charles’ surprise, Madame Arcati not only successfully makes contact with his first wife, Elvira, but now Elvira won’t leave him alone – and his second wife, Ruth, is none too pleased!

Once again, Innovation Works and Ernst & Young have joined forces to produce an assessment of the region’s technology investment landscape. The collective findings for the period from 2009 – 2013 tell the story of a region not just recovering from a recession, but outpacing national averages and comparing favorably with many benchmark regions. Here are just a few of the exciting highlights in this report that shine a light on the momentum building in the region’s start-up ecosystem:
•
• Between 2009 and 2013, Pittsburgh technology companies achieved 34 exits, the value of which totals more than $3 billion;
• Pittsburgh ranks 3rd in the number of venture deals per capita compared to similar regions and those that are more active technology hubs; and

NEIGHBORHOOD HI-LIGHTS
Pittsburghers Kept on Trucking Even though Frigid, Snowy and Gray
// 03/19/2014
// 03/19/2014
It’s been
a remarkably long, hard winter in Pittsburgh – and the numbers tell the story.
Counting the clear days requires only a few fingers. In the 70 days from Dec. 1
through Feb. 28, only two were clear, according to the National Weather
Service, which defines a clear day as one with less than 1/4 average cloud
cover.
It’s been
much more frigid than usual, too. January had 6 days with an average low
temperature below 0 degrees, compared with the 30-year average of only 1.4 days.
January’s average high of 31.7 was 4 degrees colder than the monthly norm. Its
average low was 12.5, considerably below the 21.1-degree norm. In February, the
average high of 34.1 degrees was 5.2 degrees colder than normal, and the
average low of 17.3 degrees was 5.7 degrees below normal.
Higher
than average snow started early and kept coming. December’s 15 inches was 81
percent more than the 8.3-inch norm. January’s 17.9 inches beat the 30-year
January average of 11.5 inches by 56 percent. And February’s 16.1 inches was 58
percent more than the 10.2-inch average.
Take
heart, though. Spring may not have sprung, but there’s already been a clear day
in March – half the total of the previous three months.
