Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Announces Swimmy, Frederick and Inch By Inch
Friday April 11 and Saturday April 12 2014 | Byham Theater
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the area premiere of a musical for younger audiences, presented as part the Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater’s Family Series, Swimmy, Frederick & Inch by Inch, will be performed by Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, from Canada. Four performances will be held only at the Byham Theater on Friday, April 11, at 11:00 a.m. (students only matinee) and 7:00 p.m.; and Saturday, April 12, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Citizens Bank is the season sponsor of Pittsburgh International Children’s Theater 2013-2014 Family Series.
Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia brings three of Leo Lionni’s exquisitely crafted and award-winning Coldecott Honor books to life with Swimmy, Frederick & Inch by Inch. Swimmy is a tiny fish that uses ingenuity to fend off danger. Frederick, a poetic mouse, makes everyday life an artful experience. Inch by Inch, a lovable inchworm shares his facility for measuring absolutely everything. These stories provide a gentle storytelling style, innovative puppetry and charming original music, which have earned Mermaid Theatre international acclaim. This production features the direction and design of Jim Morrow, original soundscape composed by Stephen Naylor, and narration by Richard Donat. This live performance is 60 minutes in length and recommended for youth ages 3 and up.
Single tickets (in advance) are $9 for subscribers and $9.50 for non-subscribers. Single tickets purchased at the door are $11. Musical Kids Finalists Chosen for Classical WQED-FM 89.3 Contest
Public invited to vote online at wqed.org/musicalkids April 11 – 30, 2014
Over 40 entries were received from young musicians around the region who play the piano, violin, cello, and classical guitar or sing for Classical WQED-FM 89.3’s Musical Kids competition for middle school students. Twelve finalists in grades six to eight have been chosen, and half of the students hail from North Allegheny School District in Pittsburgh. In addition, two are from Monongalia County schools in West Virginia, with the remaining students attending private and charter schools, or being home schooled.

Winners will be announced Monday, May 5 on Classical WQED-FM 89.3 by Anna Singer at noon and recognized publicly at “Classical WQED-FM 89.3 Night” following the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s performance at Heinz Hall on Friday, May 9. A special program hosted by Jim Cunningham with interviews and LIVE performances with the winners will air on Performance in Pittsburgh Friday, May 30 at 7:00 p.m. on Classical WQED-FM 89.3. In addition, presentations will be held at each winner’s school where prizes including a plaque will be awarded. Funding for Musical Kids is made possible by grants from the Snee-Reinhardt Charitable Foundation and The Fine Foundation.

These are the 50 smartest colleges in the U.S. (and #1 will surprise you). Forget the Ivy League and Stanford — the smartest college in America is not what you might think.
Washington University in St. Louis came out on top of Lumosity’sannual ranking of the “smartest colleges in America.” Last year’s winner, MIT, came in second, followed by Princeton University, Northwestern, and Carnegie Mellon. Harvard and Yale came in eight and ninth, respectively, and Stanford settled down in 12th place. This is a pretty significant fall for Harvard and Stanford, which ranked second and third in last year’s report. It is also a significant rise for Washington University and Carnegie Mellon, which finished sixth and 17th in 2012. The University of Chicago, Rice University, and Dartmouth were also in the top 10 this year.
Lumosity creates brain-training exercises and since 2007 has amassed the world’s largest and continuously growing dataset of human cognitive performance, made up of 1.2 billion data points from its 50 million users. This particular study examined game play data from 72,388 college students who played Lumosity games that challenge five cognitive areas: memory, processing speed, flexibility, attention, and problem solving.
“College rankings typically rely on standardized test scores and GPA — what’s unique about our college rankings is that we are able to measure a sample of a student population’s core cognitive abilities, which are important underlying factors that allow you to function in your everyday life,” said Lumosity data scientist Daniel Sternberg, PhD.
All the institutions were ranked based on their median Grand Index score. Washington University earned 115.34; followed by MIT with 114.50, Princeton with 114.11, Northwestern with 112.36, and Carnegie Mellon with 111.99.

4th Annual Pittsburgh Jazzlive International Festival: 200 Jazz Musicians, 72 hours of Jazz Music in the Heart of Pittsburgh’s Cultural District

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is proud to present the fourth annual Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival (PJLIF) on June 20–22, 2014. PJLIF will consist of three days of free jazz and jazz-influenced musical performances on outdoor stages throughout downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. PJLIF attracts more than 20,000 attendees from around the country. The Festival features local, emerging, and national and international musicians in a variety of performance settings, including outdoor performance stages and indoor performance locations within local restaurants, coffee shops and galleries.

Dianne Reeves is among the preeminent jazz vocalists in the world. A multiple Grammy-winner, Reeves has recorded and performed extensively with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra featuring Wynton Marsalis, who said of Reeves, “She has one of the most powerful, purposeful and accurate voices of this or any time.”

Our Pantagleize is a take on beat poet Allen Ginsberg, off to be King of May in Prague, but he’s taken up in alternating turns by a quirky guide, a sexy spy, and a nasty dictator. As in the original, our hero unwittingly starts a revolution by saying the secret password, producing a darkly humorous attack on militarism.

Dianne Reeves is among the preeminent jazz vocalists in the world. A multiple Grammy-winner, Reeves has recorded and performed extensively with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra featuring Wynton Marsalis, who said of Reeves, “She has one of the most powerful, purposeful and accurate voices of this or any time.”

Grammy-nominated trumpeter, composer, and educator Sean Jones returns to the festival stage with an installation of the lauded series Jazz Meets Funk, performing with Dwayne Dolphin and Fred Wesley, best known for his work with James Brown. A Tribute to Art Blakey is performed by The Messenger Legacy, featuring Ralph Peterson, Bobby Watson, Brian Lynch, Billy Pierce, Donald Brown, and Reggie Workman. Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia brings three of Leo Lionni’s exquisitely crafted and award-winning Coldecott Honor books to life with Swimmy, Frederick & Inch by Inch. Swimmy is a tiny fish that uses ingenuity to fend off danger. Frederick, a poetic mouse, makes everyday life an artful experience. Inch by Inch, a lovable inchworm shares his facility for measuring absolutely everything. These stories provide a gentle storytelling style, innovative puppetry and charming original music, which have earned Mermaid Theatre international acclaim. This production features the direction and design of Jim Morrow, original soundscape composed by Stephen Naylor, and narration by Richard Donat. This live performance is 60 minutes in length and recommended for youth ages 3 and up.

Musical Kids Finalists Chosen for Classical WQED-FM 89.3 Contest

Over 40 entries were received from young musicians around the region who play the piano, violin, cello, and classical guitar or sing for Classical WQED-FM 89.3’s Musical Kids competition for middle school students. In addition, two are from Monongalia County schools in West Virginia, with the remaining students attending private and charter schools, or being home schooled.

These are the 50 smartest colleges in the U.S. (and #1 will surprise you). Forget the Ivy League and Stanford — the smartest college in America is not what you might think.
Washington University in St. Louis came out on top of Lumosity’sannual ranking of the “smartest colleges in America.” Last year’s winner, MIT, came in second, followed by Princeton University, Northwestern, and Carnegie Mellon. Harvard and Yale came in eight and ninth, respectively, and Stanford settled down in 12th place. This is a pretty significant fall for Harvard and Stanford, which ranked second and third in last year’s report. It is also a significant rise for Washington University and Carnegie Mellon, which finished sixth and 17th in 2012. The University of Chicago, Rice University, and Dartmouth were also in the top 10 this year.
Lumosity creates brain-training exercises and since 2007 has amassed the world’s largest and continuously growing dataset of human cognitive performance, made up of 1.2 billion data points from its 50 million users. This particular study examined game play data from 72,388 college students who played Lumosity games that challenge five cognitive areas: memory, processing speed, flexibility, attention, and problem solving.
“College rankings typically rely on standardized test scores and GPA — what’s unique about our college rankings is that we are able to measure a sample of a student population’s core cognitive abilities, which are important underlying factors that allow you to function in your everyday life,” said Lumosity data scientist Daniel Sternberg, PhD.
All the institutions were ranked based on their median Grand Index score. Washington University earned 115.34; followed by MIT with 114.50, Princeton with 114.11, Northwestern with 112.36, and Carnegie Mellon with 111.99.

This year’s theme, Reaching Across Boundaries, aims to highlight cross-sector and regional collaboration in community planning, land recycling, affordable housing, transit-oriented development, and neighborhood revitalization. This premier community development summit attracts more than 500 leaders from across Pennsylvania and surrounding states to Downtown Pittsburgh for two days of sharing best practices. This year, the Summit will feature keynote presentations from Shelley Poticha, director of NRDC’s Urban Solutions Program, and David Rusk, author of Cities without Suburbs.

Everyone loves a comeback story. I wanted to share this terrific segment featured on the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams earlier this week.
This story has special meaning for PennFuture — we are proud to have been part of this community effort, and to have such a great outcome.
PennFuture helped score a major victory for conservation and wildlife when the state put an end to a developer's plan to strip mine Hays Woods, one of Pittsburgh's largest and most intact green spaces.
PennFuture's legal eagles intervened in the case, and the Environmental Hearing Board relied on a previous mining case decision where we also intervened.
Financial support and citizen action were critical in protecting Hays Woods — with hundreds turning out at public meetings, speaking out against the project and lobbying public officials to turn it down.
Now a family of bald eagles is nesting in Hays Woods. We're thrilled by their endorsement of our work! Every year, we provide at least $2 million in legal assistance across the state, and our results have consistently worked to promote Pennsylvania’s environment.

On Saturday evening April 5 downtown Pittsburgh was filled with two types of fans, baseball and music. Both type of fans excited and looking for their team to deliver a winning performance. And my team, starring the Pittsburgh Symphony with Mandy Patinkin delivered a superb win. Our star player, Mr. Mandy Patinkin, singer, actor, performer well known for his Broadway roles in Evita and Sunday in the Park with George and beloved for his characters from film and television, such as Inigo Montoya in The Princess Bride and Saul Berenson in Homeland, the Tony delivered an unforgettable evening of popular song and Broadway Classics.
Mandy’s performance was infused with wonderful personal stories with an easy interplay with the Pittsburgh symphony orchestra. He brings everyone along on his musical journey and personal memories on his career. Bethel Park HS Wins National Hockey Title

The Bethel Park High School hockey team is bringing home a national championship. According to a press release from the school, Bethel Park defeated Providence Catholic (Ill.) 2-1 to win the 2014 USA Hockey National Championship.
The tournament was held in Omaha, Neb. and featured 32 of the top teams from around the country. Pennsylvania state champion Peters Township also competed in the tournament, but did not advance out of group play. Bethel Park opened play on Wednesday with a 9-2 win over Cherry Creek, Colo., which was their most convincing win of the tournament.
They would go on to defeat Medina, Ohio 4-2, tie J Serra, Calif. 4-4, defeat Sioux Falls, S.D. 3-0 and defeat Des Moines, Iowa 3-1 to reach Sunday’s championship game. With today’s win, Bethel Park became the first school from Pennsylvania to claim the national title. The team bus is expected to return to the area around 7:45 a.m. Monday. They will receive a police escort to the high school, where an assembly will be held to congratulate them.
