PA LitFest aims to engage and inform attendees concerning literary achievements, opportunities, and educational programs within the state and surrounding areas by assembling publishers, authors, libraries, schools, literary agencies, reading associations, book clubs, and the general public.
The event features industry exhibitors, author appearances, signings, readings, live music, a charity auction, cooking demos, free writing and publishing workshops, storytellers, writing contests, activities for kids, live tapings and interviews with FCTV and GoingLIVE, and a variety of food and beverages spread throughout multiple locations within the Uniontown Mall.

We are looking for AEA and non-union actors to audition for Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks' September 2014 production of "As You Like It," directed by Lisa Ann Goldsmith.
Auditions will be held Saturday, April 26th from 10-noon with callbacks on Saturday, May 10 at Frick Park, Blue Slide Playground, Beechwood Blvd and Nicholson Street, Squirrel Hill.

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and BNY Mellon Grand Classics Celebrate Life and Works of Mozart

Each of Wolfgang Amade Mozart’s vast number of compositions is considered a musical gem. Join Music Director Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as they celebrate Mozart’s extensive catalog of masterpieces during the BNY Mellon Grand Classics Mozart Festival, a two-week exploration of the five pillars of Mozart’s music — symphony, concerto, chamber music, opera and sacred music.
The opening weekend of the festival, April 25-27, features celebrated Mozart scholar and pianist Robert Levin, who will join the Pittsburgh Symphony in performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20, a favorite concerto of Beethoven’s. Attendees are in for a special treat, as Levin performs improvisations (a la Mozart) on themes suggested by the audience and the symphony performs Mozart’s famous “Eine kleine Nachtmusik.” Principal Horn William Caballero gives the first performance of Levin's new edition of Mozart’s stunning Concerto No. 1 in D major for Horn and Orchestra. The program closes with Honeck leading the popular Symphony No. 41, “Jupiter.” As a special treat, a quartet of Pittsburgh Symphony musicians — Christopher Wu, Susanne Park, Meng Wang and Anne Martindale Williams— will give a post-concert recital of one of Mozart’s chamber works in preparation for the next event in the festival.
The close of the Mozart Festival on May 2 & 4, “Mad About Mozart,” takes a lighter tone and is hosted by creative force Don Marinelli portraying a variety of figures from Mozart’s life and works. Also joining the Pittsburgh Symphony and Maestro Honeck on stage are the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh and soloists Lucas Meachem (baritone) and Sunhae Im (soprano) in a variety of selections from Mozart’s sacred works and most famous operas, such as “The Magic Flute” and “Don Giovanni.”
Opening weekend concert times are 8 p.m. on Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 27. Music of Mozart at the Carnegie Music Hall is at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29. The Mozart Festival finale weekend features concerts at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 2 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 4. 17th Year of Art All Night: Lawrenceville Brings Community Together for a Free Art Event

Art All Night is an annual non- juried, uncensored 24-hour art show in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Art All Night admission and artist participation is free and open to the public. Art All Night merchandise is available for purchase and a live art auction features the collaborative work of on-site artists. All the proceeds from the evening directly support Art All Night.
The 17th annual Art All Night will feature original artwork, activities for children and adults, an art auction and live entertainment. Throughout the night, guests can participate in collaborative art activities, including chalk art, group improv sessions, and memory drawing. On-site artists will collaborate to create a work of art, and the live art auction gives guests a chance to bid on the pieces created during the 24-hour period.
Art All Night for Children - Children's activities will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 26, and again 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27. The children's area will be adjacent to a youth-friendly section of art; the rest of the show is uncensored. Children and families will have the chance to build their own cardboard city, weave using recycled materials, and create silkscreen prints, among other fun activities.
Call for Artists - Art All Night is a community event that gives everyone an opportunity to exhibit art. Artists are encouraged to participate by submitting one work to the show, regardless of age or skill level. All mediums are accepted and participation is always free.
To participate in the show, artists must drop off their work between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m Saturday, April 26, at Willow Street Development, 40th and Willow Street in Lawrenceville. All artwork must arrive ready to hang or otherwise be displayed. Artists submitting work will need to show a photo ID during both registration and pickup; art pickup is 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27.
Call for Donations and Volunteers - Donations can also be made to the event in all forms from local businesses and friends of Art All Night. All donors will be listed on the acknowledgement board during the event. Art All Night is an event organized and staffed entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers. Volunteer shifts are available throughout the 24 hour period and volunteers can assist with various tasks during the event.

The Hippest Opera You’ll See This Year: Pittsburgh Opera’s Orphee

Pittsburgh Opera continues its 75th anniversary season with an opera rooted in a 20th-century film that is inspired by an ancient myth: Philip Glass’s ORPHEE, based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, as interpreted by the French visionary Jean Cocteau. The third work in Pittsburgh Opera’s American Opera Series, ORPHEE is on stage at the Benedum Center April 26 – May 4. Based on Cocteau’s film from 1950 post-war France, the ultra-suave production by Sam Helfrich (Eugene Onegin, 2009) premiered at Glimmerglass Opera in 2007 to glowing reviews. Mr. Glass’s ORPHEE (1993) is influenced by jazz, honky-tonk, and modal harmonies, creating a hypnotic, seductive whole. Cocteau’s “through the mirror” cinematic effect is cleverly conveyed on stage by sets of hanging metallic beads, body doubles and back-to-back furnishings. The costumes are chic. The look is modern. There are also amusing touches: a large portrait of Orphee that recalls Chuck Close’s famous portraits of Mr. Glass, and a glazier in the Underworld, who works for “Phil’s Glass.” In 2005, Mr. Glass reciprocated with a musical portrait of Mr. Close.
ORPHEE has a Pittsburgh connection: before he was “Philip Glass,” and before today’s young composers (Nico Muhly, Gregory Spears) cited him as a major influence, and before he appeared on Saturday Night Live, Philip Glass was a composer-in-residence for Pittsburgh Public Schools. Quoted in Pittsburgh Magazine’s October 2013 feature “Glass Goes to Class,” distinguished local composer David Stock remarked, “Philip was the only composer to ever give up a year in Paris for a second year in Pittsburgh.” Mr. Glass had received a Fulbright scholarship to study in France with Nadia Boulanger; however, he was asked to remain in Pittsburgh. He was awarded the Fulbright again a year later, leaving for Paris in Fall 1964. Mr. Glass is expected to be in Pittsburgh to attend the dress rehearsal of ORPHEE on April 24 and to give a lecture at Carnegie Mellon University on April 25.

Pittsburgh Public Theater’s Masterpiece Season continues with George Bernard Shaw’s sparkling comedy, Candida, directed by Ted Pappas. Candida runs April 17 – May 18, 2014 at the O’Reilly Theater, Pittsburgh Public Theater’s home in the heart of Downtown’s Cultural District.
Candida features three accomplished actors who are returning to Pittsburgh Public Theater to be part of the Masterpiece Season. Playing the passionate poet, Eugene Marchbanks, is Jared McGuire, who appeared in last season’s popular production of Clybourne Park. Playing the practical parson, Reverend James Morell, is David Whalen, who is back at The Public for the seventh time and was seen most recently in Good People. In the title role of Candida is the dazzling Gretchen Egolf, the radiant Rosalind in The Public’s hit As You Like It, and the elegant Jackie Kennedy in The Secret Letters of Jackie and Marilyn.
In Candida, Reverend Morell is a socialist reformer and his intelligent wife Candida, sometimes called Candy, manages their London vicarage. When idealistic young Marchbanks comes to visit, he is infatuated with the beautiful Candida and hopes to disrupt the couple’s domestic order. In this romantic tug of war, she must decide what love really means. Also present in the household are Candida’s jocular father, Mr. Burgess (John O’Creagh), Morell’s curate, Reverend Alexander Mill (Matthew Minor), and secretary Proserpine Garnett (Meghan Mae O’Neill). Shaw’s play made its American premiere in 1903 and is still a triumph of sophisticated wit.

Sign Up for PSIP's Steel on Stage Summer Camp
July 14-18, 2014 | 9 AM – 4 PM | En Garde Fencing Club, Etna PA
We start each day learning the modern sport of fencing, working with coaches from the En Garde Fencing Club. After lunch, we move into drama – working first on developing characters and scenes with instructors from Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks. We put all this together in stage combat routines, combining the fencing skills with the drama work to create swordplay on stage. The week culminates with a production of “Romeo and Juliet: the Good Parts Version” (all the duels, none of the romance).
Students do not need to have any experience with fencing. Students who have fencing experience will work with other experienced fencers. The stage combat routines are designed to match campers' experience level. Similarly, no experience performing Shakespeare is required.

Supreme Court Upholds Firearms Ban for Domestic Violence Offenders

We cheered on March 26 when the US Supreme Court upheld legislation that bars those convicted of domestic violence from owning firearms. States had challenged the ban, which includes those convicted of more minor, misdemeanor charges.
Bolstering the law that removes firearms from these situations, will increase women's safety. If perpetrators do not have access to guns, the law also indirectly provides additional protection for the workplace, since perpetrators will be less able to arrive there with a weapon looking for their victims.
The presence of a gun in domestic violence situations increases the risk of death by 500%, according to a study published in the American Journal of Public Health.

April marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month - recognizing the importance of raising awareness about sexual violence, how to prevent it, and reinforcing support for its victims. This spring, National Council of Jewish Women Pittsburgh Section (NCJW) will kick off an exciting new sale for Designer Days shoppers. The first-ever Spring Designer Days shopping event will be held April 24-27 at the NCJW Home Consignment Store, located at 1913 Monongahela Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15218 in Swissvale. Additionally, NCJW’s annual fall Designer Days event will be held November 6-9, also at the Home Consignment Store.
NCJW’s Designer Days events support extensive programming and initiatives that benefit women, children and families throughout the Greater Pittsburgh region. Proceeds from this year’s Spring Designer Days event and the fall sale will directly support NCJW initiatives and community service projects, including The Center for Women, a joint initiative of NCJW and The Jewish Women’s Foundation. Launched in 2013, The Center for Women works to ensure women in the community are able to achieve and maintain economic independence and self-sufficiency. The Center for Women provides programs and initiatives dedicated to helping women increase financial literacy, build career-related skills, connect with mentorship and internship opportunities and provide referrals to additional support services.
Admission to the Spring Designer Days Preview Shopping Party is $20 per person and can be paid at the door. Shoppers who attend the Preview Party obtain first access to the best merchandise. 17th Year of Art All Night: Lawrenceville Brings Community Together for a Free Art Event
Saturday, April 26, 2014 4 PM - Sunday, April 27, 2014 2 PM
The 17th annual Art All Night will feature original artwork, activities for children and adults, an art auction and live entertainment. Throughout the night, guests can participate in collaborative art activities, including chalk art, group improv sessions, and memory drawing. On-site artists will collaborate to create a work of art, and the live art auction gives guests a chance to bid on the pieces created during the 24-hour period.
Art All Night for Children - Children's activities will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 26, and again 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, April 27. The children's area will be adjacent to a youth-friendly section of art; the rest of the show is uncensored. Children and families will have the chance to build their own cardboard city, weave using recycled materials, and create silkscreen prints, among other fun activities.
Call for Artists - Art All Night is a community event that gives everyone an opportunity to exhibit art. Artists are encouraged to participate by submitting one work to the show, regardless of age or skill level. All mediums are accepted and participation is always free.
To participate in the show, artists must drop off their work between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m Saturday, April 26, at Willow Street Development, 40th and Willow Street in Lawrenceville. All artwork must arrive ready to hang or otherwise be displayed. Artists submitting work will need to show a photo ID during both registration and pickup; art pickup is 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 27.
Call for Donations and Volunteers - Donations can also be made to the event in all forms from local businesses and friends of Art All Night. All donors will be listed on the acknowledgement board during the event. Art All Night is an event organized and staffed entirely by a dedicated team of volunteers. Volunteer shifts are available throughout the 24 hour period and volunteers can assist with various tasks during the event.

Dominating Defensive Performance Pushed the Pittsburgh Passion to Victory in Carolina
The first touchdown of the season came early when Passion Quarterback, Lisa Horton connected to Wide Receiver, Rachel Wojdowski in a 9-yard Touchdown Pass to give the Passion an early 7-0 lead. The first quarter also showcased the Passion’s defense and would continue throughout by ending the quarter 7-6. After a Passion interception by Rookie, Defensive Back, Ashley Strawn, the Passion offense led by Horton began to roll. Touchdowns by Wojdowski and Fullback, Kadesha Clark gave the team a lead. The Passion led at the half 20-6. The second half started with an onside kick recovery by the Passion. The game quickly turned into a battle of the defenses as both squads exchanged possessions in the second half. The Passion broke the goal line for one more rushing touchdown by Clark late in the fourth to make the final score Pittsburgh Passion 29 – Carolina Phoenix 6.
Horton led the team with 215 yards passing and 2 touchdown connections both to Wojdowski. The leading rusher of the night was Running Back, Ciara Chic with 72 yards. Clark added 44 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground. The receiving duo of Rachel Wojdowski and Amanda Haeg combined for 15 receptions for 190 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Linebacker, Octavia Griswold led the team with 7 tackles. Ashley Strawn and Krissy Edmonds each had one interception and veteran player Beth Amato had a fumble recovery. The Passion defense also got on the scoring act in the 4th quarter with Defensive Lineman, Kaitlain Niedermeyer tackling the Carolina Phoenix ball carrier in the end zone for a safety and contributed to 6 more tackles during the game.
The Pittsburgh Passion (1-0) will travel to Philadelphia on April 19, to take on the Philadelphia Firebirds in their week two match-up on the road.
