PICT Theatre Field Trips
Want to get away? PICT has two great escapes tailor-made for theatre fans...

In July, immerse yourself in the Words of Oscar Wilde while staying at the luxurious Mansions on Fifth Hotel.
In October, travel to the picturesque Niagara-on-the-Lake for the Shaw Festival and a wonderful selection of plays.

The Words of Wilde Theatre Immersion with Alan Stanford
Immerse yourself in language and luxury! Retreat into the lavish accommodations of Pittsburgh’s Mansions on Fifth Hotel while PICT’s Interim Producing Artistic Director and Oscar Wilde exponent Alan Stanford guides your exploration into the world of Oscar Wilde.

This unique experience begins with a Sunday evening cocktail reception where you can mingle with fellow theatre lovers and enjoy excerpted readings of Oscar Wilde’s works. Enjoy three full days of group and one-on-one theatre instruction, and conclude your adventure with an evening performance of PICT’s production of Lady Windermere’s Fan.

Investigate the ways Oscar Wilde uses words as weapons. Discover Wilde’s unique language structure and extensive vocabulary to reveal the constant satiric underbelly of his comedies. By examining Wilde’s prose and poetry and his play Salome, theatre lovers will delight in Wilde’s manipulation of the rhythm of the English language to create a perfection of thought in words.

About the accommodations: The Mansions on Fifth Hotel is an urban getaway with soaring ceilings, welcoming fireplaces and irreplaceable stained glass windows. Feed your soul in the historic chapel, century-old wine cellar and elegant library. Relax with a glass of iced tea on the terrace or your favorite spot in The Oak Room. For the height of relaxation and pampering, indulge in The Mansions’ in-room spa services. Visit their website.

The Kreutzer Sonata, COMING MAY 30! Noted Pittsburgh actor/director Martin Giles will premiere the role of Pozdynyshev in PICT’s production of The Kreutzer Sonata, a psychological thriller by Irish playwright Nancy Harris. This production opens in previews on May 30th. The play is based on Leo Tolstoy’s novella of the same name, which was censored by the Russian authorities when it was published in 1889. PICT’s Artistic Director Alan Stanford will direct. Martin Giles is in his 12th season with PICT, with credits including The School for Lies, Ivanov, The Mask of Moriarty, House & Garden, The Importance of Being Earnest, The History Boys, What the Butler Saw and The Gigli Concert, which helped earned him a Post-Gazette Performer of the Year award. In the award announcement, critic Christopher Rawson called Giles one of “Pittsburgh’s busiest, most reliable actors,” and he has a daunting 2013 calendar to prove it. In addition to teaching at Point Park and Carnegie Mellon Universities, he recently earned acclaim for his role in Dream of Autumn and for directing John Gabriel Borkman, both for Quantum Theatre.

Call For Volunteers/Volunteer Opportunities, Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival
June 7-16, 2013 & Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival June 7-9, 2013

The 54th annual Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival and 3rd annual Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival are looking for volunteers! The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival will be held June 7-16, 2013 in the streets, open spaces, galleries and historic plazas of downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District, Gateway Center, and Point State Park. Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival will be held June 7-9 at various locations in the Cultural District.

Every year the success of the Festivals depend on the help of hundreds of volunteers. There are volunteer positions for nearly every age, interest and ability. From heavy lifting to easy sitting, there’s something for you! Volunteers will also be given an official volunteer t-shirt to wear while helping during the Festival. Most volunteer shifts last about four hours. The Festivals need volunteers every day. Individuals, students, groups and families are all encouraged to help, and may choose one shift or multiple shifts.

Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival-Volunteer Opportunities, June 7-16, 2013
Volunteers are needed as information booth concierges, green team, artist booth sitters, roving concierges, activity assistants, gallery assistants, artist hospitality room monitors and loading assistants.

Info Booth Concierges: Paired with a Arts Festival employee, concierges assist with overflow and general questions (Where are the bathrooms? Where are the food booths?)

Booth Sitters: Artist Market Booth Sitters are responsible for relieving artists who have signed up for a 15-minute slot, in order to run errands, get food, and go to the bathroom. Booth sitters do not make sales.

Roving Concierges: Outfitted in a Arts Festival VOLUNTEER t-shirt, Roving Concierges will walk the festival footprint answering questions and being helpful to all Arts Festival patrons.

Creativity Zone and Children’s Activities Assistant: Activities Assistants will help children with crafts and activities in the Giant Eagle Creativity Zone and at the Gateway Center fountain. Volunteers for this must have state clearances.

Gallery Assistant: Gallery Assistants assist the staff at the Visual Arts Galleries throughout the Cultural District. They answer patron’s questions, monitor attendance and help ensure that the art is not damaged.

Artist Hospitality Room Monitor: The Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival will be hosting a hospitality room for artists and their assistants in the Wyndham Grand Hotel. The artist hospitality room monitor will check credentials to ensure that only artists and their assistants enter. They will also monitor the light refreshments and the cleanliness of the space.

Loading Assistants: Loading Assistants help artists find their booths and assist with loading and unloading vehicles. This position requires some heavy lifting and can be labor-intensive.

Green Team Volunteers: Green Team volunteers are needed to help continue the Festival’s efforts again this year promoting environmentally responsible practices. A variety of ‘green team’ volunteer opportunities are available.

Thanks to support from the Colcom Foundation, the Festival has been able to earn a GOLD Standard Accreditation from Pennsylvania Resources Council’s Zero Waste Pittsburgh initiative and diversify its efforts from recycling trash to promoting bicycling, providing onsite environmental education and reducing reliance on plastics. This year the Festival will continue leading practices, through the Foundation’s generous support, with a world-class composting and recycling system-one of the first and largest in the nation which helps divert more than 80% of trash from landfills annually. The Festival also offers free bicycle valet service to encourage eco-friendly transportation to and from downtown and free water stations that encourage refilling personal containers to reduce waste.

Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival Volunteers, June 7-9: A variety of volunteer opportunities are available. To sign up for volunteer opportunities, visit: www.3riversartsfest.org/volunteer/ or call Eric Thomas, Volunteer Coordinator, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, at 412-456-2697.

BYOB (Bring Your Own Bard) Features “Shakespeare's Men”
“And to be more than what you were you would be so much more the man.” (Lady Macbeth). “O God if I were a man! I would eat his heart in the marketplace!” (Beatrice, Much Ado About Nothing). Explore the measure of manhood at “Shakespeare’s Men,” part of Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks’ BYOB - Bring Your Own Bard reading series. On Monday, May 27, BYOB will tackle Shakespeare’s view of manhood, feature readings and scenes starring bold heroes and crafty villains, men of honor and self-serving social climbers. At 7:15 PM at the Te Cafe in Squirrel Hill.

Bring Your Own Bard is an informal scene night in which professional actors and non-actors alike take a crack at their favorite Shakespeare pieces. Participants are encouraged to bring along a piece ready to read, jump into a scene already prepared, or just listen and drink tea. Extra readings will be on hand in case last-minute inspiration strikes. Kids are welcome. Beverages and light fare will be available for purchase.

Doors open at 7:15 PM and readings begin at 7:30 PM. Suggested $10 donation at the door. Anyone interested in reading should contact BYOB@pittsburghshakespeare.com or 412.521.6406, or visit us on Facebook at Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks. THE TE CAFE

PITTSBURGH SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARKS is a non-profit theatre company offering free Shakespeare plays in city parks. In 2012, our production of The Tempest, directed by Alan Irvine, played to over 1,000 patrons over four September weekends. Now celebrating our 9th season, we will be serving up Romeo & Juliet in September 2013. Directed by longtime PSIP member Helen Meade, the production will explore the two parallel trajectories of two of the Bard's most tragic and poignant characters- while playing with time and space in a surprising way.

The market runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with the lunchtime Concert Series happening from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. each week. Most of your favorite vendors from last year will be returning including Always Summer Herbs, Gosia’s Pierogies, and Evelyn’s Elegant Edibles! We are also very excited to have some new vendors joining us like the Edible Earth Farm and Out of the Fire Café! Market-goers can expect a wide variety of goods to choose from such as: farm fresh produce, fresh cut flowers, gourmet treats, baked goods, yarn, and more!

Roving Pittsburgher Report

You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up
Held at the Cabaret Theatre, this great comedy explores how married couples see the same situation from different points of view. Annabelle Gurwitch and Jeff Kahn, yes they use their real names, star in the show. The humor cannot help but touch anyone in the audience who has ever been married. We saw it on the last day but be sure catch it next time if it comes back to Pittsburgh.

Beach Treats Gifts, 972 Brookline Blvd. at Queensboro, Pittsburgh, PA 15226

Pittsburgh Opera Takes Opera Buffa to New Heights With Its Production of La Cenerentola
Review By Hank Walshak

When it comes to opera, I've long been partial to Wagnerian sturm and drang. That is, until I experienced Rossini's Italian, two-act, opera buffa, La Cenerentola. (Cinderella), beautifully set forth by the company of the Pittsburgh Opera.

For us non-Italian-speaking folks, the name, La Cenerentola, translates into the English, Cinderella. Adapted from the French fairy tale, Cendrillon by Charles Perrault, the first performance of La Cenerentola took place in Rome in 1817. Read the entire review here.

Pittsburgh Local Sports

On Saturday of this coming weekend, May 17 – 19, Pittsburghers have the luxurious choice of three different sports games being played at the same time in different sections of Greater Downtown Pittsburgh. What other city offers that much choice in sports’ events?! The Riverhounds play soccer on the South Shore at 7:00 p.m.; the Pittsburgh Power play football at Consol Energy Center at 7:00 p.m.; and the Pirates play baseball at PNC Park at 7:05 p.m.

For the culturally attuned, the Cultural Trust has capacity audiences for all their venues that night. For those interested in outdoor recreational activities, the Venture Outdoors Festival will be at Point State Park from 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Ross Township Police Commendations
Officer Donovan and Officer Devenyi were given the Certificate of Commendation

On 9/22/12, Ptl. Ryan Donovan and Ptl. Balazs Devenyi investigated a hit and run crash that occurred on McKnight Rd. The victim had followed the suspect vehicle to a nearby apartment complex. During their interaction with the suspect driver, his actions and conduct arose suspicion and concern from the officers. During the course of the encounter the suspect driver defied the officers’ verbal directions and began to physically resist. While attempting to restrain the driver, they found that he was attempting to draw a concealed handgun. The officers were able to physically control the driver, secure the firearm and safely affect the arrest. This encounter took place in very close proximity to the hit and run victim, as well as unsuspecting nearby residents. The officers’ diligence, quick reactions, and perseverance enabled them to prevent a deadly encounter. Their actions were in keeping with the highest standards of law enforcement, as well as those of the Ross Township Police Department.

Officer Garcia was given the Department's Life Saving Award
Officer Garcia
Ross Township Police Officer: On 9/19/12, Ptl. Gregory Garcia monitored another police unit being dispatched to assist EMS with a reported 65 year old male who was not breathing. Ptl. Garcia determined that he was closer to the call than the assigned unit and responded. Upon his arrival at the scene, he found the victim to be unresponsive and in full cardiac arrest. Ptl. Garcia immediately updated incoming units, began CPR and utilized his Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Ptl. Garcia’s actions resulted in the victim surviving the attack. His quick response, decisive action and application of training brought a positive outcome to an otherwise tragic event.
