CULTURAL CLUES

PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA DUO TO PLAY AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL IN VIENNA
On August 28, during the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s European Festivals Tour, Concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley and Associate Principal Violist Tatjana Mead Chamis will share their talents with a very special audience. The pair will spend part of their day off visiting

St. Anna Children’s Hospital as part of the Pittsburgh Symphony’s Music and Wellness program. They will play for the hospital’s patients and staff from 2 to 3 p.m.
Pittsburgh Symphony violist Penny Brill, noted for her work with music therapists, will be guiding Bendix-Balgley and Chamis in learning popular Austrian tunes and interacting with the children. There will be a translator to assist with communication, and both Bendix-Balgley and Chamis are fluent in German. Brill pioneered the development of the Music and Wellness Program and played her viola for children at St. Anna’s in 2012 while the orchestra was in residence in Vienna.

St. Anna Children’s Hospital was founded in 1837 and is one of the oldest hospitals in Austria. The hospital treats children up to 18 years of age and specializes in blood disorders and cancer treatment. After last year’s Music and Wellness session, St. Anna’s hospital staff wrote to Brill, saying “It was a privilege for the audience, as well as the staff and family members present, to witness the delight and joy you brought to the sick children. Many of them are still asking when you will be back.”

On August 29 and 30, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Grafenegg Music Festival in Vienna before continuing onto Berlin for the next concert of the symphony’s European Festivals Tour.

Local dentist creates award-winning three-dimensional decor for pediatric practice
Tender Care Pediatric Dentistry
Story compliments of Jayne Huston at E-Magnify
Not many people would compare their dentist to an artist, but that’s exactly how Beatriz De La Roche, DMD views herself and the profession.

“Dentists must have good motor skills,” she explained. “And they actually are sculpting when they fix a tooth…it’s really quite an artistic field.”

De La Roche took her passion for art a step further when she elected to transform her practice, Tender Care Pediatric Dentistry, into a work of art – pleasing her young clients and their parents.
Tender Care Pediatric Dentistry

Not only were her patients impressed, but, so was the staff at Insical Edge Magazine. Last year, Dr. De La Roche’s office was profiled in the magazine for its design as the Best Pediatric Practice; she was nominated by her suppliers and fellow dentists.

“Wow – fun! The décor really caters to pediatric patients,” stated the editorial staff.

Tender Care Pediatric Dentistry

Dr. De La Roche, who stated she spent five years planning for the office, personally sketched every themed room. “I’ve been painting and drawing since I’ve been allowed to draw,” she said. “I concentrate on pastels and wildlife and have had my artwork on display and for sale at galleries in Barcelona.”

Pittsburgh's hot places for cool kids

From Our Friends at Kidsburgh

Kids who thrive in the heat of these melting months of summer will find plenty of cool opportunities in the fresh air and sunshine in Pittsburgh.

When the heat is relentless, there’s nothing more refreshing than the gush of cool water, especially when it’s splashing from colorful buckets and flower spouts and creating shallow pools that cool little toes.

Pittsburgh lost 13 municipal swimming pools in 2004, due to budget cuts. Since then, it has responded with a wave of miniature water parks. Four “spray parks” offer free fun from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.

“Spray parks have been overwhelmingly popular, surpassing our expectations,” says Marissa Doyle, city spokesperson, who notes that they provide easier splashing opportunities for children with disabilities.

The two newest parks opened last May. The Shadyside Spray Park is next to Mellon Park, and the East Hills Park sits beside the city playground on Wilmer Drive; they join spray parks at the former Cowley Pool facility in Troy Hill, and in Beechview, next to the Vanucci Playground, on Orangewood Avenue and Westfield.

The city broke ground on a fifth spray park in July at the Warrington Community Center in Beltzhoover, which promises to be the largest park to date. It will open in August and feature even more water buckets, sea monsters and flower towers than existing parks.

Spray Parks are bringing back a sense of community in the summer months that was lost with the pools, says Tyeshia Morris, who visits all of them with her two children, ages seven and one. “My daughter loves the sprinklers. I have a hard time getting her to leave." Read the entire story here

From Our Friends at the URA
HAVE A GREAT BUSINESS IDEA? NOW THERE’S A WEBSITE THAT CAN HELP YOU GET IT OFF THE GROUND.

On August 1, the URA unveiled a new website designed to connect entrepreneurs with opportunities and serve as a “launchpad” for local and new businesses. The site, LAUNCHPGH.com, is a portal for entrepreneurs, investors and developers who want instant access to Pittsburgh’s best business and networking resources.

LAUNCHPGH.com is divided into three main circles - Biz, Buzz and Burgh - and offers information on everything from funding options to local business events in a responsive, mobile-friendly and easy-to-navigate design that allows all users to quickly locate the exact content they need in just a click or two.

As part of an overall plan to create a more robust entrepreneur environment in Pittsburgh, LAUNCHPGH.com focuses on businesses of all sizes, from small candy vendors to large tech companies, and provides a substantial spread of information. Whether you’re a first-time entrepreneur in the Pittsburgh area, the owner of a startup, a local venture capitalist or investor, a resource provider, or even just looking for job opportunities with a new startup, this site will serve as your compass, cutting through the clutter and pointing you towards the best resource in the least amount of time.

LAUNCHPGH.com was developed by the URA and the 20 organizational members of PowerUp Pittsburgh.

“The URA was uniquely situated to pull together all of the initial partnerships to support an entrepreneur-friendly environment,” said Tom Link, director, URA Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE). “After expanding our Business Development Center into the CIE and bringing on board an innovation and entrepreneurship strategist, we felt this was the logical next step.”

Happy Birthday Pittsburgh 2030 District
The Pittsburgh 2030 District is one year old this month.
Facilitated by Green Building Alliance (GBA), the goal of the program is to improve Downtown Pittsburgh's economic position and sustainability impact by reducing energy and water consumption, and transportation emissions by 50% by the year 2030. To date, property managers and owners with 100 buildings and over 30 million sq. ft. of space have voluntarily joined the 2030 District.

The GBA brings together property owners participating in the program bi-monthly and will host the next property partner meeting on September 17. Partner meetings provide a closed-door environment for property managers and owners to share best practices in energy and water reduction strategies, discuss financing strategies for capital improvements, and analyze potential financial returns for efficiency improvements. These meetings are restricted to properties participating in the Pittsburgh 2030 District, so contact GBA today and join the growing tide of public and private property owners who have committed to making Downtown Pittsburgh even better.

Women’s Day of Action for Health Care
Women across Pennsylvania are calling their legislators today, urging them to accept the Medicaid expansion and extend health care coverage to hundreds of thousands of women and families. The time to act is NOW. Women’s lives are on the line.

Our lawmakers have a chance to accept billions in federal funds to expand Medicaid to people making up to 138% of the federal poverty level ($31,800 for a family of four). That means women who work as hairdressers, home health care workers, servers, and other hourly jobs will finally get the coverage they need.

Around one in ten adult women in Pennsylvania lack health insurance, even though many of them have jobs and families who are dependent on them to stay healthy. Starting in 2014, 7 million women will be newly eligible for Medicaid coverage under the expansion, including over 200,000 Pennsylvania women alone. Stand up for women, stand up for Medicaid expansion - Call Today!
