Pittsburgh’s “No B.S. Marketing Meeting” to Feature “Marketer of the Year” Clint Arthur
“Can Everyone in Pittsburgh Really Have 15 Minutes of Fame Now?”

Andy Warhol famously predicted “In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.” According to Clint Arthur, a Wharton Business School graduate, award winning entrepreneur, and author of Break Through Your Upper Limits on TV, “Warhol was definitely not talking about YouTube.”  “Fame equals TV,” according to Clint Arthur. “And now anyone can get their 15 minutes of fame on TV because I’ve figured out the exact formula.” It looks like this: Hx+Cx+P+D+(AC)+TA/F=TV.

Yes, that’s Arthur’s actual formula for how to get on TV. And no, you don’t need a degree in Math to be able to use it. The author say, “We’ve used this formula to help our clients book themselves on more than 1045 appearances with Local and National ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and CW News & Talk shows across America in just the past 2 years.”  Clients include Authors, Speakers, Coaches, Entrepreneurs of every kind who are committed to the marketing value of Celebrity. Arthur states firmly, “Celebrity is not about Ego, it’s purely about Marketing.” Personal Branding to be more specific. “If nobody knows who you are, your personal brand is worth nothing. The more people who know you, the more value to your personal brand. Celebrity is a valuable asset when used correctly by entrepreneurs.”

Clint Arthur will be the featured speaker at Pittsburgh’s No B.S. Marketing Meeting on Tuesday June 17th, 3-5:30PM at Sigma's Event Center, 1717 Babcock Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15209. Open to the PUBLIC. Call Becky Auer at 412-369-9994 for more information.

A frequent guest on the TODAY SHOW, NBC NY, CBS LA, ABC Chicago, Network TV shows across the country, and the biggest syndicated radio programs, CLINT ARTHUR is considered to be the world’s top expert on the topic of creating Celebrity on Local TV.

Celebrate Strauss' 150th Birthday with the Final Concert of the 2013-14 PSO's Grand Classics Series
June 13-15, 2014  |  Heinz Hall
The 2013-2014 BNY Mellon Grand Classics series will close out the season on the weekend of June 13-15 with a birthday bash for Richard Strauss!  Music Director Manfred Honeck will begin the program with the Suite from Der Rosenkavalier or “The Knight of the Rose,” music from one of Richard Strauss’ most celebrated operas arranged for orchestra. Acclaimed pianist Rudolf Buchbinder will then perform the notoriously virtuosic and rarely performed concert piece, Burleske. The concert will conclude with an orchestral arrangement of Strauss’ one-act opera, Elektra, inspired by Greek mythology.

The Sunday afternoon program will feature an on-stage recognition of the seven musicians who are retiring at the end of the season. The musicians who will be honored for their years of service are Irvin Kauffman (cello; 50 years), Lauren Scott Mallory (cello; 45 years), David Gillis (violin; 42 years), Hampton Mallory (cello; 36 years), Ronald Schneider (horn; 36 years), Gail Czajkowski (cello; 35 years), and Damian Bursill-Hall (flute; 17 years).

Each BNY Mellon Grand Classics concert is part of the Explore & Engage program, which includes pre-concert talks, exhibits, display boards and interactive activities that illuminate the music, composers and the time in which they created. This weekend, Resident Conductor Fawzi Haimor will lead a pre-concert talk from the stage one hour prior to the concert start time.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets, ranging in price from $25.75 to $105.75, can be purchased by calling the Heinz Hall box office at 412-392-4900 or visiting pittsburghsymphony.org.

Lawrence Loh Named Music Director of Symphoria
Lawrence Loh, resident conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, was named music director of Symphoria, a not-for-profit professional symphony orchestra located in Syracuse, N.Y, the organization announced this month. He will join Symphoria at the start of the 2015-2016 season.

“I am truly thankful for the experiences I have had at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra,” says Loh, who has served as resident conductor since 2008. “I am looking forward to the opportunities that await me in Syracuse as I continue to conduct and enjoy the next season with my colleagues and friends at the Pittsburgh Symphony.”

Founded by nearly 50 members of the former Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Symphoria is one of only two co-op orchestras in the U.S. Loh will be the organization’s first full-time music director, serving as primary conductor and providing artistic leadership for the orchestra, including major roles in programming, artistic personnel and outreach.

“Larry has been an integral part of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for the last nine years and we are honored to have had him in Pittsburgh for so long,” says Manfred Honeck, music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony. “His talent and dedication are undeniable. Symphoria is quite fortunate to have him as their new music director. He will do great things in Syracuse.”

Along with his role as resident conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Loh is the music director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, a position he will maintain, and music director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra. He was brought to national attention in February 2004 when he substituted last minute for an ailing Charles Dutoit with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. His association with the Pittsburgh Symphony began as assistant conductor in 2005-2006. He was promoted to associate conductor in 2006-2007 and to resident conductor in 2007-2008. The 2014-2015 season will make his 10th year with the Pittsburgh Symphony.

In May 1998, Loh received his artist diploma in Orchestral Conducting from Yale University, also earning the Eleazar de Carvalho Prize, given to the most outstanding conductor in the Yale graduating class. He received further training at the world-renowned Aspen Music Festival and School and has additional degrees from Indiana University and the University of Rochester. Loh was born in southern California of Korean parentage and raised in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. He and his wife, Jennifer, have a son, Charlie, and a daughter, Hilary.

“It has been an honor to be part of Larry’s growth and success as a conductor, music director and leader,” says James Wilkinson, president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. “We appreciate the opportunity to spend the next year with him as he adjusts to his new role in Syracuse. I do not view this opportunity as his saying ‘goodbye to Pittsburgh’ and I hope he returns often. He will be missed and leaves some big shoes to fill.”

Point Park University-produced movie ‘The Umbrella Man’ to premiere at Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival
The Point Park University-produced feature film, “The Umbrella Man,” will premiere next month at the Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival.  Directed by Michael Grasso, “The Umbrella Man” will be screened at 1:45 p.m., Sunday, June 22, in the Baverso Theater at the Father Ryan Arts Center in McKees Rocks.

“The Umbrella Man” is the story of a father who becomes engrossed with Kennedy assassination conspiracy theories after the death of his 8-year-old son. Set in Pittsburgh, the film deals with one couple’s love, loss, and the survival of their relationship. The film stars Carter Roy and Rachael Carpani as the married couple, as well as Abbie Cobb, Rich Williams, John Amplas and Kevin Crowley.

Point Park University was the driving force in developing the original material written by Michael and Joseph Grasso. The REP, Point Park University’s professional theatre company, mounted a staged production of “The Umbrella Man” in 2011 at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Directed by Robert A. Miller, who also is a producer on the movie, the stage play introduced audiences to the deep human drama in an unprecedented stage experience.

Much of the movie was filmed in the Pittsburgh area last year, providing dozens of Point Park University students a unique opportunity for on-the-job training.  "Michael and I are thrilled that 'The Umbrella Man' has been included in the 2014 Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival.  It was an amazing project with incredible performances and a super talented Pittsburgh crew. We are also proud to have teamed with Point Park University in order to provide their students, recent grads and alumni a chance to work on the production of 'The Umbrella Man' and gain valuable real-world experience on a feature film. It was a true Pittsburgh project, and we had a fantastic experience shooting this film in and around Pittsburgh,” said Joe Grasso, co-writer, co-producer and cinematographer.

Point Park University’s involvement in this projects helps to expand its cinema and digital arts offerings to a wider array of students who have the desire to forge a career in the entertainment industry.

Visit the film’s IMDB page.

24 hours of Innovation: The International Winners from the 7th Edition at ETS!
Written By: Mario Dubois  |  June 03, 2014
The 7th edition of the 24h of innovation organized by the Ecole de technologie superieure (ETS) in Montreal, was held on 27th  and 28th, May 2014. The event, a concept from ESTIA, was one more time a great success with 1,121 participants enrolled in approximately 177 teams located in 28 sites worldwide, including:
3 sites in North America, 9 locations in South America, 8 sites in Europe, 7 sites in Africa, and 1 site in Asia.
All of these participants had a significant cultural experience as they were asked to join students from visited sites and form teams with them to solve one of the 19 challenges proposed by the partners of this event. Thanks to the leaders of various international locations who organized the event on these sites (local to work, participants, logistics) and even accommodation for some pampered!

Platforms, websites, guides and tools - For this 7th edition, the website of the event was completely redone in three languages (French, English and Spanish). In addition, the competition also benefited from a new platform “Agorize” offering a virtual and collaborative dedicated to creating innovative challenges work space. Don’t forget the excitement caused by the 24 hours Facebook site!

Each team produced a video that lasts about 2 minutes explaining their proposalto solve the problematic chosen from the 19 challenges, thus offering creative solutions. Every local jury chose the three best videos on their website before the end of 24 hours.  The best video of each site was selected and submitted to an international jury who chose the best 3 videos and the best continental video for North America,South America, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Imagine, three students from the ETS without 24h experience  (Asmaa Rahali,Mohammad Milad Naderi and Sylvain Dégué), which did not know each others, coordinated by Asmaa, decided to go to West Virginia University in the United States, a new site, to form a team with three participants, Joshua Kurnot, FaresAlblouwy and Kristin Krumenacker who had never heard of the 24h before! How did Asmaa made it? Above all, the team: a game of bowling with his 2 teammates of the ETS to get to know each others. Then a Skype was done before leaving withthe ETS participants for West Virginia to get to know each others and then, the Monday before the event, doing activities on the U.S. site. The chemistry was created, add a dash of creativity and this is the result!

Watch video HERE.

The campaign in Sewickley was an outstanding way for STANDING FIRM to educate a host of employers about partner violence in the workplace and increase the safety of employees, coworkers, and customers. We look forward to other opportunities to partner with communities in Western Pennsylvania!

On April 8, The Sewickley Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted an Awareness and Response Training presented by STANDING FIRM, and generously sponsored by ESMARK. Eighteen participants were asked the question, "Would you know what to do?  Would you know what to say?" if one of their employees was a victim, or perpetrator, of partner violence.  The training provided the employers with the tools they needed to make their workplaces safer.

Coinciding with the Child Heath Association's House Tour in May, STANDING FIRM placed twenty Silent Witness Initiative silhouettes at The Sewickley Public Library, Laughlin Children's Center, and the Sewickley Borough Building.  The silhouettes, from the National Council of Jewish Women Pittsburgh Section, each represent a woman who was murdered by an intimate partner in Allegheny County.  The three groupings of silhouettes served as a powerful reminder that even though partner violence happens at home, it walks through your door at work.

PolicyMic Says Pittsburgh’s a Top City for Millennials
From: Pittsburgh Magazine Blog
Written By: Sam Fatula | June 04, 2014

Take a look around you. Beyond the old smokestacks and steel mills that made Pittsburgh a refuge for the blue-collar workers now lays inspiration for art-conscious and creative millennials.

PolicyMic put together a list of U.S. hotspots for creative 20-somethings, ranking Pittsburgh at No. 12 in the list of 15, which intentionally omitted trustafarian cities New York and Los Angeles. The outlet gave props to the Mattress Factory, Unsmoke Systems’ auditorium gallery and a surge in the electronic music scene, thanks to artists such as Girl Talk, Tobacco and Black Moth Super Rainbow.

Whatever your creative fancy may be, rest assured Pittsburgh is capable of being a reputable hub for your necessities without the outrageous cost of rent for a New York shoebox. Listen to Tobacco's new single for a taste of the awesome electronic music that's coming out of Pittsburgh.

And the Award for Best Dramatic Backstage Performance Goes To…
Review of Noises Off, Pittsburgh Public Theater's June 5th 2014 Performance

For anyone who has ever performed on stage, probably the most memorable moments did not occur on stage, but instead at rehearsals and back stage - where there is typically WAY more drama.  The Pittsburgh Public Theater is wrapping up their 39th season with Michael Frayn’s comical farce “Noises Off,” directed by Don Stephenson.  The O’Reilly Theater was roaring with belly-aching laughter at the opening show on June 5, 2014.

Now most businesses have at least one person that is a pro at stirring up workplace drama.  You know the pretty person who somehow skates by on looks and not much more, the annoying over-analyzer, the dinosaur who is way past their prime and barely contributes, or an egotistical, arrogant, condescending boss?  Well in the world of the arts, specifically theatre, those are ALL practically cast staples only amplified – a lot.  “Noises Off” is a hilarious play full of misinterpretations, innuendo, and big personalities that is a window into the world of live stage acting.  Ok, so it may be slightly over exaggerated, that’s what a farce is… but really, only slightly.

Sunita Pandit
Medical Practice Manager, Dr. Santosh Pandit, MD - Cardiology Specialist
Talkcast Host, Mrs. Cardiology
Sunita is the wife of Dr. Santosh Pandit and is responsible for running his cardiology office. As the wife of a cardiologist, she has become passionate about combating the “perils of the heart.” Constantly in pursuit of preventive care, she is dedicated to recording her husbands observations on what keeps a heart healthy.

As practice manager, Sunita is tasked with maintaining a practice that gravitates toward preventive care, employing a combination of alternative and traditional health practices. She is also establishing a concierge cardiology arm of the practice, including second opinion consultation both national and international.

With Sunita's help Dr. Pandit has collected a comprehensive qualified list of alopathic and other health care providers. Dr Pandit's practice espouses the holistic approach to cardiac health with full input from the patient.

Sunita started Mrs. Cardiology as a Publisher and Fireside Cardiology Chat Consultant to share her personal insight as a medical practice manager, caregiver, and physicians wife.  Most doctors including specialists like
Dr. Santosh and Sunita Pandit
cardiologists have only a prescribed amount of time with a patient. Most patients don't know until after they leave the office that they have "just one more question." A great deal of cardiac care especially prevention can be done through education which a doctor has little time for with the current billing directives that ensnare them. Mrs. Cardiology.com is designed to "stand in the gap." Sunita, Mrs. Cardiology, asks questions, takes notes and follows her husband around with a tape recorder and video camera if necessary in order to disseminate his wisdom to both Dr. Pandit's patients and others. She is truly concerned with "matters of the heart," a major concern as the heart quite simply runs that wondrous machine, the human body.

Sunita is also an expert in caring for a severely handicapped child, adolescent and adult. Her son Sachin was born with severe cerebral palsy and mental retardation. She has designed a home that allows her family to live a normal lifestyle while giving excellent care to her severely handicapped adult son.

As a Publisher, Author, Blogger, Consultant to Caregivers for Individuals with Handicaps, Sunita shares her experiences through Fuzzy Living Inc to people from U.S.A. to India.  As a veteran caregiver of a 32 year old severely handicapped adult son, Sunita has designed a home, caregiver showers, beds and efficient space for a wheel chair bound live at home patient with complete care needs. She disseminates this information for those who prefer to keep their dependents at home and care for them there.  Information includes:
  • In home space design
  • Bed design for easy care
  • Choice of day care or schools
  • Choice of at home care givers to allow families to spend time outside the home
  • Travelling with a severely handicapped individual
  • Shower design for easy care
  • Nutrition and supplementation
  • Caregiver support groups
  • Practical Advice
  • Motivation and Inspiration
  • Choice of Vehicles
  • Transportation Alternatives
  • Making Mealtime Appealing
  • Activities for the Handicapped Individual
  • Things the family can still do together
  • Auto stimulus and family stimulus for the handicapped at home
Sunita has two e-books in progress one on healthy heart care and the other on designing a lifestyle as the caregiver to an individual with handicaps.  Her Specialties:
  • Healthy Nutrition and Cooking for all
  • Lifestyle Creation for Caregivers of relatives with Handicaps
  • Nuskin Distributor of Anti-Aging Products including the Micro Current Hand Held Galvanic Spa, “The Wrinkle Free Diva”

  • But I forgot to ask. . .
  • What if?
  • What else can I do?
  • Explanations of procedures, terms, tests
  • Relaxation Techniques
  • Health Practitioner Choices
  • Practical Cardiac Advice
  • Stress Release Techniques
Nu Skin Biophotonics
As a promoter of healthy living Sunita is also an Executive Distributor for Nu Skin Enterprises and Distributor and Aroma Touch Therapy for Distributor Doterra Essential Oils.
  • Specializing in Age Loc Technology keeping her clients younger looking inside and out without the assistance of plastic or laser surgery.
  • Demonstration, education and distribution of age defying products that remedy challenges with gene clusters inside the skin, not just on the surface of the skin.
  • Scan testing for antioxidant levels in an individuals system with recommendations for antioxidant and supplement balance.
  • Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination.
  • Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile aromatic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue.

Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Presents Porous Sediments an Exhibition Exploring Temporality
March 7 – April 13, 2014  |  707 Penn Gallery
Exhibition Opening and Reception  |  March 7th 2014  |  6 – 8 PM

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the opening of artist Haylee Ebersole’s exhibition Porous Sediments. On view at the Trust’s 707 Penn Gallery March 7–April 13, 2014, the installation features an array of vaporous sculptural objects with surfaces suggestive of skin, soap, ice, and rock. An opening reception will be held Friday, March 7, 2014, from 6–8 p.m., at 707 Penn Gallery.

The objects on display allude both to the cyclical nature of existence and to the slow forming processes of geological structures. Using a variety of techniques—printmaking, drawing, sculpture, and performance—Ebersole engages in temporality, investigating the transformative potential of ideas, materials, and actions through an alchemical approach.

“While the term porous describes the material nature of this work, it also embodies a particular way of thinking and making,” says artist Haylee Ebersole. “In my practice, each process is permeable where the actions and residuals from one become the generative premise for the next.”

5 Interesting and Diverse Startups Completing the 20-Week Accelerator
From our friends at Innovation Works
With AlphaLab’s Winter 2014 cycle finally settling in, I thought this would be a good opportunity to introduce the five interesting and diverse startups currently completing the 20-week program in our Southside-based accelerator. Since 2008, AlphaLab has supported 72 companies over 12 cycles of its program while opening its doors to be a place for entrepreneurs to meet, work, and share ideas. Executive Director Jim Jen has shepherded the program from the onset, and was recently elected to be one of the seven members of the advisory board of the Global Accelerator Network, the International Benchmark of the seed-stage, mentorship-driven accelerator model.

Each AlphaLab class has represented a new evolution of the type of innovative companies being conceived in the region, and the startups in Cycle 12 are no exception.

Conversant Labs is building voice-enabled applications for the blind and visually impaired to help these users experience the same quality-of-life benefits of sighted users.

INKTD is a pain-free, social, cloud-based scheduling platform for tattoo artists, parlors, and customers that strengthens the artist-client relationship by proactively and socially managing appointments and minimizing costly no-shows.

Jetpack Workflow helps small to medium sized accounting firms manage workflow and repetitive processes in an effort to build a paperless office.

Next Gauge is developing smart device-based systems to improve productivity, enhance communication, and reduce costs for commercial truck fleets and drivers.

Tailored Fit is building a hybrid recommendation system for clothing to power online shopping and in-store discovery.

These companies are the first to participate in the program under the direction of Aaron Tainter, who returned to the region in January to join IW as AlphaLab Program Manager. Please check out the sidebar to learn more about Aaron and follow @alphalab for regular updates and announcements relating to the program. Finally, AlphaLab has just begun accepting applications to its Summer 2014 cycle.

NEIGHBORHOOD HI-LIGHTS

Home Sweet Affordable Home the Brewhouse Lofts
From our friends at URA (Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh)
On February 13, 2014 the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA) awarded $4,324,328 in Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) for five City of Pittsburgh affordable housing projects. The tax credits awarded to developers will be used to leverage millions of dollars in funding for building and rehabilitating multifamily housing units offering affordable rents.

The five approved City projects, which are expected to develop 292 residential units, are Larimer/East Liberty Phase I, Garfield Glen Phase II, Penn Mathilda Apartments (Bloomfield/Garfield), Parkside Manor (Brookline) and The Brew House (South Side Flats).

”The City of Pittsburgh and the URA are appreciative of this significant commitment by PHFA for these worthwhile affordable housing developments. We thank PHFA for its continued partnership in helping to rebuild our City’s neighborhoods,” said Tom Cummings, URA housing director.

The proposal for The Brew House was selected by a jury of affordable housing professionals under the PHFA "Innovation in Design" category. The Brew House project will create affordable and market-rate housing opportunities for local artists in a historic building in the South Side neighborhood. The project received special recognition due to its excellence in design, its implementation of current and future energy efficient technologies, and its leveraging of community and capital resources.

ROVING PITTSBURGHER REPORT

Are You a Good Swan or a Bad Swan?

A Review of Swan Lake, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s Feb. 13th 2014 Performance
Written By:  Stephanie Curtice  |  Feb.14, 2014
I have been to many classical performances, yet at this one I found myself as one of those people confused about when to clap. At the symphony, don’t clap between movements. But, at the ballet? I didn’t know. Surprisingly, I had only been to a ballet one other time, as a child when I went for a school field trip to the Nutcracker. This is, of course, another ballet composed by Tchaikovsky. I don’t know why I hadn’t gone more, but I’m glad this was my first “big kid” trip to the ballet. And what better one, than the quintessential Swan Lake? It was beautiful and astonishingly athletic. I was worried that I wouldn’t follow the plot without words or singing, but there was no need. The story line was clear and medium of ballet told it perfectly. I was surprised of how moving the story was. It was truly beautiful.
Julia Erickson

So, being the New Girl in the Burgh but a Kansas girl at heart, I’d have to ask. “Are you a good swan or a bad swan?” To which Odette would reply, “Oh, I’m not a swan at all… I’m a princess.” One could tell from the opening night crowd at the Benedum, Swan Lake is a classic fairy tale. There were many tutu and crown wearing little girls gazing in aw of the swan princess ballerina story. Very cute!

Things I did not know about Swan Lake the ballet:
  • There are a few prescribed sets of choreography for the entire show, and the choreography used in this presentation was by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, circa 1895.
  • There are multiple possible endings for the ballet.
  • Originally Odile was just an enchantress, not a swan/girl like Odette
  • The score most frequently used is actually an arrangement by Tchaikovsky’s brother Modeste and Ricarrdo Drigo.
  • The “Swan Theme” was used in Dracula, the 1931 film starring Bela Legos, and The Mummy, the 1932 film starring Boris Karloff.

Review of Dhirana Feb. 15th 2014 Indian Classical Dance Competition

Written By:  Stephanie Curtice  |  Feb. 16 2014
Stories of the Indian culture and Hindus religion were brought to life Saturday night with lively dancing, bright costumes, and ethnic music. Eight college teams from across the country gathered at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall on the University of Pittsburgh campus for Dhirana 2014, an Indian classical dance competition. The very unique routines included grace like a ballet, transitioning floor work similar to a marching band, dramatic energy akin to Broadway musicals, and multi-level formations that were almost cheerleader-like. The dancing was amazing and unlike anything I have ever seen.

Natya from Rutgers University
Winning 1st place and the Most Traditional Dance Award, Natya from Rutgers University showcased the story of how the Hindu deity Genesha came to have the body of a man and head of an elephant. The way the team created a formation to portray the elephant flapping its ears and trunk was very creative. Second place Pulse from Georgia Tech brought big time intensity of fast moving floor work to the competition with the theme of “Ravana: The Tragic Hero.” Some of the other themes included “Pandora’s Box” by Boston University’s Dheem, “Navarasas (9 Emotions) After the Storm” by Johns Hopkins University’s Shakti, and “Ravanasura’s Fall to Rama” by Penn State’s Natya.

I’d like to say a great big “Thank You!” to Mrs. Cardiology, Sunita Pandit and her husband Dr. Santosh Pandit for not only the invitation to attend this great event, but also sharing their cultural and religious insight throughout the show.

Dandy Dreams
Review of Paul’s Case, Pittsburgh Opera’s Feb. 22nd 2014 Performance
Written By:  Stephanie Curtice  |  Feb. 23, 2014
Paul’s Case at the Pittsburgh Opera
Some things have not changed since 1906. Times are tough, but America still is the land of opportunity. In school, society encourages kids to dream big and work hard to be successful. But young, starry eyed Paul went off the rails at the work hard part. When the young and dumb blaze their own trail and buck the system, there can be stark consequences to pay.

Last night Paul’s Case fittingly made its local debut at the Pittsburgh Opera. The 2013 American opera is half set in Pittsburgh, including the Carnegie Music Hall. Based on the like-titled 1905 story by Willa Cather, composer Gregory Spears and co-libretist Kathryn Walat bring together minimalistic and baroque musical elements to depict Paul’s self-centered life.

The cautionary tale is chock-full of hopes and dreams, disappointment and failure, depicted with dissonant tonal clusters, large oscillating jumps, and repetitive melodic snip-its. The performance featured fine singing, a small chamber orchestra, and very minimalistic production. Of the small 7 person cast, Daniel Curran (Paul) and Alex DeSocio (Father) were my favorites with clear and beautiful singing that was easy to understand. The intimacy of the Pittsburgh Opera in the Strip District was the perfect setting for this opera. The engaging performance will leave you feeling truly connected to Paul and his father, and bewildered by the tragic ending.

Rock Men Lock Up Home Playoff Game with 73-69 Win at Seton Hill
From:  Slippery Rock University
Written By:  Bob McComas

The Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team assured itself of a home Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference postseason tournament home game with a 73-69 win Saturday afternoon over hosting Western Division rival Seton Hill University.

The win improved The Rock’s season record to 19-8 overall and 10-5 in PSAC-West action and guaranteed the Green and White no worse than a fourth-place finish in the division standings.

If The Rock, who hosts nationally-ranked (Pa.) in the regular-season finale Wednesday (8 p.m. tipoff) in Morrow Field House, remains in the No. 4 spot, they will host Seton Hill in a first-round postseason game March 1.

Should The Rock finish third in the division standings, they would host either Pitt-Johnstown or California (Pa.) in first-round action. The latter two teams are currently tied for sixth place and the final PSAC-West postseason berth.

STEELTOWN HERO

Craig "Porky" Chedwick (February 4, 1918 – March 2, 2014) was an American radio announcer known to generations in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as "The Daddio of the Raddio," "The Platter Pushin' Papa," "The Bossman," "Pork the Tork", and a host of other colorful nicknames.

Chedwick was the first white DJ to present a racially diverse audience in a major eastern American city a steady diet of what were, in the summer of 1948, called "race records." The trail he blazed—some 3 years before the more famous Pennsylvania native, Alan Freed, called the music "rock and roll"--was a dual one. Chedwick's original playlist was composed of old R&B and gospel records that he had collected over the years, making him the world's first bona fide oldies DJ. He called the records his "dusty discs," since he would literally have to blow the dust off the 78s before he could preview them at the record stores. Record stores had no demand for the records and would often just give them to Chedwick, or he'd rescue them from bargain bins with what little money he could scrape together.

Years later, radio stations, record companies, and concert promoters would take notice and copy Porky's Chedwick's formula, creating the billion-dollar "oldies" rock and roll nostalgia industry which thrives still today. Porky Chedwick has been recognized on the floor of the United States Senate for his pioneering contributions to radio and rock and roll (and countless times around Pittsburgh, including a day-long 50th anniversary oldies concert called "Porkstock", in 1998 at Three Rivers Stadium) and another one in 1999. He was among a group of radio disc jockeys honored in the "Dedicated to the One I Love" exhibit at Cleveland, Ohio's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, in 1996. He's the only Pittsburgh DJ to be recognized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. At age 88, Chedwick celebrated his 58th anniversary on the air at Hall of Fame's Alan Freed Radio Studio on August 12, 2006. Porky died Sunday, March 2 at the age of 96.

Porky's life spanned two world Wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Even as a bespeckled senior citizen he was known to generations as the King of Oldies here in Pittsburgh.
