Pittsburgh Theaters ‘Shake’ Things Up with Spring Collaboration
Pittsburgh – Point Park University’s Conservatory Theatre Company, The University of Pittsburgh Repertory Theater, Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre and Bricolage are gearing up to present Pittsburgh with four unique Shakespeare productions. The theatres are collaborating to offer the “Spring into Shakespeare” promotion, allowing them to promote one another’s productions and offer cross-promotional discounts.
“Spring into Shakespeare” kicks off with Point Park University’s Conservatory Theatre Company’s unique adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Set in 1849 Alta California, directed by Penelope Miller Lindblom, this production of Romeo and Juliet takes this classic, tragic love story and sets it in a time of perverse greed and violence. Romeo and Juliet runs April 3-13, 2008 at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Tickets are $18 -$20 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 412-621-4445 or online at www.pittsburghplayhouse.com. Patrons who bring a ticket stub from one of the other “Spring into Shakespeare” productions receive $5 off the full ticket price.
Next up, The University of Pittsburgh Repertory Theatre presents William Shakespeare’s Cymbeline April 9–13 and 17–19 in the Cathedral of Learning’s Studio Theatre. This lively and accessible production of the Bard’s rarely performed masterpiece harkens back to Elizabethan playhouses, engaging the audience with humor, swordplay, and live music. Under the direction of Chaya Gordon, and performed by an ensemble cast, Cymbeline is a swashbuckling tale of forbidden love, treachery, and divine intervention. Tickets are $7 for students and $10 for the general public, and can be purchased by calling the box office at 412-624-7529 or online at www.play.pitt.edu.
Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre presents King Lear, directed by Barrymore Award-winner James J. Christy, at The Charity Randall Theatre at the Stephen Foster Memorial in Oakland. King Lear is the classic story about the division of his kingdom amongst his daughters based on their public declaration of love for their father. After terrible suffering, Lear realizes that the daughter he has disinherited was the only one who truly loved him. Featuring Dakin Matthews as Lear and Simon Bradbury as the Fool, King Lear runs April 9-26, 2008. Bricolage rounds out the event with their production of Troilus and Cressida, directed by Jeffrey Carpenter, on July 27th and 28th at 8 p.m. It is the seventh year of the siege of Troy by Agamemnon and his Greeks. The conflict is at a stalemate and dissension is growing in both camps. By turns shocking, uproarious, and impassioned, Troilus and Cressida is a bitterly satirical, thoroughly modern exploration of politics, brutality, vanity, double standards, and doomed love played out against the background of a senseless war which no one seems to know how to bring to an end. The North Hills Ebony Women, Inc., is a support, service and social organization that next year will celebrate 30 years of sisterhood.
This organization is made up of women of similar interest and background, who are devoted to the continuous recognition of African-American heritage, education and unity.
On Friday, February 15, 2008, NHEW co-sponsored along with the North Hills Anti-Racism Coalition, "The Genesis of African Thought", presented by John Ford, a local historian with national renown. Mr. Ford presented on the history and struggle of African Americans and their allies. Additionally, the students of LaRoche's MOSAIC club performed a skit entitled "The Kings and Queens of Africa".
PPL guest from NHEW, Joy Maxberry Woodruff , came to Pittsburgh from Louisville KY in 1979 with husband Dwayne, to whom she has now married for nearly 30 years. Joy currently serves as vice president of North Hills Ebony Women, Inc., is a member of the LaRoche College Board of Trustees, Allegheny County Democratic Committee, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the NAACP Human Rights Dinner Committee, YWCA Study Circles Alumni and a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts. She and Dwayne have also teamed up as honorary chairs or emcees of several events recently including; The Red Cross’ Red Tie Affair, Global Links’ Jammin’ in Jamaica and the Job Corp Annual Dinner. Joy previously hosted “Inside/Outside Pittsburgh”, a public affairs show on WCWB-TV but most recently, she has worked as COO of the family business, Woodruff Enterprises, Inc., a marketing and promotional company. In that capacity, she served as the manager of “Woodruff for Judge Campaign”, resulting in the election of her husband as a judge on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas in November 2005.

Berlin International presented "Keepin It Clean" at the Improv (Waterfront)"Americas Original Comedy Showcase and Restaurant" 166 E. Bridge Street, Homestead, PA 15120 KIC takes place the third Sunday every month at the Improv, Pittsburgh. Keepin’ It Clean will feature a special local/national faith based performance artist each month. On February 16, the host was Christian Rapper/Comedian Minister “Real Deal” Brady Hill and Special guest Dwayne Fulton and Kingdom People.

KIC encourages all spoken word artists, Musicians, Dancers Comedians, Groups, Mimes and Poets from the tri-state area to come and share their gifts on the Open Mic. Just remember to keep it clean. KIC was designed to bridge the gap between denominations and cultures to bring all the Lords people together.

Sage had a successful boxing career well into his 20’s building an impressive record of 239 wins and 5 losses.
In 1990, Sage became production stage manager for the Kuntu Repertory Theater under the direction of Dr. Venell A. Lillie. Sage was also a member of the poetry group “I Dream a World”, an African American history, poetry, and theater group that performed various pieces from different eras in Pittsburgh public schools.
An avid baseball fan, Sage created “The Great Black Baseball Diamond” a theatrical and musical tribute to the players of the Negro baseball leagues.. Sage is one of the top researchers on Negro baseball History (1867-1947) in the US.
Doma Productions and Sound the Alarm Ministries has created a program: Black History and more...an Evening of drama celebrating culture and our God!

Our third guest: Harvey Johnson is currently the Director of Theatre, and an Associate Professor of Theatre at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA. He earned his B.F.A. in Acting from Kent State University and his M.F.A. in directing from Carnegie Mellon University.
Harvey keeps himself busy as Chairman of the Board of Director for Christians In Theatre Arts (CITA), a national networking organization. In addition to his work in academic theatre, he is a freelance director and actor. His directing credits include directing for professional and amateur theatre companies including
Saltworks Theatre Company, The Kuntu Repertory Theatre, The Karamu and Ensemble Theatres of Cleveland, Ohio and The MasterWorks Festival of Winona Lake, IN. Harvey and his family are members of Sound the Alarm Ministries, Aliquippa, PA

Cameroon ,Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Ghana, Liberia, Egypt, Congo, Trinidad Haiti, Jamaica, Ethiopia, Mali, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Zambia, Gambia, Togo, Benin, the USA, and many more. This was a great opportunity to show African culinary diversity while promoting at the same time African Restaurants. David A Burton, spokesperson for Africa Quest was actually our fourth guest born in Greenville South Carolina. He is the Chief operating officer/Senior consultant of “Global Wellness.” David is also an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh, and Point Park University. Twenty-three of Pittsburgh's most notable women will be acknowledged for their accomplishments and contributions to the City of Pittsburgh at the Third Annual Celebrate & Share, Women of Achievement Awards Breakfast on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at The Rivers Club in downtown Pittsburgh.
District Attorney, Stephen A. Zappala, Jr. and wife Mary Zappala will Co-Chair the third annual event, which is traditionally held every March in observance of Women's History Month. Cribs for Kids® was founded in 1998 by Pittsburgh District Attorney Stephen A. Celebrate & Share, an organization founded by Bonnie DiCarlo and JoAnn R. Forrester in 2002,
features the achievements of women, and raises funds for organizations which focus on the needs of women and children in the community. The Women of Achievement Awards Breakfast was established in March during Women's History Month to honor the women of Pittsburgh who contribute so much to our community. This year will feature a special tribute to Women of Achievement past and present in honor of the city of Pittsburgh's 250th Anniversary Celebration.
Cribs for Kids® will be the beneficiary of the proceeds of the 2008 Women of Achievement Breakfast. They were chosen due to their commitment to reducing the incidence of SIDS by supplying cribs for infants and educating parents about practicing safe sleep for their babies. Since the beginning of the campaign that recommends infants sleep on their backs - the "Back to Sleep" campaign - the incidence of SIDS has been cut in half.

Twenty-three of Pittsburgh's most notable women will be acknowledged for their accomplishments and contributions to the City of Pittsburgh at the Third Annual Celebrate & Share, Women of Achievement Awards Breakfast on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at The Rivers Club in downtown Pittsburgh.
District Attorney, Stephen A. Zappala, Jr. and wife Mary Zappala will Co-Chair the third annual event, which is traditionally held every March in observance of Women's History Month. Cribs for Kids® was founded in 1998 by Pittsburgh District Attorney Stephen A.
