Black Grace
Pittsburgh Dance Council presents Black Grace
Pittsburgh Dance Council, a division of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, presents New Zealand dance company, Black Grace, under the direction of choreographer and founder Neil Ieremia, on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 8:00 p.m., at the Byham Theater. Black Grace will present several works on this tour including Pati Pati, Objects and Amata. The program also includes a piece from Ieremia’s new full length work, VVaka*.

Neil Ieremia grew up studying dance, which was not the preferred subject of boys in a society that favored athleticism as masculinity. He pursued his dreams and graduated from Auckland Performing Arts School in New Zealand. There he learned various styles of dance as well as a sense of which genres were more challenging for his Samoan build, like ballet. After working under some of New Zealand’s top choreographers, Ieremia created his own all-male dance company, Black Grace, in 1995.  As the name alludes, the company showcases unique works where dancers combine elements of sleek hard presence and remarkable elegance. Read the entire release here.

Indigo Girls

Indigo Girls at the Byham Theater Grammy winning folk icons the Indigo Girls will be performing at the Byham Theater on Sunday, March 3 at 8:00 p.m. with supporting act The Shadowboxers, a young 5-piece band originally from Atlanta. This will be the first time ever the group will have a full band tour and a chance for fans to hear their music performed in an all-new way. The group will be performing songs from their new record Beauty Queen Sister as well as their classics for one night only.

Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, who make up the Indigo Girls, continue to amaze decades into their careers with their ability to grow and thrive no matter what state the music industry is in. The duo began performing in high school, taking their honest, urgent performing styles to countless clubs and found success in 1989 with the release of their self-titled breakthrough album. The album included their first hit, “Closer to Fine,” which ended up winning them a Grammy in 1990 for Best Contemporary Folk Recording. Throughout the years, the group has earned a devout following in result of their constant touring and dedication to a number of social and environmental causes. Many artists who were popular in the late 1980s have come and gone, but the Indigo Girls have remained strong. Perhaps this is because of their crafty two-women-with-guitars formula, combining their two distinct personalities and songwriting styles to provide tension and an interesting balance. "Sister Act" is a Class Comedy Act
I went to see Sister Act, the Movie in 1992 armed with twelve years of Catholic Education with the Penguins as we called them but more reverently, the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary or IHM. I went with the same armor but a little more jaded and the laughter came more easily as the sting of the stringent years and the smile of the loving care of the sisters of the IHM wore off. I wanted to write this review much sooner but unlike the holy water in the Catholic Church, the bottled water that I took to the musical on opening night did not ward off the flu. Sal’s City  Deli, 245 7th Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15222
This deli is right next to the Benedum, and is extremely affordable. It’s a great stop before a show if you don’t want to spend a fortune. This time we had the Gumbo, which was amazing and filled with Chrizo and Chicken and with a low cost of $7.95. My guest had the Chicken Salad and could not eat it all and of course they don’t let you take your leftovers into the theatre.

Artile Lange, Saturday, April 13, 8pm • Byham Theater
Artie Lange
When Artie Lange joined the permanent cast of The Howard Stern Show in 2001, it was possibly the greatest thing ever to happen in the Stern universe, second only to the show’s move to the wild, uncensored frontier of satellite radio. Lange provided what Stern had yet to find all in the same place: a wit quick enough to keep up with his own, a pathetic self-image to dwarf his own, a personal history that was both heartbreaking and hilarious, and an ingrained sense of self-sabotage that continually kept things interesting. All of these things made Artie Lange a beloved member of the Stern family for 5 years and helped his memoir, Too Fat To Fish, become a New York Times bestseller.

Concert Italia at Pittsburgh Symphony
Hank Walshak and his bride attended and said they were humming Funiculi, Funicula,  all the way home.  For those uneducated in Italian folk songs, the words are:  English lyrics:

Some think the world is made for fun and frolic,
And so do I! And so do I!
Some think it well to be all melancholic,
To pine and sigh; to pine and sigh;
But I, I love to spend my time in singing,
Some joyous song, some joyous song,
To set the air with music bravely ringing
Is far from wrong! Is far from wrong!
Harken, harken, music sounds a-far!
Harken, harken, music sounds a-far!
Funiculì, funiculà, funiculì, funiculà!
Joy is everywhere, funiculì, funiculà!

Steeltown Heroes: A Teen One!

Amber Liggett is a junior in high school, a member of the National Honor Society and the international Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Amber Liggett
Amber won the Shyne award for the business category for Amber's Amazing Animal Balloons this August and Black Enterprise's Teenpreneur of the year in May! On New Year's Eve, she will be at 5th Avenue Place doing balloons for First Night.

She is also in the process of further developing her business and hiring young people to work with her. You can see Amber’s creations at wwwambersballoons.com, on her Facebook and on Twitter @ambersballoons.

In her freshmen year in high school, Amber wrote a bill that would go on to become HB 1535 in the PA State House. She decided to write this bill after a personal experience in which she was being stalked and harassed by an adult and sought protection under the law with no success.
She could not get a restraining order from her stalker because in her case the stalker was a stranger. In our state you have to be related to the person, or have had an intimate relationship with them to get a PFA or restraining order from them. In 38 other states she would have been protected, but not in Pennsylvania. Amber’s bill would change that.

Her bill will allow those who don’t meet the current “relationship nexus” to obtain a restraining order. It covers a variety of different offenses including stalking, harassment, kidnapping, sexual assault, and more. State Representative Harhai, introduced her bill to the legislature in 2010.

Fast forward three years later to WGF’s GirlGov program 2012.Amber’s bill was still sitting in committee. She learned at GirlGov about the importance of advocacy which is a skill many other programs leave out. If you want to make a difference, and get results, then you need advocacy skills.

WGF has helped Amber personally with her bill in many ways. WGF is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure women have the support they need to overcome barriers. She is so thankful for having the support of WGF and the GirlGov girls behind her bill. They are helping Amber to develop a strategy to reintroduce her bill into the legislature this year, and will be with her 100% every step of the way. And Amber will be calling on all of you to engage in advocacy efforts with her to help this bill become law before she graduates high school in June 2013! She supports WGF because of their commitment to ensuring that women have the skills, opportunities, and support they need to reach their goals.

Please consider making an online donation to WGF before the end of the year. WGF will use your gift to support the efforts of women and girls like Amber working to advance women’s rights at the policy level in our state. The support of WGF, the GirlGov girls, and donors like you means so much to Amber.

Roving Pittsburgher Report

Manheim Steamroller
If you were a first timer showing up at the Mannheim Steamroller Christmas Concert at the Benedum Center on December 11 or 12 looking for traditional Christmas Carols played by an orchestra, well you got a pleasant surprise. This was like no other concert I have ever been to. Just the level of talent and diversity of instruments of each member of the group was truly inspirational.

The multimedia presentation behind the music was revolutionary in its ability to keep the audience’s mind planted solely on the theme for each rendition. The comments after the show on the way out were, “Where were all of those sounds coming from?” I mean the wind instrument echoed a choir and it was a bit confusing when you didn’t see one on stage or on the screen behind it. We sat in a row with a young couple who had five girls with them aging from 6 to 11 and they were as spellbound as the adults. Read the full review here.

Burgatory: 300 McHolme Dr.,Pittsburgh, PA 15275, 412.809.9400
There are plenty of places to get a good burger, but not many to get a great burger. You can get a great burger here. But to me, that was not the highlight, the highlight was the homemade chips and the loaded nachos with everything but the kitchen sink on them. They are listed as a starter but are a meal in themselves. Also, the sides are amazing, especially the quinoa salad. There is plenty of local color if you like to read signs and don’t’ know what to talk about to your dinner partner.

What a great place to have a party, over 200 guests attended in one of the private banquet rooms at Latitude 40. The place includes a game room with over 80 interactive video & redemption games, the Axis Bar with stage and dance floor and the 360 Grille, an upscale, casual contemporary-American restaurant that features fire-grilled entrees to the freshest seafood and hand-crafted salads.

We were able to see videos of all of the previous parties on the amazing huge screen at the front of the room. There were also strolling performers and as always the Latitude 40 buffet, appetizers and dessert were amazing.
