New Roving Pittsburgher Reviews!
Pittsburgh's debut of Footloose brings to stage  idyllic, youthful and perpetually  poignant  teenage strife with a musical score that is toe tapping and finger snapping.  So long as there are teenagers, there will be rebellion, a question of  authority and a free- spiritedness that teeters between innocence and blind stupidity for years at a time.
Review by JoAnn Forrester
Good theater, a play well acted, leaves an impression with the audience for a couple of hours, or maybe  a day or two.   A great play well acted,  stays on one's mind for days and often leaves haunting lingering questions.   Such as it is with the PICT and their presentation of Waiting for Godot.
The Baker Street Solution, Matthew Tomsho

Once upon a time there was business consultant by the name of JoAnn R. Forrester who worked very hard for her small business clients, raised them lots of money ($40 million), taught hundreds of classes, seminars and workshops to thousands of clients and students, won many awards for her accomplishments and helped her clients gain national recognition for their accomplishments  and even had her own podcast show, The Empress of Biz, Listen, Learn, Prosper and had helped many organizations that served women and children…something was missing…and she was beginning to become  bored and sad…very sad.  She was tired of doing cost analysis, business plans and having to joust with bankers to help her clients….she wanted some fun, she wanted to play and just be happy.  So she wrote a children's book called the Gift of Holiday Valley.

LA COUR DES MIRACLES AN INTERACTIVE ROBOTIC INSTALLATION

July 11 – September 7, 2014 | Wood Street Galleries | 601 Wood Street
Exhibition Opening & Reception | July 11, 5:30 – 9 p.m.
Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the opening of La Cour des Miracles (The Court of Miracles) by artists Bill Vorn and Louis-Philippe Demers. The exhibition is on view at Wood Street Galleries July 11–September 7, 2014. An opening reception takes place during the Trust’s quarterly Gallery Crawl Friday, July 11, 2014, from 5:30–9 p.m.
La Cour des Miracles is an interactive robotic installation that reacts to viewers’ presence in a multimedia environment. This installation follows the artists’ approach to creating fictitious spaces designed for machine populations and cybernetic organism societies, in which viewers become both explorers and intruders. The title of the exhibition originates from the slum districts of Paris—cour des miracles—in which begging was a means of survival

Title ‘THE MUSIC OF JOHN WILLIAMS’ RETURNS TO HEINZ HALL ON JULY 19
It’s back! “The Music of John Williams” returns to Heinz Hall for a one-day-only performance on July 19 at 2:30 p.m. at Heinz Hall.
Williams, who has orchestrated some of Hollywood’s most iconic movie scores — “Harry Potter,” “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones,” to just name a few — is celebrated during this rousing Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra concert, which features Williams’ movie music magic, audience participation and hijinks from admitted Williams fanboy Resident Conductor Lawrence Loh.
With solos performed by Pittsburgh Symphony principal harp Gretchen Van Hoesen and principal contrabassoon James Rodgers, this popular concert sold out its four-night run during the 2013-2014 PNC Pops season.

The symphony also is looking for volunteers to dress as characters from movies with a John Williams score, such as “Harry Potter,” “Indiana Jones,” “Star Wars,” “E.T.” or “Superman,” and greet and pose for photos with patrons who attend the concert. They will receive two free tickets to the concert for participating. Anyone interested should email a photo of themselves in costume to Rachel Howard, rhoward@pittsburghsymphony.org, along with contact information by June 30.

PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST PRESENTS
SOME BEGINS
STORIES OF TELEPATHY AND MIRACULOUS OBJECTS

July 11 – August 24, 2014 | 707 Penn Gallery | 707 Penn Avenue

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the opening of Some Begins, an exhibition exploring the associative and myth-making capacities of objects and text from the collaborative practice of artists Meg Shevenock and Jamie Boyle. The exhibition is on view July 11–August 24, 2014, at 707 Penn Gallery. An opening reception takes place Friday, July 11, 2014, from 5:30–9 p.m., during the Trust’s quarterly Gallery Crawl throughout the Cultural District.

Some Begins, a collection of primarily sculptural works that exemplify what Shevenock and Boyle call their “belief in the crazy spirit world of objects,” marks the first exhibition devoted solely to their collaborative practice. Only very briefly, over the past seven years, have the artists lived in the same city. This physical distance between them serves as a crucial layer to their belief in the power of objects, their artistic process, and the works on view in Some Begins.

ROVING PITTSBURGHER REPORT

St Mary's of the Mount

This is a must see for anyone visiting Pittsburgh, St Mary's of the Mount on Mt. Washington is an absolutely breathtaking piece of architecture overlooking Mt. Washington and right on Grandview Avenue.  The ivory altar and stained glass windows alone are worth the trip.  But the best part of the visit was the congregation.  They had a "signing choir" for the hearing imparied and the priest who celebrated the mass was an impeccably dynamic speaker but he also signed part of his sermon and many prayers.  This church and its congregation was truly an inspiration.

As WPXI Target 11 investigator Rick Earle stated on air this month, “A dangerous and dirty problem is piling up in a greenway in Pittsburgh’s Brookline neighborhood. “ Allegheny CleanWays and I, with help from WPXI, working to bring attention to a very large illegal dump site, which has been used for at least the last 40 years.
Luckily, Allegheny CleanWays volunteers have been working on cleaning up the site regularly since November of last year. One of the biggest dumpsites in the City of Pittsburgh, the area is both an eyesore and a health hazard. Volunteers have uncovered a rusted car axle, refrigerators, air conditioners, an old television set, and literally over 2,000 tires from the dump… and they’re still going! To keep area looking good after clean-up has finished, the group plans to install video cameras which can catch illegal dumpers in the act.
“It's an enormous problem, especially in our greenways and woodlands, the places that should be pristine,” said Myrna Newman of Allegheny CleanWays.

Allegheny CleanWays was formed in 2000 to assess the extent of illegal dumping in Allegheny County. In the past 14 years, they have been instrumental in engaging and partnering with community groups to remove dumps and debris from vacant lots, greenways, streets, and riverbanks. To learn more about their work in Brookline, watch or read Rick Earle’s story HERE
