The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, known for its artistic excellence for more than 119 years, is credited with a rich history of the world’s finest conductors and musicians, and a strong commitment to the Pittsburgh region and its citizens. Past music directors have included Fritz Reiner (1938-1948), William Steinberg (1952-1976), Andre Previn (1976-1984), Lorin Maazel (1984-1996) and
Joel Frahm, photo by Tony Williams
Mariss Jansons (1995-2004).  This tradition of outstanding international music directors was furthered in fall 2008, when Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck became music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony. The orchestra has been at the forefront of championing new American works, and gave the first performance of Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1 “Jeremiah” in 1944 and John Adams’ Short Ride in a Fast Machine in 1986. The Pittsburgh Symphony has a long and illustrious history in the areas of recordings and radio concerts. As early as 1936, the Pittsburgh Symphony broadcast on the airwaves coast-to-coast and in the late 1970s it made the ground breaking PBS series “Previn and the Pittsburgh.” The orchestra has received increased national attention since 1982 through network radio broadcasts on Public Radio International, produced by Classical WQED-FM 89.3, made possible by the musicians
Sean Jones
of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. With a long and distinguished history of touring both domestically and overseas since 1900 — including 36 international tours to Europe, the Far East and South America—the Pittsburgh Symphony continues to be critically acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest orchestras.

Founded in 1984, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a non-profit arts organization whose mission is the cultural and economic revitalization of a 14-block arts and entertainment/residential neighborhood called the Cultural District. The District is one of the country’s largest land masses “curated” by a single nonprofit arts organization. A major catalytic force in the city, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is a unique model of how public-private partnerships can reinvent a city with authenticity, innovation and creativity. Using the arts as an economic catalyst, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust has holistically created a world-renowned Cultural District that is revitalizing the city, improving the regional economy and enhancing Pittsburgh’s quality of life. Thanks to the support of foundations, corporations, government agencies and thousands of private citizens, the Cultural Trust stands as a national model of urban redevelopment through the arts. Orlando in the Henry Heymann Theatre
If you have already seen Waiting for Godot, you may have noticed some new faces in the lobby before the show. That is because downstairs in The Henry Heymann Theatre, UnSeam'd Shakespeare Co. is producing Orlando, based on Virginia Woolf's novel.

This charmingly witty adaptation takes audiences on a voyage across time, across Europe and across genders. Follow Orlando, a poet who lives for 400 years, from the time of Queen Elizabeth I into the present day. He spends the first half of his life as a man before waking one day to discover the he has become a she! In her stylish adaptation for the stage, Sarah Ruhl exposes the challenges of coming to terms with who we are: the inner struggles of self-definition and the challenge of reconciling the outside world one lives in and the world inside one's self.

PICT veteran Jonathan Visser, who recently played Captain Neville St. Claire in The Crucifer of Blood, stars in this production that runs through June 21. Click here to buy tickets.

The Takeaway: Make With Love - An Artist/Curator Project Incorporating Amateur Artwork
July 11 – August 1, 2014  |  937 Gallery - 937 Liberty Avenue, 2nd floor
Exhibition Opening & Reception  |  July 11, 5:30 – 9 p.m.
The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust announces the opening of The Takeaway: Made With Love, an exhibition of nearly 100 amateur artworks handpicked from thrift store collections across several states. Throughout the run of the exhibition, visitors are able to enter into a free lottery for a chance to take home their favorite piece from the show. The exhibition, organized by Robert Raczka, is on view July 11–August 1, 2014, at 937 Liberty Avenue, second floor. An opening reception takes place Friday, July 11, 2014, from 5:30–9p.m., during the Cultural Trust’s quarterly Gallery Crawl throughout the Cultural Distract.

Add caption

Raczka purchased the exhibition’s artworks—paintings, hand-knit afghans, handmade ceramics, and objects
crafted in wood—for their aesthetic appeal and all-around interest, though they are artworks not generally presented in a fine art context. Among the works included are painted landscapes, pet portraits, spiritual imagery, and a wood mosaic Mayan calendar.  Raczka uses the exhibition budget, generally reserved for shipping and materials, to buy the art in thrift stores while exercising his curatorial eye. He sees the distribution of the artwork to the audience through a free lottery as a gift from the gallery as well as from himself.

“I have a genuine appreciation for amateur art at its unselfconscious best, and I wanted to share that with the audience,” says curator Robert Raczka. “I had noticed that when someone is in an art gallery contemplating a purchase, they really look closely and think about the art. I have found that if the audience feels that they might end up taking the art home, they consider it more deeply.”   At the conclusion of the exhibition, Raczka will select the winners at random, who are notified and able to pickup their artwork at the closing party Friday, August 1, 5:30–9 p.m., with an additional pick-up time Saturday, August 2, 1–5 p.m.

This is the forth in a series of exhibitions of thrift store art, the first held at Future Tenant in 2008, and combines Raczka’s roles as artist and curator. For these exhibitions, he has been incorporating ideas artists have been working with in relational aesthetics, or the practice of artist-constructed social experiences where the artist becomes the facilitator rather than the focal point, such as Rirkrit Tiravanija’s untitled project in which he cooked and served food in the Carnegie International, and Tino Sehgal’s “The Progress” at the Guggenheim where visitors were engaged in a series of conversations about progress. Similar to these projects, Raczka’s lottery is designed to reconsider and make use of art’s social and institutional context and to create a nontraditional social interaction between artist/curator, the gallery, and the audience.

Robert Raczka is a Pittsburgh-based artist, writer, and curator, and he was previously a gallery director of 20 years. He earned an MFA in photography from the University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. His artwork is in the form of photography, collage, and exhibitions incorporating found objects to engage with popular culture and taste, the public communications of advertising and marketing, and the often-tenuous connection
between representation and reality. In 2013, Raczka curated Crowdsourced at SPACE, featuring 12 artists who included public input—either directly or through suggestions—into their artworks. Raczka’s art criticism often appears in the Pittsburgh City Paper. He is emeritus professor of art at Allegheny College, Meadville, and he recently taught the graduate studio art seminar at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA.

About 937 Gallery  -  937 Gallery is a project of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. The multiuse exhibition space is located at 937 Liberty Avenue in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District. Gallery Hours: Saturday, 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; Sunday, 12–5 p.m. The gallery is free and open to the public.

WDVE Presents the Music of Queen with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
June 24, 2014  |  7:30 PM  |  Heinz Hall
The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will rock you with “The Music of Queen” on June 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Heinz Hall.  Featuring conductor/arranger Brent Havens’ vision of classic rock coupled with classical music and the soaring vocals of Brody Dolyniuk and a full rock band, this concert wraps the familiar sounds of Queen’s iconic tunes with the support of a full orchestra and the visuals and energy of a live rock concert.

Fans of Queen and Freddie Mercury will enjoy songs from many of their albums — forgotten gems as well as popular hits — including “Classic Queen,” “A Night at the Opera,” “Heart Attack” and “A Kind of Magic,” as Dolyniuk and his band stay true to the originals while the orchestra adds something special to the performances. “Bohemian Rhapsody” is just the start of the fun in this tribute to one of the best bands that ever rocked.

The band includes Havens and Dolyniuk (guitar/vocals) as well as Dan Clemens (bass/background vocals), Powell Randolph (drums/background vocals), George Cintron (guitar/background vocals) and Bart Kuebler (keyboards/background vocals). Havens and Dolyniuk were last seen at Heinz Hall during summer 2013 for “The Music of Led Zeppelin.”

ROVING PITTSBURGHER REPORT

Tartine
Written By: Joanne Quinn-Smith
In the center of West End Village a little bit of France with a lot of attention to detail in both décor and the music played while you dine.  Open for breakfast and closing at 2 PM, 7 days a week. A great cozy nook meeting and eating place close to Greentree, Downtown, Mt. Washington and Station Square.
An amazing breakfast of a type of eggs benedict with spinach and bacon and grilled local bakery bread. Desserts are also amazing, imported from Montreal!

Samuel Beckett’s Sardonic Lament on the 20th Century, "Waiting for Godot"
From: Roving Pittsburgher Report
Written By: JoAnn R. Forrester, Empress of Biz.  |  June 11, 2014
Good theater, a play well acted, leaves an impression with the audience for a couple of hours, or maybe  a day or two.   A great play well acted,  stays on one’s mind for days and often leaves haunting lingering questions.   Such as it is with the PICT and their presentation of "Waiting for Godot”.

Samuel Beckett's play, Waiting for Godot, is  purposefully designed to tease, taunt and torment an audience
James FitzGerald, Martin Giles
with its dark humor and confusing plot laced with  sardonic laments of its main characters, Estragon and Vladimir.  Two friends, caught  in their own world of forgetfulness and sometimes shared memories.  They wait...they complain, they wait...they're hungry, they wait...they're bored...they wait.   They wait cemented together in their refusal to break free of the interminable waiting.
Then aha...a break comes-Pozzo, ( Alan Stanford) the pompous “rich man” carrying a whip and loaded with the burden of his self importance and Lucky (Ken Bolden),the human mule, dying inch by inch from the lack of expectation.  The interplay between the two created a strong reaction in me.  I wanted to stand up and yell, “Stop being his human mule, his jackass,  kick him, bite him, leave him wallowing in his own self indulgence.”  Great acting gentlemen.

Living Legends Jazz Series: Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President of Education and Community Engagement for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust

Janis Burley Wilson, Vice President of Education and Community Engagement says, “It was a thrill to book these great nights of jazz. Joe Harris played with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, toured with Quincy Jones big band in the early 1960’s. According to many, Jimmy Ponder is one of the best jazz guitarists of that era in the world. We’re so fortunate to have these artists living and working in Pittsburgh, and it’s time to honor them.”

In conjunction with “Living Legends,” there will be a photography exhibit at 709 Penn Gallery from April 4-May 2, featuring the work of Nathan Tritter and jazz photos by Teenie Harris, courtesy of the Carnegie Museum. The opening reception on Saturday, April 5, 5-7pm will include a performance and talk about the 100th anniversary of the Black Musician’s Union.

Janis Burley Wilson also talks about cultural education that goes on because of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
