ROVING PITTSBURGHER REPORT

Pyrofest at Heartwood Acres by Angel Thomas and Dean Quinn
If you thought the Fourth of July had grand fireworks, after seeing the works at the Pyro Fest, you would agree that these astounding works put them to shame. These were not just the average works you see every year, but imagine seeing fireworks that went along with some percussion, classic music from Disney movies, and silence from the crowd in awe. The "Phantom Fireworks" showed out with the introductory demo which involved a lot of uncanny lights and sounds that put you on the edge of your seat, or picnic blanket for that matter. Along with some great music by Pennsylvania's own "The Clarks" band from Fayette County, games for the kids and great food, this is a night to remember. Any family would enjoy the festivities the Pyro fest offered as well as having that memory of a family fun night!

Mint, 3033 Banksville Rd., Pittsburgh, Pa. 15216, Dormont Area
For my friend Meenakshi Kapoor’s last night in Pittsburgh before returning to India after 14 years here in the Burgh, we went to one of her favorite Indian Restuarants, Mint. Mint is South Indian, North Indian and Indo Chine cuisine.

She had not been there since her trip to India in the Fall and neither had I so we were both pleasantly surprised to see it newly remodeled and the food was amazing. Now while I love Indian food, it is difficult for me to eat it as hot as most Indians like it. I like that they give you a choice of 1 to 10. We had their standard lentil soup, Amti and Chicken Hakka Noodles. My first time for these, what a delicious surprise and Aloo Gobi Parata which is wheat bread stuffed with cauliflower and potatoes. Also my first time for this. For those of you who are interested, the remodel includes a buffet bar, which will soon be an addition to their usual fare.

Staycation Cocktails by the River at the Sheraton Station Square
Jo Ann Forrester and Karen Shannon from Meadville have decided that sitting by the river having cocktails, reading in the lobby and watching the boats, or shopping in the Station Square Shops was a great Memorial Day weekend.

Ladies Who Network By Classic Events
What a wonderful event. Jo Ann Forrester of Empressof Biz and I were honored right along with Darieth Chisholm and Lynn Hayes Freeland. The networking and vendors were amazing. And the vendors, well I don’t know where you would find more delightful shopping. We sampled Ro’s German Chocolate Cupcakes and chocolate covered Strawberries. We met a 12 year old couturier designer and oh, the jewelry and travel trips and opportunities to meet some amazing women and few good men. Great job, hats off to Ralph Watson of Classic Events.

STEELTOWN HERO
Meet Armani Dolby
Hello, my name is Armani Dolby. I am a 12 year old Couture Fashion Designer. I started drawing when I was 6 years old. My designs are very unique and full of color. I have some designs that are as simple as everyday wear whereas, others would be considered attire fit for events such as the Presidents Ball or the Red Carpet.
Armani Dolby

I hope that one day I can design an outfit for my favorite artist, Queen of Hip-Hop, Mary J Blige. I love her style and enjoy her music. I like the lyrics in her songs. I really want to meet her some day. I am a 6th grade Honor Roll student at Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA). I attend Rodman Street Missionary Baptist Church, where I am a member of the “Rodman Street Steppers." I also am a cheerleader for the North Shore Stallions.

In my spare time, when I am not designing new outfits, I write short stories, poetry, and songs. I like to make dances up while listening to Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys, and Jamie Foxx. I plan to have my designs sold in my own boutique “Nejor’s” by the time I am 13. In the future I want to travel to the places known for fashion. I want to be included as one of the elite fashion designers. I look forward to the day when I can open my own store. I have several charitable dreams. At the top of my list, I want to open up a homeless shelter and provide a safe place for the homeless to get warm, clean, and fed. Secondly, I plan to make annual monetary donations to local schools to help with the purchase of books, uniforms, lunches, field trips, and school supplies. And lastly, I want to hold a yearly fashion show with a portion of the proceeds to go to a local charity or non-profit organization.

Our company is based on the belief that our customers' needs are of the utmost importance. Our entire team is committed to meeting those needs. As a result, a high percentage of our business is from repeat customers and referrals.
We would welcome the opportunity to earn your trust and deliver you the best service in the industry.

PPL LOCAL SPORTS

From the Pittsburgh Courier
BRANDON SIMMONS
Baron “B.B.” Flenory remains a legendary figure in high school basketball, in college basketball and to those in western Pennsylvania. Flenory was a Parade All-American as a senior at Valley High School. He was a star player at Duquesne University. He is in the WPIAL Hall of Fame, Pennsylvania Basketball Hall of Fame and is now happy to pass the torch.
Brandon Simmons, Flenory’s grandson, is ranked as the number 12 safety in the country and is one of the top-200 prospects nationally. He is a defensive back at Timberview High School, which is in the Mansfield, Texas, School District. He is only a junior, but has received more than 40 scholarship offers from colleges across the country. Texas, Notre Dame, Ohio State, UCLA, LSU and Harvard are among the schools that have offered scholarships.

Simmons, became Stanford University first commitment of the 2014 class and is the Cardinals first signee from Texas since the 2012 class.
Brandon Simmons

“A friend of mine from Texas Ty Mongomery plays for Stanford, so they were always high on my list,” said Simmons. “I wanted to major in Forensic or Business and Stanford has a great Business School.”

Among numerous qualities about the university, Simmons said the campus and coaching staff put Stanford over the top.

“I heard the campus was beautiful but it surpassed all my expectations,” Simmons said. “Coach (David) Shaw is really laid back and doesn’t lose his calm, but when I told him I was committing he jumped up and hollered.”

For years Flenory’s proudest memories was his 81 point game in junior high. A performance that led to an appearance in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd.”

“I’m more proud of my grandson than anything that I ever done,” said Flenory. “He is just as strong academically as he is athletically. For him to have scholarship offers from schools like Harvard and Stanford. I couldn’t be more proud.”

Brandon’s father (Kashann Simmons) is a football coach and he virtually grew up with a football in his hand.

Indeed, legend has it that when Brandon was only a few months old, his father placed a football in his crib, thereby setting him on the gridiron path.

Brandon is a straight-A student but he is a lot more than Sir Isaac Newton in shoulder pads and helmet.

Simmons plays like a combination of his two idols: big hitter Troy Polamalu of the Pittsburgh Steelers and ball hawk Ed Reed from the Baltimore Ravens.

As a sophomore he racked up 100 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 interceptions, 1 forced fumble, and 15 passes broken up. He had nearly 100 tackles as a junior.

Simmons is truly a leader focused and determined to be the best he can be.

“I wanted to commit early so that I can focus on my senior year,” said Simmons. “As a team we didn’t do very well last year. This year we return a lot of leaders. We have been working hard this spring and we are determined to have a successful season.”

The U.S. Army High School All-American Bowl has become the “can’t miss” game for football fans across the country and Simmons has already been selected to play in next years’ game. He will be featured in the same defensive backfield as Gateway’s Montae Nicholson.

Did Simmons ever consider playing at the University of Pittsburgh?

“Pitt was on my wish list, but they didn’t show me any love,” said Simmons. “Pitt is a great school and has a tremendous medical program. I’m 110 percent committed to Stanford, but Pitt would have been very high on my list.”

With Steelers safeties Polamalu and Ryan Clark getting long in the tooth, maybe in four years Pittsburgh can show Brandon Simmons “some love” on draft day.

NEIGHBORHOOD HI-LIGHTS

Congratulations to new mayor Bill Peduto
Last night, we made history, and today, we are a step closer to a New Pittsburgh.

Our New Coalition was built from the ground up. It encompasses ordinary Pittsburghers from North, South, East and West. Pittsburghers from labor to environmentalists, from women's groups to youth, from the LGBT community to a broad base of elected officials. We built our support from every race, gender and corner of this city.

And, we could not have done this without you.

You who knocked on doors, who phone-banked, who donated, who spoke to your family and friends whether in person or through social media. You took the power back from those who have run this city for decades and put it squarely back in the community and the people who live in it.

You saw the potential that Pittsburgh has and know that we have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to build our great city once again.

Thank you.

Together, we will make Pittsburgh the city we know it can be.

Bill

Women’s Day of Action for Health Care
Women across Pennsylvania are calling their legislators today, urging them to accept the Medicaid expansion and extend health care coverage to hundreds of thousands of women and families. The time to act is NOW. Women’s lives are on the line.

Our lawmakers have a chance to accept billions in federal funds to expand Medicaid to people making up to 138% of the federal poverty level ($31,800 for a family of four). That means women who work as hairdressers, home health care workers, servers, and other hourly jobs will finally get the coverage they need.

Around one in ten adult women in Pennsylvania lack health insurance, even though many of them have jobs and families who are dependent on them to stay healthy. Starting in 2014, 7 million women will be newly eligible for Medicaid coverage under the expansion, including over 200,000 Pennsylvania women alone. Stand up for women, stand up for Medicaid expansion - Call Today!

Roving Pittsburgher Report

Matteo’s Italian Restaurant, Right on Brookline Blvd. in Brookline

What a delightful friendly place. As we walked in the door, customers greeted us and told us how wonderful the food was. Then another one sat down with us and introduced himself. There are only about eight tables and we decided it was like eating in your grandmother’s kitchen.
Matteo's

The owner, Francesco, who is from Calabria, Italy and his wife told us they hear that a lot. Nanno Granny and I had to hear about it from two Boomerangers from Virginia who own Beach Treats down at the end of Brookline Blvd., don’t forget to stop there when you visit Mateo’s. We had homemade ravioli, gnocchi and beans and greens. Sure tasted like my Markajan Grandmother made all of them, so I am not sure that the Calabrese have a lock on the recipes. Go early before the dinner crowd because we have a suspicion that it is hard to get a seat once the locals arrive. When in doubt, PPL says, eat where the locals eat. BTW, don’t try to find the website, they don’t have nor do they need one.

Pittsburgh International Children’s Festival
It just filled up the Schenley area of Oakland right by the Carnegie Library with Petting Zoo and Exopolis. Petting Zoo was my granddaughter’s favorite. Also will be showing a video on front page of PPL Mag later this week of my granddaughter and a crew of other five to seven year olds commandeering the stage as steel drummers played Carribean music.

Also from the same stage later we hear wonderful live storytelling from Mary Morgan Smith where she told a story with song and sign language added and had both children and adults mesmerized and participating.

7th St. Grill

130 7th St  Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15222
Don’t know why we never visited here before since it is so close to the Benedum. Now that Tambellini’s across the street is closed, it is a nice choice for mid range restaurant with nice entrees sandwiches, appetizers and salads. Choices we made were all outstanding: Grilled Vegetable Salad, Crab Cake Sandwich, Chicken Quesadilla, and Buffalo Chicken Wrap. The desserts from Signature were also amazing: Tiramisu and flourless chocolate cake, yum. Also outdoor patio dining under the Katz Plaza trees is very relaxing and even though there is a bar, we found it kid friendly thanks to our waiter Ryan who was very accommodating.

Cocktails and Cuisine
What a wonderful way to spend a Friday evening! The company was delightful, met some wonderful people we would not have met, and the Woodlands at Bradford Woods is a beautiful bucolic setting with nice amenities. We particularly enjoyed the amazing gourmet nachos from the Saucy Pig and the beet salad from the Walnut Grill. Music by Antoinette was as always both delightful but low key enough for conversation. Wonderful event. Suggest you attend next year, the live auction event, though we did not bid, was very exciting. Also TechnoGranny won a small plane ride around Pittsburgh on a raffle ticket. Something for everyone. Thanks to Debra Dion Kirske for inviting me.

High School and University News

From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Clairton High robotic team raises money to go to national competition Thanks to the generosity of strangers -- some as far away as California and Florida -- the five-member robotics team at Clairton High School will be able to attend the National BotsIQ Competition in Indianapolis this weekend.

The team members were crowned the grand champions of the Western Pennsylvania competition held last month at California University of Pennsylvania. That earned them the chance to compete at the national level, but a lack of funds threatened their ability to attend. Clairton, one of the smallest and poorest school districts in the state, did not have the funds to cover the minimum $4,000 cost for transportation, fees, lodging and meals for the competition.

The students fundraising had stalled at about $1,400 late last week. But after an article about their plight in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Saturday, more than 100 individuals have sent checks to the team, creating a $30,000 pot, enough to cover the costs of travel to the competition and plenty of extra money for spare parts that are generally needed for replacement during the competitions.

Although a final tally of funds has not been computed, it's expected there will be enough left over to cover the club's costs next school year and perhaps expand it to include middle school students, said Dennis Beard, an industrial arts teacher who is the Robotics Club sponsor.

To date, the students have raised most of their own funds to build the ankle-high robots and take them to competitions.

"It's amazing the support that we've seen," Mr. Beard said. "Some of the people have been alumni, some are ex-teachers and some had fathers who were teachers here in the building and it just tugged at their hearts."

He said several companies have offered to bring the students to their sites for tours next year and some have offered financial support.

Among them is Aerotech Inc., whose vice president for sales and marketing, Stephen Botos, mailed the team a check for $2,000 along with words of encouragement for the national competition and an invitation to visit the firm's O'Hara factory to tour and learn about careers in robotics and automation. Mr. Beard said the checks ranged from individuals donating $25 to a firm that donated $2,500. He said many of the notes that came with the donations indicated that people were unaware that Clairton was a school with academic successes in addition to its athletic successes. "A lot of people in the area said they were not aware that Clairton had a robotics team and now they are reaching out to help us," Mr. Beard said.

He said the students were touched as they helped to open mail and read the letters of encouragement that came with donations.

"They can see that they are not out there alone, that people are supporting them," Mr. Beard said. "I would like to send a big thank-you from the district, administration, staff, students and personally from me. We are overwhelmed and humbled by the generosity that everyone has shown us."

The district will be posting photos and video from the competition Saturday and Sunday to its Facebook page and Twitter account so that supporters can follow along.

"Intimate partner violence is an issue that cuts across all socioeconomic, demographic, and educational backgrounds. It not only affects families, it also affects our schools, workplaces, and communities" - Diane Holder, Executive Vice President, UPMC and President & CEO, UPMC Health Plan.

The event was attended by over 250 guests and produced an atmosphere inspired by knowledge, action, and change.

National Council of Jewish Women Pittsburgh Section Celebrates 120 Years
On Thursday, May 30, NCJW Pittsburgh Section will kick off their 120th anniversary with an event beginning at 5:30 p.m.at Rodef Shalom Congregation.

Award-winning actress, author, and activist Marlo Thomas is keynoting the commemorative event.

Best known for television’s That Girl, which broke new ground for independent women everywhere, Ms. Thomas is a founding Director of the MS. Foundation for Women and is the national Outreach Director for St. Jude's Children's Hospital. She will speak to “Growing up Laughing” and how her childhood experiences inspired her feminism and activism.

Also of note will be the presentation of the Hannah G. Solomon Award to Judy Greenwald Cohen. Ms. Cohen has been an active member of NCJW Pittsburgh Section since 1988, served as Section president from 2004 through 2006, earned Section’s Ruth and Jerome Lieber Leadership Award in 2008, and has served in numerous NCJW leadership roles.

The Hannah G. Solomon Award is presented by NCJW to an individual who has helped change and expand the role of other women in vital roles of community life and motivated others to fight for change, resulting in progress and enlightenment in the community. This is only the 16th time in the 120-year history of NCJW Pittsburgh Section that the Hannah G. Solomon Award has been awarded.

As part of a national organization of more than 90,000 members, NCJW Pittsburgh Section exemplifies the power of its 1,300 members to affect change through collective action. From the 1894 establishment of the first kindergarten in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and the Columbian Council Settlement School (which today is the Jewish Community Center) to the most recent initiative with the Jewish Women’s Foundation to establish a Center for Women, which will create a gender-specific resource for women to achieve and maintain economic security), NCJW has a rich history of turning ideals into action.

“For 120 years,” says past NCJW Pittsburgh Section president Lynette Lederman, who along with Paula Garret and Susan Foreman Jordan are co-chairing the 120th Annual Meeting, “NCJW Pittsburgh Section has consistently and compassionately touched generations of lives, enriched our community, and built a foundation of hope and strength for women, children, and families from which to chart the course of its next 120 years of service.”

East End Song Studio announces Summer Music Drama Camp for Adults
July 14 - 20, 2013

Dancing with Dragons: Transformation of the Mind through Music, Art, and Dance

East End Song Studio announces the Summer Music Drama Camp for adults, evenings, from Sunday, July 14 to Saturday, July 20, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church, 5401 Centre Avenue, Pittsburgh. The 2013 summer camp for adults, Dancing with Dragons: Transformation of the Mind, will engage workshop participants in the theme of transforming conflict in society and in the mind through Music, Art, and Dance. “When a dragon–metaphorically or hey, even a real one–comes into your life, you have to figure out how to respond. Do you run from it? Try to kill it? Let it burn you with its fire? We want to figure out how to dance with it. This year’s camp offers new flare and flavor with the tribal drumming and dragon dances. We’re taking the personal conflict one encounters in opera down a spiritual path. It might sound weird but let there be dragons”, comments Jett Christensen, founder East End Song Studio and Director of the summer camp.

Workshops include a tribal drum circle, presentations on self-defense, gun education for non-owners, tools for non-violent conflict resolution, a movement class based on the mechanics of Chinese lion dancing, and the crafting of life-size dragon puppets. The dragon puppets will be used in the final “dragon dances” to augment the drama of bel canto (19th century Italian) opera scenes performed by members of the East End Song Studio. Camp admission is open to community activists, drummers, dancers, and crafters of all levels.
