The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is pleased to announce the award-winning, internationally recognized jazz vocalist and recording artist Cyrille Aimee will be the featured performer during the Cultural Trust’s Gala on Saturday, September 6, 2014, performance being held at the O’Reilly Theater located in downtown Pittsburgh’s Cultural District.
Ms. Aimee was born in Fontainebleau, France where she discovered a love of the gypsy’s language and music at an early age and comments, “I was hypnotized by this music which made me want to tap my feet. Swinging music makes me so happy. ” Ms. Aimee studied music at the American School of Modern Music in Paris and SUNY Purchase, New York. “The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is honored that Ms. Aimee will be performing at our annual gala event. Ms. Aimee’s performance will be a highlight of the evening and we look forward to hosting this outstanding and accomplished jazz vocalist as our special guest,” comments J. Kevin McMahon, President and CEO, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
Cyrille Aimee (pronounced Surreal Ahh-me) has proven herself to be an unstoppable, undeniable talent in the modern age of jazz and pop music. Internationally renowned and praised for her unparalleled abilities, Cyrille’s vocal stylings are synonymous with musical genius. Her culturally rich background has supplied her with the driving force of Dominican rhythm and the incredible swing of the French Gypsies. Taking these natural abilities with her across the world, she has received rave reviews and a loyal following in each country she has graced with her voice. Aimee is “one of those singers whom non-singing musicians call a musician,” commented Ben Ratliff from The New York Times.
Calliope Presents Ellis Paul
Thursday, September 25, 2014 | 7:30 PM | THE ROOTS CELLAR - Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, Shadyside
“Despite his success and sense of history, Mr. Paul remains an artist with his eye on the future and an interest in discovering the transformative potential in his music.” – The New York Times
Ellis Paul’s songwriting credentials are unassailable. They are as genuine as the 14 Boston music Awards he has earned, as indelible as the tattoo of Woody Guthrie that adorns his arm, and as authentic as the musical roots he draws upon with every note he plays. Since emerging from the Boston music scene, Ellis Paul’s music has been consistently recognized and celebrated worldwide, his 16 releases and loyal, enthusiastic audiences reinforce this acclaim and have since cemented his place as one of America’s most talented songwriters.
Happily, his music has been shared with a wider audience as well, through commercials, documentaries, TV shows and in the soundtracks of several blockbuster films, among them three by the Farrelly Brothers -- “Hall Pass” (starring Owen Wilson and Alyssa Milano), “Me, Myself, & Irene” (starring Jim Carrey) and “Shallow Hal” (starring Jack Black and Gwyneth Paltrow). Peter Farrelly summed up the sentiments of all those who have come to know and appreciate Paul’s music by referring to him as “a national treasure.”
Not surprisingly, Paul’s consistently been heralded by others as well. One writer noted “that it reminds you how much we need storytellers back in pop music -- storytellers with empathy, fine eyes and an understanding that even though we live in a soulless, indifferent would, out music doesn’t have to reflect our culture." Another reviewer was even more pointed. “Ellis Paul is one of the best singer/songwriters of his generation,” she commented. “And for many of us he is the face of contemporary folk music. Few are as smart, as literate, as poetic as Paul. I cannot think of another artist on the acoustic music scene is better loved by fans, or more respected by his contemporaries.”
Indeed, he is all that, and in a very real sense, even more. He’s an observer, a philosopher, and an astute storyteller who shares with his listeners the life lessons he’s learned, and in turn, life lessons they ought to heed as well. By affirming and defining who he is, Ellis Paul affirms and uncovers the essence of us all.
With 16 CD’s, a concert DVD, and a book of poems and short stories to his credit, Ellis’ songs have been featured on the soundtracks to documentaries, TV shows and big Hollywood films such as The Farrelly Brother’s ‘Hall Pass’, ‘Me, Myself & Irene’, and ‘Shallow Hal’. Ellis is a true American troubadour, performing over 150 tour dates a year, for over 20 years all around the world. He has shared the stage with some of the top names in the music world including: Pete Seeger, John Mayer, Arlo Gutherie, Richie Havens, Dar Williams, Shawn Colvin and multi-platinum band Sugerland, among others.

WOMEN AND GIRLS ACHIEVEMENT
Proposed Bills Could Benefit Women Entrepreneurs
From: NAWBO.org and smallbiztrends.com
Lawmakers in both chambers have proposed bills -- the Women's Small Business Procurement Parity Act and the Women's Small Business Ownership Act of 2014 -- designed to help women entrepreneurs. Taken together, the bills seek to help women win more government contracts, provide money for the Small Business Administration's Women's Business Centers and make it easier for women to get loans. Small Business Trends (8/11), The Hill/Floor Action blog (8/12)
A History of the Issues While women own a whopping 10.6 million businesses in the US, they still find it harder to secure business loans than men do. Out of every $23 lent to small businesses, only $1 goes to a woman-owned business, according to a reportissued(PDF) by the committee. Women entrepreneurs are seeing this challenge at every level of financing and investment, from micro loans and venture capital to conventional loans.
Women also historically haven’t had equal access to government contract opportunities. Twenty years ago, Congress set a government-wide goal of awarding 5% of government contracts to women-owned businesses. But guess what? That goal has never been achieved. And so women keep missing out on $4 billion in federal contracts each year.
Another project the U.S. government has left fall by the wayside is the growth of the Small Business Administration’s Women’s Business Centers (WBC), designed to provide women with training and additional resources. Without funding, these centers have stagnated and haven’t fulfilled their potential in serving women nationwide. All of these factors have been deterrents to more women jumping into business ownership. And all are points the proposed “Women’s Small Business Ownership Act of 2014” would address.
What The Bill Will Do If passed, here are some of the specific issues the bill is designed to address.
Improve Lending Opportunities for Women Owned Businesses
The Act would expand and improve the SBA’s microloan and intermediary lending program to reach women who need $50,000 or less for their businesses. It would also enable women who need more — up to $200,000 — to get better access to these loans. Microlenders would have a higher lending cap of $7 million, which would allow them to approve more loans to women.
Boost the Women-Owned Small Business Federal Contract Program
This would put women-owned businesses on equal ground with other disadvantaged groups when bidding on federal contracts and move Congress closer to its 5% goal.
Increase Funding for the Women’s Business Center Program
The Act would expand services and provide more counseling and training to female business owners, especially those in lower-income regions of the country.
Gather Data on Women-Owned Businesses
To date, there’s never been substantial research on female-run businesses. This Act would set a 2015 deadline for the SBA to determine industries where women are under-represented.

Pittsburgh to Host the Monument Quilt to Publicly Support Survivors of Rape and Abuse
The Monument Quilt is on display in Point State Park on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 from 4 - 8pm. Stories from survivors of sexual violence are stitched together on 200 bright, red quilt squares. The quilt is on a 12 city tour of the United States as part of a project to create a public healing space for survivors of rape and abuse.
The Monument Quilt is in Pittsburgh in partnership with a diverse group of local organizations and institutions. Among these are Carnegie Mellon University Student Life Office, Hollaback! Pittsburgh, National Sexual Assault Conference, National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), New Voices Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape (PCAR), Pittsburgh Action Against Rape, Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force, Stop Sexual Assault in the Military, United Steelworkers Women of Steel, Wheeling Vet Center, and YWCA Greater Pittsburgh. The YWCA Greater Pittsburgh works to eliminate racism and empower women throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania. Through its Center for Race & Gender Equity, the YW supports anti-violence policies and programs that protect survivors, hold perpetrators accountable and work to eradicate sexual assault and domestic violence, human trafficking, and dating violence.
“Nationally and locally, the YWCA has a long history of advocating for the health and safety of women and girls,” said YWCA Greater Pittsburgh CEO Magdeline Jensen. “We support the Monument Quilt’s work to build a new culture where sexual assault survivors are publicly supported rather than publicly shamed.” Sexual violence in the United States is nothing short of an epidemic. 1 in 3 women, 1 in 3 transgender people and 1 in 6 men will be raped or abused in their lifetime. Women are twice as likely to experience rape as they are breast cancer. At the display, attendees will witness survivors’ stories, demonstrate public support, and transform their local response to rape.
“This summer’s tour will create a national conversation about supporting survivors of rape and abuse,” says Rebecca Nagle, co-director of Force, the group behind the quilt project. “We are honored that through local organizations and activists, Pittsburgh is not only part of this national conversation, but also is leading it. Together we will create a culture where survivors are publicly supported rather than publicly shamed.” The 100 x 100 foot quilt on display this summer is only the beginning. Over the next two years, more and more stories will be added to The Monument Quilt. In a final display, The Monument Quilt will blanket over one mile of the National Mall with thousands of quilt squares to spell “NOT ALONE.”
There are many ways to get involved with the Monument Quilt. Survivors and allies who wish to add a square to the in-progress quilt can make one following these instructions. Squares brought on August 20 will be added to the display. People across the country are invited to host quilt-making workshops in their school, community center, place of worship, or town. You can also volunteer time or donate money to help make this vision a reality. All the different ways to engage, resources for survivors, information about upcoming events, and more can be found at themonumentquilt.org. If you are interested in volunteering at a quilt display, email upsettingrapeculture@gmail.com.

HIGH SCHOOL and UNIVERSITY NEWS
10 Signs Pittsburghers Are Not Ready to Go Back to School
From: newscastic.com
Summer is almost over and school is almost here. Have you completed your Summer Bucket List? If you haven't finished the items on this list, you're probably not ready to go back to school.
1. Yinz Ain’t Been Aht to Kennywood Yet
If you haven’t yet tasted Potato Patch Fries or taken a ride on a wooden roller coaster, then your summer is probably feeling pretty incomplete. A trip to Kennywood is a rite of summer. It’s going to be tough to get motivated for Fall classes without having packed the cooler, gathered up some good friends, picked up your Pepsi can discounts and headed to Kennywood Park.
2. Steelers Don’t Humiliate The Browns Until 9/7
Can any other fall activity begin in Pittsburgh before The Steelers season starts? We set our clocks by the Sunday game times. We plan our class and work schedules around Thursday night football. First game is September 7th, so let’s be serious…nobody is really starting class until after The Steelers welcome Johnny Football to the NFL on that day.
3. Haven’t Seen the Sun Set on Lake Erie
Sara’s Campground in Erie or Waldameer Park on the lake. Perhaps a bike ride through Presque Isle. Definitely a late summer observation of one of the world’s most beautiful sunsets. A trip to Lake Erie is a way to refresh before getting back to hard work and study. If you haven’t already, take a day trip and cleanse the soul before school starts.
4. You Haven’t Seen a Sunrise Since June
Ever Since the Luke Bryan concert in June, you’ve been out late and hung over all day! Now, you have an 8 AM class on your fall schedule. Better use the rest of the month getting used to going to bed early and rising with the sun.
5. Your Summer Reading List is Still Just a List
Remember all those Great Expectations from spring? You were going to catch up on some novels. The plan was to read ahead and be better prepared for class. Guess what? School is just a few weeks away. Might as well delete those Kindle purchases and make room for text books.
6. Studying Fantasy Football Stats is More Important Than Biology
Let’s face it. The first three or four weeks of fantasy football are the most critical. Whoever adds the best free agents probably has the best chance of advancing through the fantasy football playoffs. There’s simply no time to study biology because it is imperative to review stats, read columns, create spreadsheets and determine the best add/drops. At the end of the day what is really more important…fantasy football bragging rights or understanding the nature of life?
7. Parents – Your Kid Has 14 Book Bags, But You Still Have to Buy a New One
The closet has no room for shoes or clothes because it is full of shoulder bags and book bags. Still, what’s the first thing your kid says in August? “Daddy, I need to get a new book bag for school.” Oh well. That’s the part of going back to school that gets them excited. So, get those cuties to Walmart and pick up a new tote!
8. Parents Two – There’s a Reason Your Kid Batted .200 This Summer
Ignored all of those end of the year letters from the school nurse about eye exams and immunization shots, huh? Now you’re scrambling the get appointments aren’t you? Meanwhile, didn’t you wonder why your kid was the worst hitter on his little league baseball team all summer? He can’t see! Now, you’ll have to request a seat in the front of the class so he can see the board.
9. The Pirates are Still (Somehow) Above .500
Pirates’ fans waited 20 years for a winning season. Now, we are in a pennant race for the second summer in a row! It’s difficult to concentrate on anything while a pennant race is ongoing. Be honest…you didn’t even really think about Steelers football last year until the Cards beat The Pirates, did ya? How can you really concentrate on starting school while the Bucs are still Battling?
10. Let’s Be Real – School Just Sucks
My daughter loves school and can’t wait to start back! I think something might be wrong with her. School is work; and, most of us hate work. Here's to wishing that summer in Pittsburgh could last a little while longer.

YWCA Greater Pittsburgh Ranks Second - Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community Helps Pittsburgh Nonprofits Raise $500,000
From our Friends at: The Soul Pitt | August 7, 2014
YWCA Greater Pittsburgh raised $24,324 in its first year as a Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community participant. The YW’s efforts ranked as the second top fundraising nonprofit for the Pittsburgh Walk and fifth in all of Pennsylvania. Over 160 staff and board members, as well as friends and family, formed the YWCA Greater Pittsburgh team to raise money for the YW’s programs and services.
YWCA Greater Pittsburgh CEO Magdeline Jensen said, “I am so pleased with the impressive accomplishments of our staff, board and volunteers during our first year participating in the walk. They all rose to the occasion and demonstrated support for the organization they care about.”
The Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community in Pittsburgh provided an opportunity for the community to support 69 local nonprofits on May 17th, 2014. The primary goal of the walk, which includes both a 5K route and a one-mile fun walk option, is to help charitable health and human service organizations raise money for their individual missions. Highmark underwrites all of the costs associated with the walks, so 100 percent of funds raised by community members are donated to the charity they select. The Pittsburgh walk raised approximately $501,700 through the participation of 8,500 walkers.

Yanni Brings Agape, "Love" to Benedum
From: Roving Pittsburgher Report

Yanni |
Yanni GRACED the Benedum Stage last night with his mesmerizing smile and consummate rapport with the audience who were raucous and appreciative and never faltered in their unity with the performance. The audience was captivated as Yanni took the stage and seemed to say, "Excuse me while I make love to my piano and you can watch and listen as I am accompanied by my 'United Nations' of musicians."
For those few who do not know who Yanni is. He is a Greek pianist, keyboardist, composer and music producer who has spent most of his adult life in the United States while managing to still travel the world and appear in such historic places as the Acropolis, the Taj Mahal, China's Forbidden City, Russia's Kremlin, Puerto Ricco's El Morro Castle and last night, the world famous Benedum in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Yanni continues to use the musical shorthand that he developed as a child blending jazz, classical, soft rock, and world music to create predominantly instrumental works. As this genre of music was not well suited for commercial pop radio and music television, Yanni achieved international recognition by producing concerts at historic monuments and by producing videos that were broadcast on public television. That was my first experience with Yanni on PBS, "Yanni, Live at the Acropolis," which by the way yielded the second best-selling music video of all time.

Soccer Shots Goals and Coaching Philosophies
As Soccer Shots instructors, we have been given the unique opportunity to coach and invest in the lives of children. For many of these children, it will be their first time playing an organized sport -- and we treat this opportunity with great honor. In order to accomplish our objective to provide a great experience in a child's week, we commit the following goals and coaching philosophies:
- To seek 100% participation
- To approach every session with two objectives: FUN for every child and LEARNING new skills and concepts. These two objectives work together, and our mission is not fulfilled if both objectives are not met.
- To make the experience POSITIVE for every child enrolled. Small accomplishments for some can be HUGE. We take a "You can do it!" approach to everything we teach. Constant encouragement is essential to this philosophy.
- To influence children in areas of healthy living habits -- we talk about exercising daily, taking care of our bodies (warm-up and stretch), and enjoying activity, even if it's not soccer.
- To influence children in areas of strong character: Traits such as respect, honesty, positive attitude, and encouragement are just a few examples of character traits we hope to pass on to the children we work with.
