Nathanial H. Duck
Christian Certified Physical Fitness Instructor, Dstar Productions
Mr. Duck was born and raised in the Homewood area of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Some years ago Mr. Duck was well known for his outstanding abilities in playing basketball, but would now prefer being recognized for his Health and Fitness Ministry. I quote Mr. Duck as saying, “This is my ministry. The lord gave me a vision as a young man that, I would have a family, be involved in community leadership and play a role in neighborhood outreach ministries at church.”

In pursuit of these goals, Mr. Duck received an Associates Degree in LCCC Junior College for Physical Education and Communications. He then started his Health and Fitness ministry as a Youth Fitness Program Director in 1977.

Mr. Duck’s career evolved through time and diligence. He is presently an Expert Personal Trainer at Fitness 19, an Athletic Director for Hosanna House, a Physical Education Fitness Coach for Healthy Black Families Project and a Fitness Instructor for Silver Sneakers. He also volunteers his time in shelters several days a week in the Allegheny area of Pittsburgh. Though he possess a very rigorous schedule, he still finds time to be a committed husband and father to his children of four.

I quote Mr. Duck as saying, “there is no secret to good health; there is a process.”

Start with the following fundamentals:
  • Physical Fitness 3 or 4 days per week, which involves stretching, aerobics and body toning.
  • Hydrate your body with water and alter your eating habits by incorporating nutritional fundamentals.
  • Get plenty of rest, to regenerate your body.
There is no age limit, some health conditions, may exclude physical exertion.

In conclusion, Mr. Duck is an inspiration to both, young and old, male and female alike. His wealth of knowledge and experience, combined with his words of encouragement, wisdom and love for God, has proven him to be a positive role model for the African American community and to anyone who comes in contact with him. Mr. Duck is committed to helping others to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is conveyed through his training.

Talking Points:
  • Professional Personal Fitness Trainer- Since 1991 my involvement and impact to the fitness field started with my son and 3 daughters. Developing them as young athletes allowed me to reflect on my own athletic history. Directing them through their athletic growth from grade school to college introduced me to several different training opportunities. Along the way, I have been certified to
    Nathaniel at Golden Warriors
provide physical education direction for children from age 3 to seniors age 103.
  • Golden Warriors Chair Aerobics Program - In 2000 the program was created to help circulate, stimulate, and mentally challenge clients who have restrictions such as wheelchair, walker, and cane dependency. With my instruction, our clients experience physical exertion on the lowest level, rhythmic calisthenics, stretching with strong emphasis on developing better range of motion. The exercise session is 60 minutes long, broken down into 15 minute segments to include warm up, rhythmic calisthenics, rehydration break, mental stimulation tests (muscle enlightenment), nutritional development, cool down. This program has been well received in the retirement community.
  • Fitness Explosion Exercise Sessions - The history of this program dates back to 1995, and was created for Grandmothers & Granddaughters, Uncles & Nephews, Mothers & Daughters, Fathers and sons to bridge the gap between the generations using fitness as our vehicle. Currently running 3 times a week, Monday, Wednesday, & Friday, this program is an hour long for neighborhood family interaction. Churches and recreation centers have had great success with this physical education development program. Stretching, hand weights, tubal exercise bands with handles, rhythmic calisthenics, and aerobics are all components of this particular athletic fitness program.
  • Heatwave Fitness Program - Developed in 2005, this exercise program has been designed to fight childhood obesity. The curriculum is a group training coed project ages 3 to 7 and 8 to 13. Music is used as our vehicle to attract and keep the youth engaged in these sessions. The primary purpose of this project is to educate and interact with the family unit by providing direction and activities related to weight loss and better nutrition. Daycares, after school programs, summer vacation bible schools are having increased enrollment because of this physical education project.
  • Dstar Productions - Founded in 1991, the original concept of Dstar Productions was for my 4 children to develop the reality of the balance between hard work and the value of a dollar, Athletic clinics were used as our vehicle, such as basketball, track & field, flag football to name a few. My children were my staff, as a father, I wanted them to earn money to buy what they wanted and to appreciate what they have. In the name Dstar Productions are the initials of my 4 children's names, Dominique, my youngest, Sophia, my oldest, Tamika, the Mother of my two wonderful grandchildren, and Robert my son. The A is because they were achievers throughout their scholastic years. And none of this would have been achievable without the nurturing of their mother Collette.
Entrepreneur Tip:
Stay committed to yourself and your product/service, believe in what first directed you to this path. Allow your spirituality to guide you towards your goals and aspirations.

Consumer Tip:
Please understand that there's a balance between exercise and nutritional development.  In order to raise your physical fitness level, you must develop both.

Valerie Price
Founder, Inventor, CEO and President, Blazer's Blankets
Valerie L. Davis, was raised in Stowe Township, Pennsylvania. She is known throughout her community for her multiple talents and love spread on the streets for youth of all age groups. She has become a role model and has mentored young women, young men, teens and children with her sense of fashion and style and brought her creativity to them to encourage, uplift and build their esteem, to teach them how to dress in a modest manner. She has even purchased clothing and accessories for those in need. Not only does she have a gift in the area of fashion for all ages, but she also spreads her fashion towards the breastfeeding mother.

Her new sense of style for the breastfeeding mother began in 1999 when her nephew was born.   He, of course, was a breastfed baby. Seeing the struggles she had to endure to find the intimacy desired for me and my baby during feedings, Valerie, my sister, wanted to come up with something to encourage mothers to have a desire to breastfeed and not give up on the embarrassing moments that could happen in public while attempting to breastfeed a baby! Finally, an answer all mothers have been waiting for, a breastfeeding blanket designed to give us peace!

Valerie’s idea was presented to her family in a meeting held in her home. She created a Board of Directors for her soon-to-be exploding company which she called “Balzer’s Blankets.” Another nephew could not pronounce her name “Valerie” so he called her “Balzer.” Therefore, her company acquired the name from this unforgettable moment of her bond with a nephew. With the multiple talents in our family, and God the center of our lives, we believed all things are possible with God on our side! We knew some day it would be a success Valerie started gathering materials and sowing her blankets. One special blanket was sold to a church member whose son was nicknamed “Bonky.” He embraced the blanket long after breastfeeding and the idea for the name of the blanket was discovered! “Balzer’s Blankets” made “My Bonky.” Her company name and her blanket were named and created from her bond with those children.

In 2008, “My Bonky” received a patent. Our family-owned business and dream was closer than ever. As a sister and executive writer on the Board of Directors for “Balzer’s Blanket,” I am honored to share Valerie’s story with you. Not only is she talented in the fashion sense, from 1998-2003, she demonstrated her athletic ability as a coach for the Sto-Rox Girls’ Basketball team. She has also served in the church in the area of Ministry of Helps. She loves working with children and is an inspiration to her own nieces and nephews.

Talking Points:
  • My Bonky Breastfeeing Blanket provides privacy, security and comfort for the breastfeeding mother and infant.
  • My bonky presents a durable dual patent pending garment to fill a niche by providing a useful made in America breastfeeding blanket. This antimicrobial breastfeeding blanket will provides privacy, security and comfort during the breastfeeding process to the mother and infant. The blankets unique, original design is aimed at insuring personal intimacy while eliminating any obstacles during the breastfeeding process. My bonky can also be used as a burping cloth, it's large enough to use as a protective layer between infant and any surface and to wrap the baby in for warmth.
  • The blankets are made out of quality durable antimicrobial material which will last far beyond the tender years. This useful dual blanket is machine washable and can be easily stored in the bonky carry along bag and/or rolled and tied for travel. Moreover, the blankets come in a variety of light weight/quilted cloths and colors that will help stimulate the infants sight; which makes the bonky the perfect companion for breastfeeding mother’s year round.
  • I accepted a request from my sister in law asking to come up with something to enable her to perform all the task of nursing while in public/work. I came up with the MULTI functional, hands free My Bonky nursing blanket/Daddy Bag. I never though of it as a business. I made them and gave them out to people who requested them in churches and to friends for shower gifts. Someone suggested to me to sell them and start my own business. I got it patented and I received alot of assistance from local small business centers in Pgh. My nephew couldn't say my name when he was little so he called me Balzer. Hence the name "Balzer's Blanket". We are a growing company that has the concern of supporting the natural method of infant feeding and encouraging infants first immunization to be from a natural source. We will continue to create efficient tools for aiding with the healthy growth of children.
  • I first started this as a helpful niche and then got into the significant health need, benefits to mom and baby and the financial side of nursing. I started to promote nursing/benefits to help make it easier for moms with Mid Wives Center for Birth and Health, LeLeche League, Brenda Upsher's Family Daycare. We also give back to the Strong Start program for under privileged moms with The Midwives Center. I noticed that moms need items that serve more than one purpose so its not a use it for a week or two and give it away/throw it away.

Sunita Pandit
Medical Practice Manager, Dr. Santosh Pandit, MD - Cardiology Specialist
Talkcast Host, Mrs. Cardiology
Sunita is the wife of Dr. Santosh Pandit and is responsible for running his cardiology office. As the wife of a cardiologist, she has become passionate about combating the “perils of the heart.” Constantly in pursuit of preventive care, she is dedicated to recording her husbands observations on what keeps a heart healthy.

As practice manager, Sunita is tasked with maintaining a practice that gravitates toward preventive care, employing a combination of alternative and traditional health practices. She is also establishing a concierge cardiology arm of the practice, including second opinion consultation both national and international.

With Sunita's help Dr. Pandit has collected a comprehensive qualified list of alopathic and other health care providers. Dr Pandit's practice espouses the holistic approach to cardiac health with full input from the patient.

Sunita started Mrs. Cardiology as a Publisher and Fireside Cardiology Chat Consultant to share her personal insight as a medical practice manager, caregiver, and physicians wife.  Most doctors including specialists like
Dr. Santosh and Sunita Pandit
cardiologists have only a prescribed amount of time with a patient. Most patients don't know until after they leave the office that they have "just one more question." A great deal of cardiac care especially prevention can be done through education which a doctor has little time for with the current billing directives that ensnare them. Mrs. Cardiology.com is designed to "stand in the gap." Sunita, Mrs. Cardiology, asks questions, takes notes and follows her husband around with a tape recorder and video camera if necessary in order to disseminate his wisdom to both Dr. Pandit's patients and others. She is truly concerned with "matters of the heart," a major concern as the heart quite simply runs that wondrous machine, the human body.

Sunita is also an expert in caring for a severely handicapped child, adolescent and adult. Her son Sachin was born with severe cerebral palsy and mental retardation. She has designed a home that allows her family to live a normal lifestyle while giving excellent care to her severely handicapped adult son.

As a Publisher, Author, Blogger, Consultant to Caregivers for Individuals with Handicaps, Sunita shares her experiences through Fuzzy Living Inc to people from U.S.A. to India.  As a veteran caregiver of a 32 year old severely handicapped adult son, Sunita has designed a home, caregiver showers, beds and efficient space for a wheel chair bound live at home patient with complete care needs. She disseminates this information for those who prefer to keep their dependents at home and care for them there.  Information includes:
  • In home space design
  • Bed design for easy care

  • Demonstration, education and distribution of age defying products that remedy challenges with gene clusters inside the skin, not just on the surface of the skin.
  • Scan testing for antioxidant levels in an individuals system with recommendations for antioxidant and supplement balance.
  • Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant. If you have ever enjoyed the gift of a rose, a walk by a field of lavender, or the smell of fresh cut mint, you have experienced the aromatic qualities of essential oils. In addition to giving plants their distinctive smells, essential oils provide plants with protection against predators and disease and play a role in plant pollination.
  • Essential oils are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile aromatic compounds. Although they are fat soluble, they do not include fatty lipids or acids found in vegetable and animal oils. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in color from crystal clear to deep blue.

Information and tips not tricks on heart health gleaned from Mrs. Cardiology's Fireside Chats with her cardiologist husband, Dr. Santosh Pandit......After 30 years of wedded arranged marriage bliss to Dr. Santosh Pandit, my "fireside conversations" with him has convinced me that there is much more to cardiology care than any doctor can possibly cover in the average fifteen minute consultation...... The personal experience of having taken care of my father with Congestive Heart Failure more than 10 years ago left me helpless in understanding and knowing how to help him. Today I know more that I certainly wish I knew back then...... So I embark on my personal adventure to address that somewhat overwhelming world of cardiac education and I like presenting in plain English!...... Behind every Doctor's white coat facade churns a world of untapped education that the layperson or would be patient needs to hear in pure unadulterated everyday language....... That's my mission to let you know of the insights that I have garnered and the mysteries that I can uncover for you about the "perils of the heart."

Custom molded shoes, sandals and orthotics made on-site. Birkenstock, Alegria and New Balance specialists. Full-service repair center. Accredited Pedorthic foot care center. 3rd Generation Board-Certified Pedorthists.

Talking Points:
  • Marc started getting involved with my family business in 1995 after years of being unfulfilled working in Advertising.
  • He found he had a love for great profession of Pedorthics which is the design, manufacture, fit, and modification of shoes and orthotics as prescribed for relief of painful or disabling conditions of the foot.
  • Over 26 million people have diabetes and many don’t know that they are eligible for shoes, inserts or orthotics once a year through their Insurance.
  • In today’s throw away society many people think that once their shoes are old they should just throw them away. When in reality many shoes can be repaired and extend the life of your favorite friends.
  • Decades ago doctors made house calls. Today many people need professionals to come to their homes for shoes, orthotics and foot care needs. Many people don’t know that this service still exists.
Consumer Tip:
Like Cinderella said one shoe can change your life. The right fitting shoe can make you feel like a million dollars. The wrong shoe feels like you just lost the lottery by being one number away.

Linda Barnicott
Artist, Linda Barnicott Publishing L.L.C.
Linda Barnicott began her career as a portrait artist in 1975. Today she is beloved and sought-after for her enchanting portraits of Pittsburgh. Using rich pastel colors, she captures the unique beauty of famous Pittsburgh places with a charm all her own. It began in 1989 with the now-famous tribute to downtown holiday shopping entitled “Meet Me Under Kaufmann’s Clock.” The work immediately won the hearts of Pittsburghers, who have been meeting friends under the clock downtown for years. From this work Linda created several series of Pittsburgh scenes, capturing warm memories that are loved by generations. In 1995, she began painting a series of Kennywood Park scenes that has become even more popular. Since then, she has brought to life the magic of every amusement park in the region, including Story Book Forest, Idlewild Park, Sand Castle Water Park and West View Park, which closed in 1977. In 2011 she added to her body of work plein air pastel landscapes from her traveling across the country. Her goal is to bring to the beholder a sense of peace and tranquility.

With roots as a portrait artist, Barnicott includes family members and friends in every painting. “If you look carefully, you can watch my daughters grow up over the years, starting with the Kennywood Series,” says Barnicott. “And my husband appears in just about all of them.” Barnicott begins each piece with photographs of the scene. She takes family and friends with her, setting up their posed positions. It was a hot day in the middle of July when they stood in full winter gear beneath Kaufmann’s clock for her reference shots. She makes sketches to use as reference, too. To paint a couple in one of the old aluminum boats on Kennywood Lagoon, she sketched some friends posed on a bench in her yard. The man held a rake and a hoe instead of oars. After a little Barnicott magic, the two now float peacefully on the water in “Coasting Through Kennywood.”

Barnicott was chosen to be the official artist of the 1996 Three Rivers Regatta. And since 1998, she has been commissioned by the American Cancer Society of Greater Pittsburgh to create the painting used on their annual Christmas card. In 2000, Barnicott received a special Proclamation from the City of Pittsburgh, commemorating her “tremendous contribution in capturing and preserving many sites in and around the Pittsburgh Area.” This is an honor she holds dear, as a largely self-taught artist. Barnicott did study, on several occasions, under the tutelage of international portrait artist Daniel Greene of upper state New York and nationally with landscape artist, Richard McKinley. In 2006, Linda's company, Linda Barnicott Publishing, LLC, was chosen as a winner of the prestigious 2006 Forbes® Enterprise Award. Linda has been honored to work with George Nowack at the Oncology Wellness Institute in Meadville, PA. She volunteered her time and talents to help reduce the stress of cancer patients, who are receiving chemotherapy, through creating artwork. Her paintings hung in the gallery there for the patients to enjoy for 3 years. Linda was chosen to be the official artist for the 50th Anniversary of Pittsburgh’s Light-up Night. In 2010, she partnered with Wendell August Forge to create her art in handmade metals. Two of her recent notable commissions were anniversary paintings for Macy’s and La Roche College in 2013.

Each year, Barnicott’s endearing scenes become more popular. Her paintings and collectibles are sold worldwide on the Internet, art shows, and appear in well over 50 regional galleries and gift shops. Barnicott works in a studio at her Monroeville home, where she lives with her husband. She has two grown beautiful daughters. You can visit an online gallery of all of her paintings at www.lindabarnicott.com.

Talking Points:
  • Linda started her career as a Pittsburgh artist in 1989 with a painting entitled ,"Meet Me Under Kaufmann's Clock and in 2013, after painting Kaufmann's several times over my career, I was asked to paint the 100th anniversary painting of Kaufmann's clock.
  • For the last 16 years she has created the holiday card for the American Cancer Society earning them over 3/4 of million dollars for cancer research and prevention. This year I will be painting the County Courthouse as it celebrates its 125th year.
  • This is year 5th year of her partnership with Wendell August Forge in created my artwork in handmade metals. There will be 3 new Pittsburgh and 3 new Kennywood ornaments to add to the collection.
  • In May Linda embarked on a painting trip to California where she painted outdoor scense in and around Yosemite National Park. She plans to continue painting landscapes from her travels. This is her new love to create tranquil, "take me away" pastel paintings.
Positively Pittsburgh Live Special Offer:
Take advantage of this best offer ever! For a limited time only, you can go to www.lindabarnicott.com and put in code# PPLBIZ or call 412-372-3200 and mention this interview and receive 25% off your order, this excludes original pastel paintings. This offer ends midnight Sunday June 7, 2014.

PITTSBURGH CULTURAL TRUST PRESENTS
PORTRAITS OF AIR: PITTSBURGH

A CROWD-SOURCED EXHIBITION

June 6 – July 13, 2014 | 709 Penn Gallery

Pittsburgh, PA—The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust presents the visual art exhibition Portraits of Air: Pittsburgh by Detroit-based artist Susan Goethel Campbell. Crowd-sourced during the 2013 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival, this installation is the culmination of the yearlong project, on view at the Trust’s 709 Penn Gallery from June 6–July 13, 2014. The exhibition, made possible through the generous support of the Heinz Endowments in partnership with the Breathe Project, opens in conjunction with the 2014 Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival.

The installation shows the results of nearly 100 8 × 10 in., framed spun-glass air filters placed throughout the Pittsburgh region in ordinary locations, such as the home or workspace. Incorporating photography, sound and the air filters—some of which have remained completely white while others have visible particulates—Campbell creates a visual document of the invisible element of air and invites people to think about the quality of the air they breathe.

“The main goal of this project is to bring awareness to the concept of air. It moves from the local to the global and is necessary to sustain life,” says artist Susan Goethel Campbell. “My hope is that people will see themselves in this project and not necessarily that air is dirty or polluted. What I am most interested in are the [filters’] placements and how these individual sites helped to create a broad portrait of air.”

Hope Grows Foundation

We know that caregivers are predominately female and spend 20 hours of week caring for a family member or friend?  Did you know that 18% are children?  The statistics for caregivers are staggering.  So many of us take care or have taken care of a loved one.  We can all attest to the emotional stress of it all, but we don’t think of ourselves…it is something you just do when a friend or family member has a disability, become ill or elderly.  That is just the nature of our culture, upbringing and the fact that caregiver support is so expensive that families can’t afford it.

I want to introduce you to the Hope Grows Foundation that is here to provide much needed caregiver
support in the Pittsburgh area.  We’d love to share more with you by joining us at the Hope Grows Victorian Tea special event on June 14, 2014 at Sweetwater Art Center, 200 Broad Street, Sewickley, PA  15143.
If you are a caregiver, this event is for you.  This will be a lovely afternoon to have lunch and share your passion of tea providing a soothing atmosphere to network with other caregivers or just friendly conversation with your family and friends.  We have two wonderful guest speakers that you will enjoy sharing their knowledge on floriography and soothing oils.  They are both specialists in their fields.  And a great raffle for you to purchase tickets to help the Hope Grows Foundation.  This Foundation was started through the amazing vision of Lisa (Werwie) Story, a who is a specialist in caregiver support and horticultural therapy and I’m honored to have been asked to participate on her Board of Directors and help her foundation.  This is also a passion that is near to my heart.

Hershey PA street lights
But before all the work, we have the good fortune to visit Gettysburg and Hershey next week. You know chocolate always tops everything else! Besides, you gotta love a town where even the street lights are Hershey's Kisses.

While Hershey brings out the kid in all of us, Gettysburg reaches deep into the core of every American. Soul searching is part of standing on ground where so many gave their lives - one American fighting another.

Part of the Gettysburg experience is its saturation in American history. We'll spend a night at the Battlefield B&B. I'm looking forward to their awesome breakfast and the morning history presentation. The inn was a Civil War-era farmhouse.

In between all the travel and events, I plan to photograph as much of Pittsburgh as possible. It's a photogenic city with enough culture, diversity and history to thrill the heart of any writer and photographer.

Set your canoe or kayak on one of Pennsylvania’s water trails. These trails are boat routes suitable for canoes, kayaks and small, motorized watercraft. Like conventional trails, water trails are recreational corridors between specific locations. Water trails are comprised of access points, boat launches, day-use sites, and, in some cases, overnight camping areas. From ripples to rapids, paddling these aquatic highways can be a great adventure. And don’t forget about fishing
opportunities. Most of these trails boast of great fisheries and easy access to the water.
